Nicole Kidman’s Reinvention as a TV Star

Nicole Kidman sits on the grass in a red dress on the cover of Harper's Bazaar

Nicole Kidman graces the new issue of Harper’s Bazaar (though I wish they’d chosen one of the other photos for the cover instead). She talks filming Nine Perfect Strangers during the pandemic (“We just really bonded and that’s unusual for this day and age. Because a lot of times people are coming in and leaving and you don’t get that camaraderie and friendship”) and recovering from the harsh spotlight of her marriage to Tom Cruise (“I’m wary at times, and I’ve been hurt, but at the same time I much prefer a warm approach rather than a prickly shut-down approach. My husband, Keith, says that when he met me, he said, ‘How’s your heart?’ And I apparently responded, ‘Open'”).

-The Emmy Awards were last night and though there weren’t many upsets, most of the winners were solid choices. Fashion-wise, my favourite looks were from Anya Taylor-Joy, Yara Shahidi, Beanie Feldstein, Angela Bassett and Nicole Byer. I didn’t love Kathyrn Hahn, Juno Temple or Emma Corrin (but at least Corrin gave everyone something to talk about).

Seth Rogen was the first presenter and kicked off the show with a bit about the seemingly lax covid protocols. “Let me start by saying there’s way too many of us in this little room. What are we doing? They said this was outdoors – it’s not! They lied to us…I would not have come to this.”

Taika Waititi and Rita Ora were way too extra.

Michaela Coel‘s speech may have destroyed me.

-Do I have to start watching Reservation Dogs? The cast got the biggest cheers when they presented last night, and critics (who always liked the show) seem to be raving about the final three episodes of the season.

Adele made her relationship with Rich Paul Instagram official among a slideshow about her wearing a dress that’s very reminiscent of 90210’s prom episode.

Gisele Bündchen is defending Dutch model Doutzen Kroes, who is facing backlash for posting an anti-vax comment on Instagram.

-After he was caught on tape saying the n-word, country music star Morgan Wallen pledged $500K to Black-led charities. Rolling Stone reached out to 57 state, regional and national organizations, and so far only one reported receiving any money from Wallen.

-I don’t understand why people don’t scrub their internet history the second they achieve a whiff of fame. Simu Liu is under fire after old Reddit posts he reportedly wrote were uncovered.

-Jane the Virgin star Justin Baldoni‘s does his best Backstreet Boy impression in his hilarious new HP Ink commercial.

Emily Blunt and The Rock proved that tequila makes makes press junkets better.

-I don’t actually think I finished The Haunting of Bly Manor, but I’m going to check out Midnight Mass, Mike Flanagan’s latest for Netflix, because the reviews are excellent. Hamish Linklater and Zach Gilford‘s performances, in particular, keep getting shouted out as exceptional.

-Michael Myers is back in the final trailer for Halloween Kills.

Tom Hanks, a robot, and a dog versus the world in the first trailer for AppleTV’s emotional survival story, Finch.

Hannah Waddingham and Juno Temple: Ted Lasso’s Unlikely BFFs

Ted-Lasso-Hannah-Waddingham-and-Juno-Temple

-I love this profile on Ted Lasso costars and friends Hannah Waddingham and Juno Temple. They talk masculinity, sports, and how Waddingham considers Temple a “fairy godmother unicorn” to her daughter.

-Meanwhile, one thing that came up repeatedly in Jason Sudeikis’ GQ profile is how much like Ted Lasso his friends think he is. Here’s more proof: a journalist shared an email that Sudeikis had written him after their interview three years ago, in which the reporter mentioned that he’d recently lost his dad. It is the most heartwarming, positive, Lasso-esque thing ever. “It’s important and fucking necessary for us human beings to do that. To connect. To share. And to not concern ourselves too much with the outcome of such bravery. Especially the men of the world. Our generation is the first to “understand” that notion, but darn it, I’d love to try and be the first generation of fellas to “live” the notion as well.”

-This is a great deep dive into the inexplicable allure of Pete Davidson.

