Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana in Spencer

-The first poster for Kristen Stewart‘s Princess Diana biopic is goddamn art. Footage from the movie debuted at CinemaCon (where movie studios/distributors try to impress theatre owners/exhibitors) and word is that she’s “nailing Diana’s whispery tone of voice and accent.”

-CinemaCon attendees were also treated to new footage of Robert Pattinson in The Batman, and a teaser trailer for The Matrix: Resurrections, which shows Neo meeting Trinity in a coffee shop and asking “Have we met?”

-With every new article on how the staff at Jeopardy is unhappy with Mike Richards and how everything went down, I keep expecting him to be cut loose. But NYT’s latest story about it says Sony wants him to stay put. “In a show of defiance that has baffled Hollywood, Sony signaled it will keep Richards on as executive producer of Jeopardy & Wheel of Fortune. During a call with Jeopardy staff Monday, Sony’s top TV executive made clear the studio supported Richards.”

-A court has granted Megan Thee Stallion‘s request to release her remix of BTS’ “Butter” on Friday after her label tried to block it.

–Kanye West’s listening party tomorrow in Chicago for his upcoming album will admit up to 38,000 fans, but there’s no requirement for a COVID-19 test or proof of vaccination. What could possibly go wrong?

-Earlier this week in the UK, Tom Cruise needed somewhere to land his helicopter when he went to a meeting because the local airport was shut, so he asked a nearby family if he could use their field — and then repaid them by treating the kids to a helicopter ride. Upon hearing the news, James Corden told his own story about Cruise texting him about meeting for dinner and asking if he could “land his heli” in Corden’s tiny downtown yard.

–Spike Lee is getting heat for devoting a significant amount of time in his new four-part HBO documentary series to a 9/11 conspiracy theorist (which seems to fit with his own worldview, judging by his new NYT interview, in which he cites the widely debunked theory about steel not being able to melt at those temperatures.) He’s now re-editing the docuseries and asking people to “hold judgement until you see the final cut.”

–Mandy Patinkin responded to a fan’s question about The Princess Bride and my god, how his response made me cry.

-Speaking of celebs who made me cry today, here’s John Cena meeting a young fan who he inspired when his mom was going through cancer treatments.

–Madonna celebrated the 9th birthday of her adopted twin daughters, Stella and Estere, with a cute Instagram post.

-Ted Lasso stars Brett Goldstein and Juno Temple did an interview with the LA Times about why Roy and Keeley’s relationship works. (It works because it’s following a tried-and-true trope of romance novels: the grump who’s paired with the ray of sunshine).

-Meanwhile, here’s a clip from this week’s episode.

-Hulu says the Nine Perfect Strangers premiere was the most-watched Hulu original ever. I’ve seen the first three episodes and I basically want to fast-forward past everyone who isn’t Melissa McCarthy and Bobby Cannavale and pretend I’m watching a sequel to Spy.

–Hayley Williams and Josh Farro are now credited on Olivia Rodrigo‘s “good 4 u” after people kept pointing out the song’s similarities to Paramore’s “Misery Business”.

-The Flash will kick off Season 8 with a five-part special event that brings back fan-favorite heroes and villains from across the Arrowverse, including Arrow’s Kat McNamara and Neal McDonough, Batwoman’s Javicia Leslie, Legends’ Brandon Routh and Ryan Choi, Black Lightning’s Cress Williams, Supergirl’s Chyler Leigh, and The Flash alum Tom Cavanagh. It’s like a crossover except most of those people aren’t trying to concurrently film another show, so it won’t break the actors like usual (while at the same time offering the Flash regulars a bit of a break). I’m especially surprised by Routh’s inclusion as it seemed his departure from the Legends was less than amicable.

-Meanwhile for the Supergirl series finale, former cast members Mehcad Brooks, Chris Wood and Jeremy Jordan are coming back.

-Oh god, there’s rumbling again about NBC rebooting The Office. I loved this show, but please don’t.

–Jennifer Carpenter will appear in Showtime’s forthcoming Dexter revival as a regular — despite the fact that her character died in the series.

–Betty has been canceled after two seasons at HBO. Too bad. I haven’t gotten around to the latest season, but it was always a fun hang.

-The Nevermind baby is suing Kurt Cobain’s estate and the surviving members of Nirvana for child sexual exploitation.

-This is incredibly smart of Netflix — they’ve just announced their own sort of virtual ComicCon. TUDUM is a virtual fan event coming September 25, in which Netflix stars will introduce exclusive first looks of upcoming shows and films.

–Charlie Cox is an ex con who gets mixed up in a cartel in the trailer for AMC’s Kin.

–Grace Van Patten and Mia Goth star in the Mayday trailer.

The Weeknd Talks Darkness and Drugs

–The Weeknd covers the Sept issue of GQ and talks about his dark persona (“I am not dark. My art is dark, and I’ve gone through dark times. I’ve used those dark times as inspiration for my art. But I feel like because I’m not dark, I was able to channel it and put it into my music and into my art”), quitting drugs (“Drugs were a crutch. It was me thinking that I needed it. And not doing the work to figure out how not to need it. And I’ve spent the last few years realizing that and thanking God that I don’t need it”), and bingeing The X-Files during the pandemic (“Everyone copied them, bro. Everyone”).

-In her new GQ profile, Olivia Rodrigo says she’s been following the Britney Spears news closely. “I think, as an industry, people are getting better at not taking advantage of and manipulating and bullying young women. But it’s still so apparent, and I witness that too. Not near at the level that Britney has, obviously. I think that’s an important paradigm that I hope that we’ll be able to break in the coming generations. I’ve definitely seen corporate dollars be prioritized over people’s mental health.”

-Meanwhile, Britney Spears’ lawyer has filed to expedite the removal of Jamie Spears as conservator.

–Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber‘s charity single “Stuck With U” has helped many, many families of first responders.

–Courteney Cox posted an IG video of her playing piano as her 17-year-old daughter Coco sang Adele‘s “Chasing Pavements.”

-This is a fascinating look at how Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson so rarely has an on-screen romance — and why big Hollywood blockbusters have begun to eschew romance plots in general. I always assumed it was a personal preference that some actors have (character actor Neal McDonough won’t kiss anyone who’s not his wife), but it also points to a larger trend towards sexless action heroes. Maybe because Hollywood has gotten criticism for writing women as one-note love interests, it’s just opted to not include them at all instead of writing fully fleshed out love interests. Which sucks.

-Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist may be rescued by Roku! The streamer is eyeing a wrap-up movie.

-The Met Gala is normally held in May but was pushed back this year. Page Six reports that those making the cut for invites include Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, Emily Ratajkowski, Camila Cabello and Lupita Nyong’o.

-Is South Park still popular? Let’s hope, since its creators just signed a $900 million deal to release 14 movies.

-Jeopardy is reportedly close to picking its new full-time host — and it looks like it’ll be Mike Richards. I really thought it’d be Levar Burton, Ken Jennings or Aaron Rodgers. Richards is a producer on the show and the fact that he’s in late stage negotiations is leading a lot of people, including a contestant during his run, to think this was always in the works and the guest host appearances weren’t ever about auditioning for the gig.

–Taylor Swift is teasing a Phoebe Bridgers collab. Yes, please!

-I really like this list of the 40 best musical performances on TV. No one but Prince at the Super Bowl could be number 1, but the one that’s stuck in my brain craw remains TV on the Radio’s Letterman appearance at number 5.

–John Corbett and Bo Derek, who’ve been together for 20 years, got married last Christmas.

-I’m so confused about why Kristen Bell had a stylist for her recent road trip.

–Ryan Reynolds says wife Blake Lively often does uncredited punch ups on the scripts of his movies.

-With Free Guy getting good reviews (currently 84% fresh), THR profiles director Shawn Levy, who seems to keep his head down and do the work. He currently has 15 projects in development for Netflix.

-I mainline teen movies — the cheesier the better — but He’s All That might be a bridge to far for even me. Luckily, the trailer recaps the entire movie so I don’t even need to watch it.

-Here’s the trailer for the much-delayed new series Y: The Last Man, based on the beloved graphic novel.

Britney Spears Is Stronger Than Yesterday

-Today, Britney Spears‘ conservatorship case was back in front of a judge at Los Angeles Superior Court. The judge ruled that the singer can finally select her own attorney instead of getting court-appointed counsel.

–Olivia Rodrigo visited the White House to urge young people to get vaccinated, saying she’s “beyond honored and humbled” to “help spread the message about the importance of youth vaccinations.”

–Lindsey Shaw, who I only know from the TV version of 10 Things I Hate About You, posted a video mocking one of the viral dances created by Black creators, and then posted another video crying about “the hate in my inbox” and pulled a “I am sorry you were offended.” Yikes.

–Gillian Anderson has arrived at the same place as many of us post-pandemic: she’s vowed to never wear a bra again.

-Bridgerton creator Chris Van Dusen talked about the show’s 12 Emmy nominations and what to expect from season 2. “Kate Sharma, played by Simone Ashley, she is a force to be reckoned with, and we pair up with her Anthony Bridgerton, played by Jonathan Bailey, who’s just incredible. The two of them, they are magnetic. You cannot take your eyes off of them when they’re together on screen.” I’m looking forward to it; Kate was my fave character in the books.

-I’m not a fan of this Dolce & Gabbana on Sharon Stone, but I am a fan of the resurgence of red carpets!

-As much as I liked Loki, I would have been fine with it being a one and done, but it just got renewed for a second season.

-It’s hilarious how Marvel has made its casts so scared to talk about spoilers, even after they’ve been given the greenlight.

–John Mayer says his new record is intentionally terrible. “For me, it was like, I want to get in trouble. I want someone to tell me this is shit. And I made a record that to me at the time, only in a way to coax something out of me that I wouldn’t have normally done: shitpost a record. It’s called Sob Rock because it’s a shitpost.” That’s one way to get ahead of criticism, I guess.

–Justin Bieber dropped $1k in a weed store in 20 minutes, which actually doesn’t sound that hard to do.

–Kristen Stewart and Dylan Meyer have been spotted wearing rings, leading to marriage speculation.

–Hilary Duff posted a series of photos on Instagram documenting her daughter’s birth, and I had now idea her Younger costar Molly Bernard was her doula!

-The unofficial Celine Dion biopic Aline screened at Cannes today and it sounds insane. 57-year-old writer-director-star Valérie Lemercier plays all incarnations of Dion — including when she was a 5-year-old.

–Eddie Murphy’s son and Martin Lawrence’s daughter are dating.

-The Other Two is coming back August 26. God, I loved this sitcom.

-Netflix’s Never Have I Ever has returned, and the new season is getting great reviews.

-Red Rocket is getting raves at Cannes. It’s from The Florida Project director Sean Baker and follows Simon Rex, who plays a washed-up porn star who returns to his hometown in Texas to try to get his life together.

-There’s some weird corporate synergy to having Deadpool and Korg reacting to the trailer to Ryan Reynolds’ Free Guy, but it’s really funny so  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. “Jodie Comer! God, I love her so much. I hope they don’t fridge her.” “What’s fridging?” “Well, it’s the practice of killing off or hurting a female character in order to motivate or torture the main character, also known as Deadpool 2.”

-Here’s the trailer for Blackpink the Movie, the upcoming documentary about the k-pop group which is set to screen in theaters worldwide in August.
