Tiffany Haddish Talks Pay Parity

tiffany haddish equal pay

-For the 2018 Power of Women issue, Variety profiled five women—Emma Gonzalez, Lena Waithe, Tiffany Haddish, Natalie Portman, and Regina King—about how they’re using their power for good.

-This entire Tiffany Haddish interview is excellent but I really like her take on why women should speak to each other more openly about salaries and perks. “I think the reason why, a lot times, we don’t get paid the same as men do is because we don’t talk about it. I think we do need to talk about it because I sure get in there and I’m like, ‘Hey, Kate Hudson. How much do they pay you for that? What kind of perks do you get for that?’ I didn’t know they could fill your room up with whatever kind of food you want. That’s why I done gained so much weight, because she told me about all the food you can get. I’m like, you can bring me some tacos and I want an In-N-Out burger.”

-This weekend, Taylor Swift broke her usual stance about not mentioning politics and endorsed two Democratic candidates in Tennessee — and it looks like it may have made a huge impact. Following her Instagram post, Vote.org experienced their second biggest traffic spike, and in the first 48 hours since her post, the site had 240,ooo new voter registrants. Tennessee has seen 5,183 registrations this month so far, half of which came after her post. To put that into perspective, Tennessee saw only 2,811 registrations in the entire month of September.

-Congrats to Suits star Patrick Adams and Pretty Little Liars star Troian Bellisario, who welcomed a baby girl.

Dakota Johnson is fighting a lot of rumours this week. She and Chris Martin hosted a party that happened to have some pink and blue balloons, and everyone assumed (incorrectly) that it was a gender reveal party. She’s also fighting rumours that she’s in a secret affair with Jamie Dornan. (Anyone with eyeballs just has to watch an interview with those two to dispel that one…)

-Stranger Things David Harbour will officiate a wedding in full Hellboy costume for 666k re-tweets. (I kinda like this game where he does ridiculous things for retweets, though I’m getting a little nervous about how far he’s going to take it.)

-A passage that leaked from Busy Philipps’ forthcoming memoir details an alleged assault by James Franco on the set of Freaks and Geeks. The script called for her character to gently nudge him in the chest. Philipps writes that the scripted gesture caused Franco to get so upset, he allegedly “grabbed both my arms and screamed in my face, ‘DON’T EVER TOUCH ME AGAIN!’ And he threw me to the ground. Flat on my back. Wind knocked out of me.” Her costar Linda Cardellini suggested that Philipps report what happened to her manager.

-The fact that Brie Larson is still in Jacob Trembley’s life makes me happy.

-Also making me happy: how much fun Jason Momoa and Mark Ruffalo appear to be having together.

-Ha ha ha. James Gunn may move to DC to write and direct the next Suicide Squad movie.

-Next year’s MET Gala will be co-chaired by Lady Gaga, Serena Williams and Harry Styles.

-I liked this piece questioning whether Lady Gaga‘s character “sells out” in A Star Is Born. I dug the movie, but it was very weird how it leaned so heavily into a 2004-ish debate about how rock auteurs are so much more authentic than pop stars. I’m kind of surprised Gaga didn’t push back on that.

-Reflecting on her 20s, Gwyneth Paltrow recalls being so naïve and arrogant, her own father once warned her, “You’re acting like a dick.”

Rupert Everett might actually be my spirit animal. In a red carpet interview he said: “I’d like to be dead quite soon. I can’t really deal with the modern world, to be quite honest. I’m very anti-virtual. I do [have an email address] unfortunately. I’m always thinking of stopping it.”

-Apparently there’s always been a lot of sexy subtext in the Venom comics, but the fact that critics are calling the film a “rom-com” and the internet is now shipping Tom Hardy‘s character with the parasite who lives within him actually makes me want to see this thing!

Riz Ahmed and Tom Hardy explained UK slang for us.

Helena Bonham Carter talked about working with Harvey Weinstein: “He knew how to get you Oscar nominations. Both my [Oscar] nominations are due to him… [But] I found the way he treated certain people chilling—without any kind of respect. There were many times I disagreed with the way he behaved, and I don’t mean sexually.”

-The 11th season of Doctor Who, which stars Jodie Whittaker as the first woman to play the title role and got rave reviews, grew from last season’s premiere in ratings, while The Walking Dead suffered a new premiere ratings low. It’s like the universe is righting itself…

-Here’s our first look at Ruby Rose’s Batwoman look in the Arrowverse. It’s a great costume, which is atypical for the CW. But it’s a terrible wig, which is very typical for the CW.

-EgyptAir is shifting blame for that terrible Drew Barrymore interview to an ad agency. Sure.

Kanye West is set to meet with Trump and Jared Kushner at the White House on Thursday to discuss prison reform and reducing the violence in Chicago. Oh, problems solved then!

