Keanu Reeves Remains Dreamy

Keanu Reeves wears a striped suit on the cover of Esquire

-My only requirement for a Keanu Reeves profile is that it doesn’t ruin the idea I have of Keanu in my mind (which is, admittedly, a high bar). Luckily, his new Esquire profile certainly doesn’t. I love how he repeatedly laughs off the notion that movie making is hard work (“I mean, ‘hard’? Come on, man. We’re making a movie!”),  and won’t complain when he wakes up feeling crappy and sick during his current routine of travel and constant night shoots (“So? Drink some hot tea with some lemon and honey in it. I don’t know. Slap yourself in the face. Stretch. Concentrate, man”). The part that’s going to get the most play is undoubtedly Sandra Bullock’s story about how he once brought her champagne and truffles because she had offhandedly mentioned never trying them — and when he dropped them off she was painting her nails so he let her paint his, too. All in all, the whole article is worth your time — even though the writer describes the upscale Toronto neighborhood of Yorkville as “bohemian.”

-The splits keep coming: Kaia Gerber and Jacob Elordi have reportedly split after a year of dating, and Batsheva Haart and Ben Weinstein of Netflix’s My Unorthodox Life have broken up after nine years of marriage.  As Jezebel says, the end of the pandemic cuffing season for famous people is here.

-Bucking the trend are Jaden Smith and Phoebe Dynevor, who may be dating. The age difference seems big but she’s actually only 3 years older.

Adele hosted another televised special — this time in the UK, and the audience was even more celeb-packed than the US one. Stars in the crowd included Idris Elba, Emma Thompson, Hannah Waddingham, Emma Watson, Bryan Cranston, Mel B, Naomi Campbell, Josh Gad, Samuel L Jackson and Richard E Grant.

-My favourite part was when Emma Thompson was urging everyone around her to get up and dance. I have been that person at concerts…

-Another great moment was when Adele’s former English teacher surprised her.

Britney Spears praised Lady Gaga for speaking out on her behalf and chided Christina Aguilera for refusing to do the same. Everyone’s blaming Xtina’s publicist, but look at her face before he even jumps in — this was clearly a “no-go” topic.

Taylor Swift has topped both the Billboard 200 album chart and the Hot 100 singles chart. Say what you will, but she’s managed to dominate the charts with songs that are a decade old.

-Meanwhile, there’s renewed chatter that Jake Gyllenhaal runs the Instagram account of a cat named Ms. FluffleStiltskin, who has started scolding about cyberbullying.

-This is neat: Jane Campion used a Jungian dream coach – who is also Sandra Oh‘s mentor – to put the unconscious on screen in The Power of the Dog.

Ridley Scott is blaming The Last Duel bombing at the box office on apathetic millennials. “What it boils down to [are] the audiences who were brought up on cell phones. The millennian, [who] do not ever want to be taught anything unless you told it on the cell phone. This is a broad stroke, but I think we’re dealing with it right now with Facebook. This is a misdirection that has happened where it’s given the wrong kind of confidence to this latest generation, I think.” There’s a few reasons I didn’t see it in theatres, and they had nothing do with age: the marketing and trailers were abysmal, Matt Damon was promoted much more than Adam Driver and Jodie Comer, I’m still not back to my full in-person theatre-going schedule, AND I had zero desire to watch the same sexual assault repeatedly play out from different perspectives. But go off, I guess.

-For non-ridiculous director talk, here’s Paul Thomas Anderson eating vegan Mexican food and chatting with the NYT.

Kristen Stewart, Jessica Chastain, Tessa Thompson, Kirsten Dunst, Jennifer Hudson and Emilia Jones open up about their respective films already gathering Oscar buzz in THR’s first roundtable of the awards season.

Oscars’ best-actor category is shaping up to be this year’s stiffest competition, with Will Smith, Andrew Garfield, Leonardo DiCaprio, Benedict Cumberbatch, Joaquin Phoenix, Bradley Cooper and Mahershala Ali all being bandied about already.

Jason Reitman’s reboot of the Ghostbusters franchise made a respectable $44 million from 4,315 theaters this weekend.

Eddie Redmayne is courting controversy yet again by playing the Emcee in Cabaret — a character that is often played by LGBT actors. While he admits past mistakes (“I made The Danish Girl with the best intentions, but I think it was a mistake”), he says of his new role “Of all the characters I’ve ever read, this one defies pigeonholing. I would ask people to come and see it before casting judgment.”

-We Are Lady Parts has (finally) been renewed for a second season at Peacock. The first 6-episode season was a blast.

-This is a really good example of how dark and grimy TV looks nowadays. It’s everywhere!

-Three autistic roommates try to conquer their fears in the trailer for As We See It, from This Is Us creator Jason Katims.

-Here’s the trailer for Shonda Rhimes‘ latest Netflix show, Inventing Anna, starring Julia Garner as a grifter who infiltrated the NYC socialite scene.

