–Reese Witherspoon‘s media company Hello Sunshine (which secures screen rights for books and articles in an effort to provide women in Hollywood with quality material) was named one of Time’s most influential companies.

-Welp, it keeps getting worse. Anthony Hopkins’ reps reportedly pleaded for him to be allowed to deliver his acceptance speech via Zoom since the 83-year-old didn’t want to travel to the Oscars hubs in Dublin or London, but the Academy didn’t allow it.

–Glenn Close insists her “Da Butt” dance was “completely spontaneous” — but she had a little help leading up to it. “We had the MOST FUN at our table at the Oscars last night. Chris Terrio, one of my best friends, who won an Oscar for the screenplay of Argo, was my gallant escort. Daniel Kaluuya and Darrell Britt-Gibson were wonderful table mates. I knew that Lil Rel was going to quiz me about ‘Da Butt’ and all three guys helped me run through what I was to say. Darrell insisted that I mention the Backyard Band, on top of E.U., Suga Bear and the whole DMV. I had googled ‘Da Butt’ and watched Spike [Lee]’s music video so when Lil Rel asked if I could do the dance…you can actually see me think of the video. That part was completely spontaneous. Daniel, Darrell and Chris egged me on!!! It was ALL their fault.”

-This was a good piece on how this year’s Oscars ceremony did nothing to help boost the visibility of the nominees.

-After her Oscar win, Yoon Yeo-Jung made it clear in a Korean interview that she wasn’t fangirling Brad Pitt. I’m not sure her complaints about his production company not upgrading her flights when making Minari make sense though. It was a tiny movie with a tiny budget, so that seems par for the course.

–Joe Rogan currently has the number 1 podcast on Spotify, which means millions and millions of people are listening to him, and he’s using his huge platform to say stupid shit like this.

–Britney Spears‘ sandwich tutorial on Instagram is very sweet, if a little confused.

-Meanwhile, after years of silence, Britney Spears is set to speak in court on her long-standing conservatorship case.

–Elizabeth Banks will star in and executive produce an animated update of The Flintstones, titled Bedrock.

-Wanna be neighbours with Drake? This $45 million under-construction mansion on his street just hit the market.

-There was lots of chatter on Twitter today about Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Sam Taylor-Johnson getting a divorce, but I don’t see any credible sourcing. The only news about them recently is they’re selling their Hollywood Hills home.

-A camera operator on Tom Cruise‘s 1988 comedy Cocktail recalled the time the actor saved Elisabeth Shue‘s life from a helicopter blade: “He lunged after her, but only was able to grab her legs, tackling her to the ground..In that instant, he truly saved her life.” He was also recently spotted saving a cameraman from falling off a train during a stunt on the production of the latest Mission: Impossible movie. It’s kind of astounding how many times Cruise has been a real-life hero, but also — why are movie sets death traps?

-Oof. St. Vincent reportedly got an interview pulled because she found the questions “aggressive.” This trend of musicians fighting against music journalists for simply doing their job is getting old.

-The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s head writer tried to explain one of the show’s worst decisions. It reminds me of this Ringer piece about how the show raised a bunch of tough questions it just wasn’t equipped to explore.

-This is a lovely thread on celebs who are nice. I love whenever these come around.

-Legends of Tomorrow is the only show that can drop a trailer featuring time-travelling aliens, characters turning into cartoons, and a spoof of The Masked Singer, and I’m still all “let’s gooooooooo!”

-I’m really liking Shadow and Bone on Netflix, mostly because they made a number of smart changes from the book that improved a number of its characters.

–Lily James stars in the new trailer for the BBC One miniseries The Pursuit of Love.

–Rose Byrne plays a quietly tormented ’80s housewife whose life changes when she discovers aerobics in the trailer for Apple+’s Physical. Yes, please!!

 

Jennifer Lopez Shines with Short Hair

-I love Jennifer Lopez’s pixie cut on the cover of Allure, but I’m assuming it’s a wig since her locks were flowing at the Super Bowl last weekend.

-In her cover story with Health magazine, Rosario Dawson opens up about raising her 17-year-old adopted daughter from age 11. “To have a young person move in with you and to have to really consciously work through triggers and that kind of stuff is a really different thing than being pregnant and having your baby grow up in front of you—to be able to see how we’re getting closer and closer. We are a family, and it’s beautiful.”

-This is a great piece on Chadwick Boseman, who covers Vanity Fair’s Awards Extra issue.

-I have never written a story a quickly as I did this one about Charisma Carpenter calling out Joss Whedon for a hostile and abusive work environment because I didn’t need to look up any dates or details. Buffy fans have heard these rumours for years, and know what she’s previously alluded to at conventions. It felt like it was only a matter of time after Ray Fisher‘s allegations, not to mention Whedon abruptly leaving his HBO series before it premiered, for this all to come out. Since Carpenter’s tweets, Buffy alum Tara Benson called the show “a toxic environment,” Michelle Trachtenberg said Whedon’s behaviour towards her teen self was “not appropriate,” while Sarah Michelle Gellar gave a more vague statement about not wanting to be forever associated with his name.

–Shia LaBeouf just parted ways with his agency, CAA. He’s been receiving treatment for over five weeks, a source tells Variety, and the actor is currently living at an inpatient facility.

-HBO Max has a straight-to-series order for an adult-focused animated Scooby-Doo origin story about Velma, from exec producer Mindy Kaling, who will also lend her voice in the lead role.

–Princess Eugenie and her husband, Jack Brooksbank, welcomed a baby boy.

-The legal battle over Britney Spears and her conservatorship is set to return to court this week, days after a New York Times documentary outlined the ongoing legal battle. Spears is reportedly hopeful the doc will help turn the tide.