-In court yesterday, Britney Spears said she wants to charge her father with conservatorship abuse. “I want to press charges against my father today. I want an investigation into my dad….I was always extremely scared of my dad.” She also said her hair vitamins and coffee have been confiscated (“Ma’am, that’s not abuse, that’s just f*cking cruelty. Excuse my language, but it’s the truth”). She gave a shout out to the #FreeBritney movement and used the hashtag for the first time.

Ashton Kutcher said Mila Kunis convinced him to give up his Virgin Galactic ticket. “My wife basically encouraged that it was not a smart family decision to be heading into space when we have young children.”

-I’ve always liked Chrissy Teigen but her latest post is nuts. We’re all emotionally battered from the pandemic, Cubans are starving, Nasa is warning that the moon is wobbling, and she’s over here making posts complaining about being “cancelled”??!? First, if your platform includes 34M Insta followers and 13M Twitter followers, you are anything but cancelled. Second, I will never understand celebrities who don’t seem to have friends they can complain about this shit with in a group chat, rather than airing it all in public.

-The reviews for Apple’s Schmigadoon are decidedly mixed, but I’m still looking forward to it.

-YouTuber and TikToker Hunter “Echo” Ecimovic did an Instagram livestream on Tuesday, saying that he “groomed” Mille Bobbie Brown. She’s having none of it.

-Netflix might be getting into the video games business.

-I love that Kat Graham is in Cannes. She was the best thing about The Vampire Diaries and I only want good things for her.

-Love Actually and Sanditon actor Kris Marshall apologized for his ‘offensive and insensitive’ comments after Death in Paradise exit. He said that he felt his son was becoming “a bit too Caribbean” after spending three years on the island of Guadeloupe.

-I know people really liked the Loki finale, but that was extremely unsatisfying to me. It felt more like a big setup for the future of the MCU, rather than the conclusion of the story they were trying to tell. A show that has — up until this point — been so centered on Loki had a finale that just….wasn’t. (The guest star killed it though.)

-Here’s the first trailer for Taika Waititi‘s new Hulu show Reservation Dogs.

Amber Heard Welcomed a Daughter

Amber Heard is a mom. She revealed she welcomed her first child, a baby girl named Oonagh Paige Heard, via surrogate in April. The actress tweeted “I hope we arrive at a point in which it’s normalized to not want a ring in order to have a crib.”

Taika Waititi seems unbothered by that viral photo of him making out with Tessa Thompson and Rita Ora. “I think in the world of the internet, everything goes away pretty quick. And also, ‘Is it that big a deal?’ No, not really. I was doing nothing wrong. It’s fine.”

Angelina Jolie was spotted hanging out with The Weeknd and now everyone thinks they’re dating.

Lisa Rinna is not loving her daughter hanging out with Scott Disick. “She’s 19, he’s 37 with three kids. Hello!”

-After recordings of the remote audio from Britney Spears’ 24-minute statement during her conservatorship hearing circulated widely online, L.A. County courts have decided to end their remote audio attendance program completely.

Iggy Azalea says she saw Jamie Spears’ “abusive” behavior towards his daughter firsthand.

-TV networks are grappling with whether or not to interview Bill Cosby. Why would they? He’s just going to deny everything and express zero remorse…again.

-Meanwhile Phylicia Rashad tried to walk back her praise of Cosby‘s release.

Tabitha Brown very sweetly told Wendy Williams to mind her own business.

Joy Behar’s reaction to Meghan McCain‘s announcement that she’s leaving The View was everything.

Machine Gun Kelly changed the name of his new movie after Mac Miller’s brother took offense.

The Bold Type’s final season was kinda meh. But at least everyone agreed that Sutton’s wedding dress was hideous.

-This is a really interesting article on the CW dramedy In the Dark (which cast a sighted actress in the role of the blind lead character) and what the performance of blindness means to those with varying degrees of sight.

-Ooh…The Unhoneymooners is being made into a movie. This is one of my fave romcom books.

-I’m digging Taylor Swift‘s new song.

Stephen Lang returns in the Don’t Breathe sequel. Jane Levy, however, does not — and was not impressed by the director’s patronizing comments about how they excluded her for her own good.

John David Washington fights for his life in the trailer for Netflix’s Beckett.
