Oprah Talks Plans and Planes

oprah-thr-cover

Oprah Winfrey covers the latest THR and her interview is delicious. She reveals that an annoying fan at an airport convinced her to buy a private plane (“She says, ‘Cause on TV you always giving people hugs. I want a hug.’ So I stood up and I gave her a hug and then I went to the phone and called my lawyer and I said, ‘I’m going to do it, I’m going to get the plane. This is going to be my last time waiting four hours in the Chicago O’Hare Airport'”) and was pretty blunt about her time at 60 Minutes and CBS (“How should I say this? Never a good thing when I have to practice saying my name and have to be told that I have too much emotion in my name…They would say, ‘All right, you need to flatten out your voice, there’s too much emotion in your voice.’ So I was working on pulling myself down and flattening out my personality — which, for me, is actually not such a good thing”). Imagine hiring Oprah and then not letting her be Oprah?!?

-Feast your eyes on Keanu Reeves in the new Saint Laurent campaign.

-It somehow escaped my attention that Moby and Natalie Portman used to date but this excerpt about it from his book is great.

Jesse Williams‘ messy divorce continues its messiness. He’s asking a judge to deny his ex’s motion that he pay $200k for her legal bills.

-Variety has released some of the salaries Hollywood movie stars will make on their latest projects. Netflix is pushing up the paydays with Ryan Reynolds getting $27M for Six Underground, and Will Smith getting $35M for Bright 2. For studio films, Margot Robbie, Leonardo DiCaprio, Gal Gadot and Brad Pitt are all reportedly raking in upwards of $10 million for their latest flicks.

-It looks like Randall Emmett has finally paid 50 Cent the $1M he was owed because the Instagram posts about it are now deleted, depriving us of the best clapbacks of all time.

-Buckingham Palace released a statement shutting down the Baby Sussex name speculation.

-I’m loving all the celebrity guests on this season’s Gay of Thrones. This week’s is Gabrielle Union!

-The Game of Thrones cinematographer is defending the latest episode, telling TMZ “I know it wasn’t too dark because I shot it” and Wired “people don’t know how to tune their TVs properly.” That may be true (and I’ve certainly seen lots of spirited and technical defenses of him), but at a certain point — don’t you have to understand the limitations of the technology that most people are going to consume it on and work around that? If the majority people can’t see the thing they were supposed to see, you pooched it.  Though I still maintain that the editing was worse than the cinematography. Like that scene with Sansa and Tyrion when he raises their clasped hands and kisses hers I went, “Wait, they were holding hands? When did that happen? Show that!” And then they moved from their spot in the crypt and did…something. Did Sansa battle some wights with that dagger? Or did they just reposition?

-Empire was just renewed — but Jussie Smollet‘s future on the show remains in limbo. Said Fox in a statement: “By mutual agreement, the studio has negotiated an extension to Jussie Smollett’s option for season six, but at this time there are no plans for the character of Jamal to return to Empire.”

-Well, this is a very worrying and depressing tweet about Britney Spears from a director.

-When Netflix aired 13 Reasons Why, experts warned that it could to cause an increase in suicides especially among adolescents. A news study finds that’s exactly what happened.

-No gonna lie; Zac Efron’s abs freak me out.

-Vogue shot artsy videos of the stars dancing around an exhibit room during the MET gala. The good ones are RihannaCardi BNicki Minaj, and Katy Perry.  The very best one is Frances McDormand dancing to Basement JaxxShe really did look like she was having the night of her life.

Katy Perry flew Kim Kardashian’s press on nails to LA for the MET gala. That’s true friendship.

-At last night’s MET Gala, the theme was Catholicism and the outfits were nuts. I adored Lena Waithe in a giant rainbow capeZendaya‘s take on Joan of Arc, and Blake Lively‘s burgundy number. But no one made me happier than Chadwick Boseman with hair sparkles, and  Frances McDormand  in Valentino.

-I’m really bummed that Scarlett Johansson broke the A-lister embargo and wore Marchesa, despite the Weinstein connection. She says their dresses make women feel “confident.”

Jay-Z, Eminem, Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Aniston and more are demanding money from the Weinstein Company.

-Congrats to Jesse Plemons and Kirsten Dunst, who had a baby boy.

-I don’t even watch Lethal Weapon, but what’s going on with that show is crazy. Clayne Crawford has been fired as the lead of the Fox drama as producers are scrambling to recast the role, and renewal is supposed to hinge on who they cast. Multiple actors have already passed, according to THR.

-All of the original Avengers got matching tattoos, except for Mark Ruffalo, who opted out. (But Chris Evans has a plan to get him “blackout drunk.“)

-The R. Kelly house continues to crumble before our eyes. Two new accusers appeared on Megyn Kelly Today to detail sexual the harrasment they faced: “You weren’t free to walk throughout the house…We were required to call him Daddy.”

-This makes my heart sad: Colton Haynes has filed for divorce from Jeff Leatham after just six months of marriage. Rumours started circulating this weekend after he released a new song about a cheater, and a blind item began circulating. Haynes shut down speculation that Leatham cheated on Twitter, but did not deny the split. Poor guy; he just lost his mother, too.

Kristen Stewart is looking at Cate Blanchett exactly how I would.

-Here are all the references in the new Childish Gambino music video you probably missed. (I know I did.)

-I can’t stop watching this video of Mariah Carey putting makeup on a stranger.