-I really liked this piece on the Britney doc’s structure and why giving it a linear timeline was the correct framing device.

-Speaking of the Britney doc, I loved this piece on how Justin Timberlake should apologize for weaponizing his relationship with women. “Timberlake got to do whatever he wanted for years. Someone let this man do a full minute of mediocre beatboxing in ‘Rock Your Body’ and then we went out and bought the album and thought, Yes, I want to hear this at every wedding I go to for the rest of my life. But he didn’t do any of this alone; he just learned his lesson well: that you can be taller if you stand on the shoulders of a woman with no protection. For many of us, it was easier to just let him win.”

–Esmé Bianco says Marilyn Manson whipped and scarred her on a music video set, and once chased her around their apartment with an axe.

-Our first look at Elle Fanning in season two of The Great show our Empress with a bun in the over.

–Lena Dunham had to release a statement on the use of real cat corpses in her HBO Max’s show Generation, denying knowledge of the incident. She said “I don’t use animal cadavers in any of my work, ever, and I was not on set or aware that they were used in a recently shot scene depicting a biology classroom assignment.”

–Reese Witherspoon was spotted visiting Laura Dern on her birthday.

-#FireGinaCarano is trending worldwide on social media after Gina Carano shared a post that compared being a Republican to being a Jew during the Holocaust. Seriously, how long is Disney going to let her keep doing this stuff? Don’t most talent contracts have a morality clause?

-This year’s Hollywood Reporter’s TV drama actress roundtable features Janelle Monae, Jennifer Aniston, Zendaya, Reese Witherspoon, Helena Bonham Carter and Rose Byrne. I love how Witherspoon, Aniston and Carter are all going on about how the pandemic has given them time to pause and think about the world and Monae says “For me and my people, for the Black community, this is not an exciting time. This isn’t a time that we get to really reflect. We’re dealing with a lot of trauma.”

–Jenny Slate has exited Big Mouth. “Black characters on an animated show should be played by Black people. Me playing Missy, I was engaging in an act of erasure of Black people.” Your move, Kristen Bell.

–Bryan Singer appears to still be preying on boys despite The Atlantic’s explosive expose about him last year. In a new thread, Elijah Daniel details how the disgraced director is still around and allegedly recruiting boys for trips to Hawaii, shifting his focus from aspiring actors to Instagram influencers. Minutes after posting the thread, images of boys with the tag #BryanSinger were scrubbed from Instagram.

–Stephen Colbert interviewed John Bolton last night and did not get off his neck. It was glorious. “How did you not know beforehand that [Trump] was just callow? … You’re an international negotiator. How could you be naive? You’ve dealt with the worst people in the world.”

-The Globes’ TV critic John Doyle spilled some tea on Ben Mulroney and his thin skin in today’s paper. He talked about jokingly creating a ‘most annoying Cdn’ poll in 2003. Mulroney, who was hosting Canadian Idol at the time, tied with the guy from the Canadian Tire ads. “All in good fun. Some of the TV personalities on the list thought it was hilarious. One sent me a bouquet of flowers. I didn’t hear from Ben Mulroney directly of course. Oh my, no. I did hear from Senator Marjory LeBreton, the former deputy chief of staff in Brian Mulroney’s government. Her letter to the Editor-in-Chief and Publisher and CEO of this newspaper, also cc’d me, let me know there was umbrage taken at Ben Mulroney being teased in my column…There was certainly a call or two of complaint to the paper’s then Editor-in-Chief from Brian Mulroney.” While Doyle’s bosses were supportive of him, he says his counterpart at The Sun wasn’t so lucky: “Brian Mulroney was then on the board of Quebecor, which owned the Sun, and the Mulroney family complained to the paper’s bosses about the TV critic’s coverage of Ben. The writer was summoned to a meeting and told, ‘Never type the words ‘Ben Mulroney’ again.’ And he didn’t. He couldn’t.”

-Meanwhile, Lainey reiterated and expanded upon the apology she posted on today’s episode of The Social after her old posts were trending online. This is very well done.

–Penn Badgley spoke about his You costar Chris D’Elia being accused of sexually harassing and grooming underage girls: “It did affect me deeply. I was very troubled by it. I am very troubled by it. I don’t know Chris. I know that, if there’s anything we need to do in this age, it’s to believe women.”

-Days of Our Lives’ Melissa Reeves has come under fire for her anti-Black Lives Matter stance. As someone who once made a scrapbook for Jack & Jennifer’s wedding in her youth, this is super disappointing.

-Brooklyn Nine-Nine is reportedly scrapping four episodes and starting over to focus more on BLM.

-Really liked this piece on how we think of — and what we want from — famous people is changing.

–Roch Voisine was trending in Canada, and I’m so happy that it’s not because he has died… It’s because he’s turned into a stone cold daddy.

–Timothee Chalamet and Eiza Gonzalez were spotted vacationing together in Mexico. How is anyone vacationing right now? I have so many questions.

-TIFF has unveiled the first details about this year’s film festival. It’ll be dramatically scaled down (50 features from last year’s 333), will feature some drive-in screenings, and will have a huge online component.

–John Boyega responded to that viral marriage proposal.

-Netflix’s new cooking show Crazy Delicious is getting great buzz.

–Padma Lakshmi’s Taste the Nation on Hulu is also getting good reviews.

-Eurovision Song Contest, starring Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams and dropping on Netflix this weekend, is getting mixed reviews. Variety says it’s “a badly shot one-joke movie that sits there and goes thud,” while Vulture calls it “glorious,” the Globe & Mail says “it’s barely a movie at all,” and Vanity Fair calls it “silly and fun.”