-Aw man, I clearly have to renew my Amazon Prime membership, because the trailer for Good Omens starring Michael Sheen and David Tennant looks great.

Sarah Jessica Parker, Renée Zellweger and Jacqueline Bisset star in the Here and Now trailer.

Michael B. Jordan Is Ready To Take Over The World

michael-b-jordan-vanity-fair

Michael B. Jordan covers the latest issue of Vanity Fair and talks about how much he has going on right now. His production company (which not only has an inclusion rider pledge but convinced Warner Bros. to adopt that promise across the entire studio)  is already developing scores of television series and films. “I want to create projects for Brad Pitt, but at the same time I want to be able to create a movie for Will Smith, or Denzel, or Lupita, or Tessa. It’s gonna be eclectic. It’s gonna be animation. It’s gonna be non-scripted. It’s gonna be digital. It’s gonna be film, television. It’s gonna be video games.”

-In his calculating new GQ cover story (why is he still getting covers?!?), Johnny Depp plays the victim and says it hurts to be considered a violent man. The whole fawning interview is disgusting and this takedown of it is more worth your time than the story itself.

-Congrats to Kate Hudson and Danny Fujikawa, who welcomed a baby girl. They named her Rani (pronounced Ronnie) after his dad.

Mischa Barton is going to be on the MTV revival of The Hills and so help me god I’m actually interested. Also, The Hills was a spin off of Laguna Beach, which was originally created to be the real-life version of The OC. Time is a flat circle.

-A very pro-Brad Pitt sounding source says that contrary to reports, he and Angelina Jolie have “no truce” in their custody battle.

-I know I said last week that my enjoyment of A Star Is Born is going to depend on how much I can avoid Bradley Cooper‘s insufferable behavior on this press tour — but I just can’t stop!

Steven Spielberg has cast Ansel Elgort as Tony in his musical film adaptation of West Side Story. I don’t hate this. You need to be super earnest in that role and that dude is the earnest-est.

Kanye West took a tour of Detroit’s College for Creative Studies yesterday afternoon, and at one point he jumped on a table to rant about Elon Musk, telling people to “leave that man the f–k alone.”

-Meanwhile, Kanye picked a fight with Kim Kardashian because he didn’t like the colour of the band-aid she gave him, and I actually feel really bad for her. (I don’t know what’s more disturbing: that he seems jealous of the attention she’s giving their kids, or Khloé‘s reaction to her story — “But if that’s going to make him feel more loved, don’t you want to just get the band-aid?”)

-Chelsea Peretti announced she won’t be coming back to Brooklyn Nine-Nine full time. ::sad trombone::

-Oh FFS, now Damon Wayans says *he’s* quitting Lethal Weapon. “It’s hard for me to play this loving, supportive father, husband, friend on TV, and be the guy in life that is telling everyone, ‘I can’t I have to work.'” (For what it’s worth, when the Clayne Crawford drama was going down, Wayan didn’t exactly come off smelling like a rose, with reports about him refusing to participate in table reads and wanting sides that only included his lines and excluded the lines of all other actors.) Fox should have just scraped the whole thing and renewed Pitch.

-Fantastic Beasts director David Yates hit back at reports of straightwashing, promising that the sequel will feature Jude Law‘s Dumbledore having “sensual moments” with Grindelwald.

-This is a bad take by Jimmy Kimmel on Louis C.K.‘s return to the comedy stage: “I think people tend to focus on the one or two people who walk out of a situation like that. Ultimately, the audience decides whether someone is welcomed back.” The audience didn’t decide whether CK got that spot on the stage (they didn’t even know he was going to be there). The comedy club owner gave him that spot. To ignore the obvious gatekeeping is a ridiculous statement. (This thread captures everything wrong with what he said.)

-Venom seems like it’s one of those movies that the fresh or rotten rating fails. It’s only 33% on Rotten Tomatoes, but every review I’ve read makes it sound like a mess that’s also super fun to watch.

Tom Hardy playing with rescue dogs is the best content on the internet today.

-There’s talk that the Timothee Chalamet and Lily-Rose Depp relationship is a PR-based strategy and I refuse to accept this because LOOK HOW ADORABLE THEY ARE!

-This profile on Catherine Hardwicke is a brutal read. The Monday after Twilight opened and she became the highest grossing female director to ever open a movie, she went into the Summit offices to do an online fan chat. “When I went in I saw that there were massive bouquets and balloons and bottles of wine, and crazy gifts sent to them by all the distributors around the world or whoever, all their friends. I had heard these rumors that when a director does something like this they give them a car, they give them a two-picture deal or something like that. They give them an office and ask them what they want to do after this.” Hardwicke pauses. “And then I got a mini cupcake that day.”

-Holy moly, Kristen Bell is on the new episode of Keep It and I’ve never downloaded a podcast quicker. (On a recent episode, Kara put her on her Top Ten White Women list and I really hope they talk about it.)

