Canada Celebrates Schitt’s Creek’s Sweep

-Toronto celebrated Schitt’s Creek’s historic Emmy sweep by lighting the CN Tower gold last night, and the cast was loving it.

–Kelly Clarkson opened up about her recent divorce on her talk show’s first day back, saying “Definitely didn’t see anything coming that came, but what I’m dealing with is hard — it involves more than just my heart, it involves a lot of little hearts.”

-When Ellen Degeneres‘ show returned to production this week, she “jokingly” told staff not to look her in the eye. What a funny joke that they must have really appreciated!

–Tiffany Haddish says one of the perks of dating Common is she gets to quarantine at his house. “Yeah, his house is bigger than my house, so that’s nice. He lives in the Hills. It’s nice.”

-Gabrielle Union will lead a table read of a classic Friends episode over Zoom on September 22. If they keep doing these things, the HBO Max reunion will soon become moot … as maybe it should?

-The upcoming season of Supergirl will be its last. Melissa Benoist is pregnant and her husband is no longer on the show, so I wonder if she no longer wants to be stuck in Vancouver for 8 months of the year. I assume some of the actors may end up on the new Superman & Lois show.

-Despite the Daily Mail’s legal defense, Meghan Markle’s lawyers continue to deny she co-operated with the authors of the recently released book Finding Freedom.

–Kate Middleton enjoyed some socially distanced park hangs to support parent-powered support programs.

–Mel Gibson is reportedly making a Passion of the Christ sequel because the bad news just never ends.

-The Billboard Music Awards nominations came out today and Post Malone tops the list with 16 nods.

-Do I have to start watching Jann Arden’s sitcom? Because this clip of her beating up Sarah McLachlan is hilarious.

-This interviewer talking to Judith Butler seemed sympathetic to J.K. Rowling, but Butler was NOT HAVING IT.

–Vanessa Bryant is suing the L.A. County Sheriff and his department, claiming authorities released unauthorized photos of the helicopter crash that killed her husband, Kobe Bryant, and their daughter.

-Is Tenet a flop? It’s complicated but the short answer is yes.

-I’ve been in fandoms. I love fandoms. But sometimes fandoms can be super messy, and it gets even messier when creators/stars try to police them. That said, this is a very good PSA from former RuPaul’s Drag Race contestants about the racism within that fandom.

-Celebrate the first day of fall with the Supernova trailer, which features Colin Firth in a variety of sweaters. He plays a man whose partner of 20 years (Stanley Tucci) is diagnosed with dementia.

Drew Barrymore Hosts a Tearful Charlie’s Angels Reunion

-The first episode of Drew Barrymore‘s talk show was a lot, y’all. After the chaotic first 15 mins, she got more into a groove, especially when interviewing Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu. You could tell that these three are legitimately tight.

-So Chris Evans livened up our weekend by accidentally posting a photo of his camera roll on Instagram, which included a dick pic. It’s kind of wonderful that Twitter as a whole collectively seems reluctant to share the image but I wish the same kindness was extended to female celebs when this happens (especially since theirs are usually the result of malicious hacks, not their own inadvertent posting).

-At least Mark Ruffalo and Chris’ brother Scott are already teasing him about it.

–Dave Grohl and his daughters wrote a theme song for the little British girl who previously beat him in a drum challenge. She just posted her reaction video and it’s wonderful.

-It’s wild to me that Sarah Jessica Parker played Carrie Bradshaw for so long and yet seems to have no understanding of that character.

-The Mandalorian’s Gina Carano keeps digging a hole. First she mocked BLM and wearing masks, and now she’s making fun of trans people.

-Oof, the embargo for Netflix’s Ratched is up and critics seem to be either lukewarm on it or are hating it.

-The Fast Times live table read with Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt, which was supposed to be last month, has been rescheduled for Thursday night.

-Speaking of live reads, last night’s Princess Bride reunion was a delight.

-Lifetime’s first holiday movie with a lead LGBTQ storyline is set to star real-life spouses Ben Lewis and Blake Lee. Lewis was one of the best things about the final shaky season of Arrow.

-The Fall TV schedule looks so sparse this year, but HBO is premiering two new shows tonight: We Are Who We Are, Call Me By Your Name’s Luca Guadagnino‘s new show about teens in Italy on a U.S. military base, and The Third Day, a 6-episode series starring Jude Law and Naomie Harris.

–Cassie Randolph filed a restraining order against former Bachelor Colton Underwood, citing “domestic violence prevention” in her request.

-Model Bar Refaeli has been sentenced in Israel to nine months of community service after being found guilty of evading almost $10 million in taxes.

–JK Rowling continues to be a garbage person. Her new book features a trans serial killer.

-The Parks and Rec cast is set to reunite for a virtual town hall to benefit the Democratic Party of Wisconsin.

-If you were online at all this weekend you probably say the hilarious “Meatier? Meteor?” TikTok. She posted a followup!

–Jonathan Majors, who’s riding high this year with Lovecraft and Da 5 Bloods, is rumoured to be playing the villain in the next Ant-Man movie.

-Speaking of Lovecraft, this is a great profile on Michael Kenneth Williams.

