Canada Celebrates Schitt’s Creek’s Sweep

-Toronto celebrated Schitt’s Creek’s historic Emmy sweep by lighting the CN Tower gold last night, and the cast was loving it.

–Kelly Clarkson opened up about her recent divorce on her talk show’s first day back, saying “Definitely didn’t see anything coming that came, but what I’m dealing with is hard — it involves more than just my heart, it involves a lot of little hearts.”

-When Ellen Degeneres‘ show returned to production this week, she “jokingly” told staff not to look her in the eye. What a funny joke that they must have really appreciated!

–Tiffany Haddish says one of the perks of dating Common is she gets to quarantine at his house. “Yeah, his house is bigger than my house, so that’s nice. He lives in the Hills. It’s nice.”

-Gabrielle Union will lead a table read of a classic Friends episode over Zoom on September 22. If they keep doing these things, the HBO Max reunion will soon become moot … as maybe it should?

-The upcoming season of Supergirl will be its last. Melissa Benoist is pregnant and her husband is no longer on the show, so I wonder if she no longer wants to be stuck in Vancouver for 8 months of the year. I assume some of the actors may end up on the new Superman & Lois show.

-Despite the Daily Mail’s legal defense, Meghan Markle’s lawyers continue to deny she co-operated with the authors of the recently released book Finding Freedom.

–Kate Middleton enjoyed some socially distanced park hangs to support parent-powered support programs.

–Mel Gibson is reportedly making a Passion of the Christ sequel because the bad news just never ends.

-The Billboard Music Awards nominations came out today and Post Malone tops the list with 16 nods.

-Do I have to start watching Jann Arden’s sitcom? Because this clip of her beating up Sarah McLachlan is hilarious.

-This interviewer talking to Judith Butler seemed sympathetic to J.K. Rowling, but Butler was NOT HAVING IT.

–Vanessa Bryant is suing the L.A. County Sheriff and his department, claiming authorities released unauthorized photos of the helicopter crash that killed her husband, Kobe Bryant, and their daughter.

-Is Tenet a flop? It’s complicated but the short answer is yes.

-I’ve been in fandoms. I love fandoms. But sometimes fandoms can be super messy, and it gets even messier when creators/stars try to police them. That said, this is a very good PSA from former RuPaul’s Drag Race contestants about the racism within that fandom.

-Celebrate the first day of fall with the Supernova trailer, which features Colin Firth in a variety of sweaters. He plays a man whose partner of 20 years (Stanley Tucci) is diagnosed with dementia.

Lady Gaga Adjusts Her Plans

–Lady Gaga covers Billboard’s Grammy issue and talks about how Fiona Apple’s Fetch the Bolt Cutters has been getting her through isolation (girl, same), and how she became den mother to a handful of her team who are quarantining with her. I feel really bad for her because I think her new album is great and in any other year it would be taking over the world.

-I love W Magazine’s new photo shoot with TV stars dressing as their fave TV characters. Millie Bobby Brown is Rachel from Friends, Ozark’s Julia Garner dresses as Shiv Roy from Succession, Schitt’s Creek’s Dan Levy is Emperor Peter from The Great, Normal People’s Paul Mescal pays homage to True Detective, and more.

-Covid keeps messing with TV. ABC, which had already renewed Stumptown, reversed its decision and cancelled the show. Sources tell THR it was an expensive show to produce, and paired with missing its fall launch and a planned creative reboot for S2 with a new showrunner, ABC decided to pull the plug.

-Former TMZ on TV, Ellen and Rosie employees detail their experiences with abusive work culture for the Hollywood Reporter.

–Stanley Tucci is releasing a food-themed memoir, which would be annoying if it were anyone else.

-As a TIFF perk, me and some other members are going to be on a Zoom call with Tatiana Maslany tomorrow and they told us to prepare a few questions each. I was stumped about what to ask her and then this news dropped today: she just signed on to play She-Hulk in a new Disney+ Marvel series. Being part of the MCU means I can totally ask her about Chris Evans‘ nudes, right??

-Production on The Batman has resumed as Robert Pattinson has recovered from covid.

-We know Halle Berry has a new boyfriend from her cryptic Instagram posts but she hasn’t revealed who. Now it looks like it’s singer Van Hunt.

–Kanye West was kicked off Twitter for 12 hours for doxxing Forbes editor Randall Lane by publishing his private contact information — all because Forbes didn’t include him in their annual list of billionaires.

–Samaire Armstrong, who played Anna on The OC, is a Trump supporter and called called BLM “a billion dollar domestic terrorist organization.” Wow.

-The 2020 hits just keep coming: Cheer star Jerry Harris was arrested today on a federal child pornography charge.