-I’m still digesting this NYT article questioning whether art should be a battleground for social justice, but it’s worth a read.

-Vulture did a deep dive into Adam Driver‘s oil baron sketch on SNL.

Rihanna, Yasiel Puig, and Christina Milian were all victimized by the same burglars — three teen boys and the mother of one of the suspects — who were arrested last week. So, does that mean a Bling Ring sequel is in the works?

-Variety reports that ABC Studios and producers have kept Criminal Minds director of photography Greg St. Johns in place despite multiple harassment and abuse claims, an HR probe, and an investigation by a California state agency. Several male crew members accused him of groping them and reported it, but saw no steps taken to curb or address the alleged abuse.

-Another CBS exec has been placed on leave after several current and former employees alleged he regularly used sexual and homophobic language in the workplace.

-This apology/statement by Fan Bingbing does nothing to quell my fears about her well-being.

-So Drew Barrymore‘s publicist has denied she granted that bizarre interview that was circulating yesterday, but Egypt Air is still standing by it.

Jodie Whittaker takes over the main role on Doctor Who this weekend. I don’t watch the show but I like her so much and she’s uber charming in this interview.

-The trailer for Vice is finally here, starring Sam Rockwell as George W Bush and Christian Bale as Dick Cheney. Whoa.

The Bachelor in Paradise Mess Gets Messier

bachelor-in-paradise

-A Bachelor in Paradise crew member provided a horrific, detailed account of the alleged sexual misconduct, claiming that the female contestant was so out of it that she went limp and kept sliding under the water. This just keeps getting worse and worse. And of course, the slut shamers are out in full force.

-Meanwhile, the male contestant is reportedly demanding to see the footage as he believes it will exonerate him.

-According to Chris Harrison, no decisions have been made about Bachelor in Paradise’s future, but I can’t imagine them ever coming back after this.

-It sounds like Jennifer Lawrence has nabbed the coveted September cover of Vogue.

-Yes, Slate, Katy Perry’s new album is a hot mess. No, Slate, it is not our fault.

-Also, Katy Perry says Josh Groban is “the one who got away.”

-Last night, Stephen Colbert grilled Oliver Stone on his lenient interview with Putin and things got hella awkward, especially when the audience started openly laughing at his answers.

-Not surprisingly, the rumours that Tom Hardy may be cast as Jafar in the live-action Aladdin did not go over well.

-Glow, Alison Brie‘s Netflix’s comedy about female wrestlers, is getting really good reviews. THR says it’s “worth stepping into the ring for,” EW praises its “heartbreaking glitter-blasted humanity,” and TVLine says it “puts ’80s kitsch in a hilarious headlock.”

-Speaking of Netflix comedies, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt has been renewed for season 4. I’m not through the new season, but I’m loving what I’ve seen so far. (The line “are you marching in a Give Back the Night rally?” made me laugh so hard on a plane recently, I woke up the woman next to me.)

Sandra Oh is returning to TV to star in BBC’s Killing Eve, created by Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge. God, I love all of those words!

Justin Bieber‘s fans were not happy with him when he said he couldn’t sing “Despacito” because he didn’t know the lyrics.

-At the Rough Night premiere, Scarlett Johansson hung out with the 72-year-old woman who went viral after her grandson posted a photo of her when she was younger and she looked just like the actress.

-Meanwhile, Scarlett was once again spotted with SNL’s Colin Jost.

Demi Moore, Leslie Jones, and Demetrius Shipp Jr. played charades with Fallon last night.

-I haven’t really looked at Salma Hayek the same way since that disastrous luncheon earlier this year, but she’s been telling some very funny stories on her latest talk show tour.

-If there’s a prize for “best walking onto a talk show stage,” Kate McKinnon just won it.

-The average Netflix user has streamed almost three full Adam Sandler movies. Humanity is doomed.

-I’m probably supposed to hate this dress on Nicole Kidman, but there’s something about the way she’s been leaning into the witchy fairy look lately that I can’t help but appreciate.

-The trailer for the Whitney Houston doc, which reportedly sheds light on rumored relationship with Robyn Crawford, has arrived.

-This is a great piece on how reviewers treated Gal Gadot when writing about Wonder Woman. Basically, we need more female and POC critics.

-Have you and your friends fought over the NYT’s list of the 25 best films of the 21st century yet? You will.

-I love Roxanne Gay. I love her. She writes some of the most searing, raw fiction out there. And her interview with Trevor Noah made me love her even more. She was heartbreakingly brave when talking about how being gang-raped at 12 led to her weight issues, and how the world treats obese people.

-Why the hell are they remaking Flatliners? And why the hell are Ellen Page and Diego Luna in it? Nina Dobrev, I get, but Page was nominated for an Oscar!