–Chloé Zhao won the Golden Lion at this year’s Venice Film Festival for Nomadland. I watched it this weekend at TIFF and adored it.

-Tenet only earned $6.7 million in the domestic box office this weekend, despite there being basically no competition and it playing on 100 more screens. This brings its total haul to under $15 million, proving that for now at least, there is simply no market in the US. Expect studios to push their remaining big releases to next year.

-Meanwhile, Warner Bros. won’t share Tenet box office data through Comscore, angering rival studios.

-Also, Mulan fared poorly at the China box office with a disheartening $23.2 million debut.

-Between Wonder Woman being pushed again, Tenet and Mulan underperforming, and the stupid Cuties Netflix controversy, it’s no wonder The Ankler called last week “the week that movies died.”

-At least Netflix is still thriving. They just bought the quarantine-shot movie from the creator of Euphoria starring Zendaya and John David Washington for $30 million.

-Here’s the first trailer for The Father, starring Olivia Colman and Anthony Hopkins. I have a screening for it tomorrow night and I’m pretty sure it’s gonna destroy me.

 

Gabrielle Union Talks in PTSD Women’s Health

–Gabrielle Union says of her new Women’s Health cover: “My 1st cover shot by a Black woman @djenebaaduayom and the 1st time I’ve worn my own natural hair for a cover.” In the story, she says: “The combination of the pandemic and this racial reckoning, alongside being inundated with [images of] the brutalization of Black bodies, has sent my PTSD into overdrive. There’s just terror in my body.”

-Even the Caped Crusader can’t escape the pandemic. Robert Pattinson has tested positive for the coronavirus, shutting down production of The Batman in London. What’s makes this even more brutal is the reason they first shut down production back in March is because a crew member died of complications from covid.

–Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson also revealed that his entire family is recuperating from “relentless” covid. He says his children only had sore throats but he and his wife “had a rough go.” Pattinson is likely in the best shape of his life with all the Batman training and The Rock is, well, The Rock and they still got it.

-This week, Britney Spears‘ lawyer filed documents indicating that her conservatorship is “voluntary” but reinforcing her desire to strip her father of control. He wrote: “This is a voluntary conservatorship. Conservatee wishes to exercise her right to nominate a conservator of the estate…Britney is strongly opposed to her father continuing as sole conservator of her estate. Rather, without in any way waiving her right to seek termination of this conservatorship in the future, she strongly prefers to have a qualified corporate fiduciary appointed to serve in this role.”

–Miley Cyrus says she had to deal with sexist remarks from a VMAs producer when she asked for the beauty lights to be turned off for her performance.  “The beauty light is always used on women and I said turn the f——g lights off. You would never tell Travis Scott or Adam Levine that he couldn’t turn the beauty light off.” But then when her bracelet kept getting caught in wires she was told “You want to be treated like a guy? We wouldn’t be dealing with this if a guy was doing it.”

–Meghan Markle is suing the paparazzi over photos taken on a walk with Baby Archie and her dog on Vancouver Island.

-May John Waters live forever.

–E. Alex Jung profiles are always spectacular, even when they’re featuring someone as divisive as Miranda July.  I mean, any article that details an evening in which July, Margaret Qualley, and Taylor Swift commiserate about Pete Davidson is worth your time.

–July certainly had strong praise for the article.

-Speaking of excellent profiles, this one on Jesse Plemons makes you realize how steadily he’s been working in critically acclaimed projects since Friday Night Lights (he’s appeared in 4 Best Picture nominees over the last 5 years and leads Charlie Kaufman’s latest).

-I thought this was an interesting take on how Tenet might need movie theaters more than movie theaters need Tenet: “It holds your interest through entropy alone, and it’s easy to imagine how the slightest distraction might cause the whole thing to sputter apart…Which, sadly, isn’t to suggest that ‘you have to see Tenet on the big screen’ so much as it is to say that the film might not work at all on a small one.”

-The first reviews for Mulan are in and they are very positive, though many critics are noting that its grandeur would work better on the big screen than on its Disney+ release.

-Meanwhile, this is a great thread of Asian writers who’ve reviewed Mulan.

–Tilda Swinton was honored at the opening night of the Venice Film Festival and paid tribute to her Marvel costar Chadwick Boseman.

-Also, Cate Blanchett’s cape on the Venice red carpet was everything.

–Lili Reinhart says she feels like a prisoner in Canada, where she’s filming Riverdale. We’ll gladly send her back.

–Ethan Hawke wrote a book review for the New York Times, and it’s made him even more crush-worthy.

-Disney+ just announced that The Mandalorian’s second season premieres on October 30th.

-I’m glad I bought tickets to Nomadland at TIFF before I read this story about Frances McDormand pooping in a bucket during filming.

-The trailer for Netflix’s Grand Army looks great, but when it dropped yesterday a writer from the show tweeted: “Me and the 3 writers of color who worked on the show quit due to racist exploitation and abuse. The show runner and creator went full Karen and called Netflix hr on the Black writer in the room for getting a haircut. Yes you read that correctly. Who wants to interview us?”

-I can’t imagine being in the theatre again by November, but the new No Time To Die trailer is gorgeous.