Angelina Jolie Dodges Questions about The Weeknd

-This is a valiant effort by E! News, but Angelina Jolie is staying mum about her relationship with The Weeknd. When asked whether her children were more excited by her role in Eternals or by her friendship with singer, she replied: “They’re very excited about this film… If that’s what you’re asking.”

-A new analysis of tweets about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry has revealed a coordinated campaign of targeted harassment of Markle on Twitter — and only 83 accounts were responsible for approximately 70% of the negative and often hateful content. And those 83 accounts aren’t just run by bots and trolls: “This campaign comes from people who know how to manipulate the algorithms, manipulate Twitter, stay under the wire to avoid detection and suspension. This level of complexity comes from people who know how to do this stuff, who are paid to do this stuff.”

Jon Stewart stood up for his pal Dave Chappelle, saying “I know his intention is never hurtful. He’s not that kinda person.” Which completely misses the point.

-One of the cast members on Rust talked to TMZ about feeling like the camera was more protected than the actors on the shoot.

-TMZ is also reporting that the gun was used by crews members off set as well, for what amounted to target practice. Which is a big no-no, according to safety experts.

-Meanwhile, the film’s 24-year-old armorer was reportedly the subject of numerous complaints on her previous film just two months earlier, and was yelled at by Nicolas Cage for firing without warning him about the noise first, according to a crew member.

-Succession has already been renewed by HBO for season 4.  Thank god.

Penn Badgley is aware that Cardi B wants to appear on the next season of You, but can’t confirm or deny her involvement. “I mean, I definitely can’t say, but there is actually, I believe, this is true, there’s an actual Change.org petition. Changing the world!”

Taylor Swift is very excited about fall. Same, girl.

-Is the Sex and the City reboot staging paparazzi shots to fool us, or is stuff like this nonsense legit?

Megan Thee Stallion has a backup plan — she revealed she’s about to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in health administration after taking online courses at Texas Southern University.

Harrison Ford lost his credit card while filming Indiana Jones 5 in Italy, and a very nice person turned it into a police station instead of buying themselves an island.

-Dune is officially getting a sequel.

Anna Kendrick joined William Harper Jackson at the Love Life premiere, so she must be in the second season a little, right? I found her season very charming, and am looking forward to his season.

-Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk responded to LeBron James’ criticism of the show’s ending, saying “Have you seen ‘Space Jam 2’?” Fair.

-It’s Legends of Tomorrow’s 100th episode this week, and a bunch of familiar faces are returning, including Arthur Darvil, Victor Garber, Brandon Routh and Wentworth Miller.

Sandra Bullock plays an ex-con fighting for her sister in the trailer for Nora Fingscheidt’s The Unforgivable.

Channing Tatum and Sandra Bullock Strike a Pose

-Look at this photo of Channing Tatum and Sandra Bullock in Lost City Of D, a movie about a reclusive romance novelist who goes on a book tour with her cover model. Get in my eyeballs, already!

Brad Pitt won joint custody of his kids and everyone seems kind of surprised by it (which is probs a bad sign). Angelina Jolie‘s team is appealing the decision.

-In this week’s episode of KUWTK, Kim Kardashian revealed that she had covid last fall. Buzzfeed dove into the timeline and worked out that it came soon after her infamous private island birthday bash.

-According to Heather Morris, Naya Rivera was the only “honest” one about Lea Michele‘s behavior on the Glee set. “It’s like, we absolutely could have stepped up and gone to the Fox execs and said how we felt about the situation and nobody really did. So now we are living in a culture where it’s acceptable to go do things like that, whereas I think many people were very scared.”

-I liked this profile on Emma Stone, who talks about Cruella, long cigarette holders, and her own origin story: “All I wanted to do was play the daughter on a sitcom!”

Rosario Dawson tweeted after the court dismissed the anti-trans case against her: “That these false claims came from someone we’ve known as chosen family for decades and who we were trying so hard to help out, as we have many times in the past, was very heartbreaking. Nevertheless, we have great empathy for him and have only ever wished him well.”

Miles Teller is replacing Armie Hammer on The Godfather making-of series, The Offer.

-Speaking of Miles, he was reportedly punched in the face by a stranger while on a trip with his wife, Aaron Rodgers and Shailene Woodley.

-If you need ANOTHER reason to adore Jean Smart, she played her own wax figure in an episode of Hacks (which I just started watching and find delightful).

-Black Panther star Danai Gurira is  getting her own Disney+ series exploring the origins of Wakanda’s Dora Milaje.

Gwen Stefani defended herself against longtime cultural appropriation claims, saying “All these rules are just dividing us more.” Oh no, girl.

-I was pretty skeptical of it, but the Friends reunion was pretty great, especially when it was just the six of them telling stories.

-Everyone’s talking about the Friends reunion but I’m more excited for the Kids in the Hall one.

-I still can’t believe this is Kelly Osbourne.

Chris Noth is coming back as Mr. Big for the Sex and the City reboot.

-The first look at the new Gossip Girl reboot is here. I’m intrigued that Tavi Gevinson is part of the cast, and surprised that Kristen Bell is back to narrate.