–Chris Pine and Thandie Newton are teaming up for a spy thriller called All the Old Knives which centers on two ex-lovers who are both spies that reunite for dinner when it becomes clear one of them is not going to survive the night. This sounds like a hotter Mr & Mrs Smith and I’m here for it!

-I don’t watch Real Housewives but my TL seems pretty shook up that NeNe Leakes is leaving. This feels like it will be bad for the future of reaction GIFs.

-There’s been a lot of talk this week about the movie poster for Cordelia, which makes it look like a period romance when it’s actually a modern day horror.

–Joey King accidentally kills her friend in Veena Sud’s The Lie, which hits Amazon Prime next month. I saw this at a film festival last year and liked it, though I have zero recollection of how it ends.

-The best (only?) thing to read today is Robert Pattinson‘s new GQ cover story (complete with some surprisingly good self-portraits). He talks about not training during isolation (“I think if you’re working out all the time, you’re part of the problem. You set a precedent. No one was doing this in the ’70s. Even James Dean—he wasn’t exactly ripped”), and his move to more mainstream movies like Batman (“The problem which I was finding was, however much I loved the movies I was doing, no one sees them. And so it’s kind of this frightening thing, ’cause I don’t know how viable this is for a career. I don’t know how many people there actually are in the industry who are willing to back you without any commercial viability whatsoever”). But the very best part of the article is when he tries to demonstrate how to cook his weirdo signature pasta dish — and ends up setting his microwave on fire.

–Stanley Tucci confirmed Chris Evans‘ tweet about him making martinis at the end of most days while shooting the first Captain America movie. “I like to have a portable cocktail set that I bring to set. And at the end of the day, if it’s an appropriate time, I make martinis for whoever would like to join me. It’s nice. It’s civilized.”

-In the latest episode of his Facebook Watch series, we learn that Justin Bieber thinks it’s funny to surprise wife Hailey with random Nerf gun attacks during isolation. No jury would convict her.

-He also said that she pops his pimples for him.

–Bryan Adams posted some racist drivel yesterday about his concert being cancelled, saying “Tonight was supposed to be the beginning of a tenancy of gigs at the @royalalberthall, but thanks to some fucking bat eating, wet market animal selling, virus making greedy bastards, the whole world is now on hold.” After being thoroughly dragged for it, he didn’t delete the post but he did offer an apology, posting “Apologies to any and all that took offence to my posting yesterday. No excuse, I just wanted to have a rant about the horrible animal cruelty in these wet-markets being the possible source of the virus, and promote veganism. I have love for all people and my thoughts are with everyone dealing with this pandemic around the world.” Canada will never cancel him, no matter what he does, sadly.

-It’s been such a big week for Center Stage news! A new TV adaptation has been ordered from Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (who created Sweet/Vicious and Someone Great).

-This oral history of Mad Max: Fury Road is excellent. Riley Keough met her husband on the set!

-Disney announced that the live recording of the Broadway production of Hamilton, starring Lin-Manuel Miranda and the original cast, will hit Disney+ on July 3. This was originally set for October 2021 as a theatrical release so this is quite a change. It’ll be interesting to see if the curse words get muted for Disney+.

-It’s kind of weird that the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt interactive special dropped today on Netflix and it doesn’t seem like there was any buzz about it.

-I’m sure she hired a PR firm for this, but Alison Roman’s apology is one of the best I’ve ever seen.  She acknowledges her white privilege, the cultural appropriation in the food world, and how no one should be expected to accept her apology or help her improve.

–Chrissy Teigen posted a thread about Roman’s response, saying she wants to put it behind them.

-This is a good piece on how Guy Fieri is the last unproblematic food person. I love this Shane Torres quote: “He goes around the country to small businesses and gives them free advertising on a national platform on a weekly basis, but because his hair looks like he was electrocuted while drinking Mountain Dew, people act like we need to saw his head off and put it on the internet.”

–Jeffrey Katzenberg is blaming the pandemic for Quibi’s rough start (even though every other entertainment streaming service is reporting a search in usage/revenue.) In a new NYT interview, he gets “momentarily steamed” when the topic of TikTok’s growing success is raised. “That’s like comparing apples to submarines.”

-Ink Master star Daniel Silva has been arrested for the drunk driving crash that killed YouTuber Corey La Barrie, who was in the passenger seat. Authorities allege that Silva had to be stopped from leaving the crash site by witnesses.

-Solstice Studios moved up the release of the Russell Crowe thriller Unhinged from September to July 1, hoping it’ll be the first new Hollywood release as theaters reopen. I’ll believe it when I see it.

–Tina Fey hosted a virtual telethon called Rise Up New York and couldn’t hold back her emotions when she learned about the event’s monumental success – they raised $115M.

–Ethan Hawke plays the controversial abolitionist John Brown in the seven-episode Showtime series The Good Lord Bird, based on the bestselling novel by James McBride.