-Why the hell did The Hollywood Reporter gives Jeffrey Tambor and his sexual harassment allegations a sympathetic, soft-focus profile?  “I did raise my voice at times, I was moody at times, there were times when I was tactless…But as for the other stuff, absolutely not.”

-Meanwhile, the cast wants extra compensation for Netflix’s recut episodes.

-Cancel Bear (who is usually spot on about these things) posted his TV renewal predictions for networks. On Fox, he thinks Gotham and Brooklyn Nine-Nine are toast, Kevin will no longer be saving the world on ABC but Quantico should get a pass, on NBC all their new comedies and Timeless are likely done, while almost every show on CBS and CW are safe (minus CW’s Life Sentence and Valour, which were both just cut).

Ta-Nehisi Coates on Kanye West is the one thing you need to read this week if you haven’t already.

-There have been some very, very good takes about what went down at FanCon. Today’s Vulture piece, which failed to interview the BGN writers who quit or the vendors affected, is not one of them.

-Ryan Reynolds using Canada to promote Deadpool 2 in Europe is a good time.

Cher is a scene-stealer in the new Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again trailer.

A Wrinkle In Time Stars Cover Time

wrinkle-in-time

-A Wrinkle In Time stars Mindy Kaling, Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Storm Reid grace the new Time cover.

-Is Brad Pitt getting ready to debut a new girlfriend?

-Wow, the backlash to The Last Jedi came hard and fast. Most of the criticism I saw on Twitter was about its failure to answer questions The Force Awakens raised, which is just a big shrug emoji for me.

-Also, I really liked this article on Rey and Kylo (and I can’t believe that people are actually shipping them).

-Speaking of ships, here were the top 5 shipper moments on TV this year.

Sophia Bush opened up about her shocking exit from Chicago P.D. I love this part: “[I told them] I’m giving you 23 episodes notice. I’m giving you that much time. So there will be no conversation in which I was hysterical, emotional, in which I was being a quote irrational female or whatever you want to put on it. I’m literally sitting in front of you like cool as a cucumber. If this has to be like a big swinging d— competition, I promise you I will win.”

-You know a TV episode has gone off the rails when the star of Riverdale has to reassure fans that she was was fully involved in a striptease scene.

-Hollywood has clearly run out of ideas. NBC is eyeing a revival of The Office, with a mix of old and new castmembers.

-This gallery of Prince Harry as a third wheel made me laugh.

Rose McGowan  dragged actresses like Meryl Streep for planning to wear black in protest at the Golden Globes, and then Amber Tamblyn dragged Rose for dragging Meryl, and then Meryl was like “um, what’s with all the dragging?” I don’t disagree with Rose that the black dress this is kind of pointless. I like the suggestion that a big name actress take the founder of #MeToo as her date.

-The director of Bad Santa has come forward to say he was also discouraged from hiring Mira Sorvino. Can she sue Miramax for damages?

-Here’s a great suggestion: hire women whose careers were destroyed by Weinstein.

-God good, how has no one stopped Matt Damon from talking yet?!? Now he’s saying that when it comes to whether or not he’d work with someone accused of sexual misconduct: “You know, it would be a case-by-case basis.” He also insists we aren’t talking enough about men in Hollywood who aren’t predators. GAH!! He needs a time out.

-This is a great read on how Hollywood’s sexual offenders should face the law. This was the one thing that struck me about Damon’s initial comments (beyond being fed up with men’s knee-jerk reaction to immediately feel the need to qualify/rank offences, as if misconduct isn’t all stemming from the same systematic, power tripping issues), was his comment about how Louis CK has already paid such a “price” that Damon is sure he won’t do it again. What price? The loss of a career (that btw was a privledge, not a right?). That’s not a price, that’s a consequence. Dude exposed himself to unwilling participants. That’s a criminal offence. He should be rejoicing for escaping jail time.

Mario Batali sent an email apology for his “wrong” behavior that included a link to a recipe for cinnamon rolls in the same email.

-Actress Amy Smart is defending husband and HGTV star Carter Oosterhouse after he was accused of sexual misconduct.

Jason Priestley recalled the time he punched Harvey Weinstein in the face at a Golden Globes afterparty in 1995.

-When Kate Winslet started talking about working with Woody Allen during the LA Times roundtable, the faces Margot Robbie and Jessica Chastain made were priceless.

-Amazon just passed on all three of its pilots from the fall season. That’s depressing.

-Watch Jodie Foster reprise her Silence of the Lambs role to investigate Trump-Russia ties in a Late Show skit.

-Director Tracy Letts says everyone was nervous on the set of The Post, except Carrie Coon. “She just has ice water in her veins. She’s like an assassin. She’s the one person who was not nervous, and I think everybody found that a little disconcerting.” God, I love her.

-I totally forgot that one of the girls in Parenthood once convinced all of her costars to be in a music video, and even got Michael B Jordan to rap in it. It holds up.

Rachel Bloom installed a ball pit in her house and she’s my new hero.

-This is a very cute clip of a guy who proposed with Neflix’s help. “Drew Barrymore said my name!”

-This clip of Michael Shannon on At Home with Amy Sedaris is everything.

-The Ocean’s 8 trailer drops tomorrow but here’s a 15-second teaser. Are they eating at Veselka? God, I love this movie already.

-Here’s the trailer for Clint Eastwood’s real-life drama The 15:17 to Paris, starring Judy Greer and Jenna Fischer.
