SAG Awards 2018: Best and Worst Dressed

While the recent Golden Globes red carpet was a sea of black gowns, celebrities brought colour back in a big way at the SAG Awards (but weirdly, most seemed to drop the #TimeUp pins). But on the plus side, E! seemed to get the memo and asked actors about the movement instead of just talking about it with the actresses. Meanwhile, the winners were basically a repeat of the Globes with 3 Billboards leading the way, which…oof.

Fashion-wise, the good outweighed the bad, but not everyone knocked it out of the park. Here are my picks for the best and worst dressed at the 2018 SAG Awards.

Grownish star Yara Shahidi proves that jumpsuits can make just as much of an impact as a ballgown. This look is fire!

Orange is the New Black star Danielle Brooks‘ red and black sequined gown by Marc Bouwer is one of my faves of the night. Simply stunning.

Silver sequins are a very big theme on this red carpet, with Allison Janney and Olivia Munn serving up some fierce metallic looks. But no one did it better than Lupita Nyong’o in this flattering, form-fitting Ralph & Russo. I want to marry this dress.

I love Stranger Things star Natalia Dyer’s look. She knows how to dress for her petite frame, and the embellished skirt on her Christian Dior gown is a weird twist worthy of her show.

Gina Rodriguez is one of the few women to wear a #TimesUp pin which makes us love her. We’re also feeling the love for her detailed floral Rasario number.

Honourable mentions: Samira Wiley, Allison Williams, Brie Larson, Halle Berry and Mary J. Blige

Pale pink is a major theme, with Margot Robbie, Dakota Fanning, Marsia Tomei, Laura Linney, Connie Britton, and Millie Bobby Brown all sporting the hue. Frankly, I don’t love any of them, but Saoirse Ronan is the worst for me. She’s always taking risks this year and I love her for it, but this Louis Vuitton dress is a miss. The silver strip looks like it was added at the last minute and is barely hanging on.

Kate Hudson has a badass new haircut and should be wearing a badass dress to match. Instead, she looks like an old-timey grandma in this matronly Maison Valentino.

When I first saw Laura Dern I could only see the top half of her Dior and was so hopeful. And then the camera panned down to reveal the sheer madness of the bottom. Any dress that makes it look like you’re wearing grey granny panties should be an automatic “no.”

I love the structure of Holly Hunter’s Paule Ka dress (and it has pockets!), but I hate the colour. To be fair to her, I’m not sure anyone could possibly make this work. Greta Gerwig had a similar colour issue with her dress.

How does a bad outfit like this happen to a good person like The Shape of Water star Sally Hawkins? I don’t understand.

Dishonourable mentions: Alison Brie, Nicole Kidman, Elisabeth Moss, Yvonne Strahovski, Maya Rudolph

Laura Prepon and Ben Foster Are Engaged

Laura Prepon and Ben Foster just started dating this summer, and now they’re engaged. She showed off her ring at the Girl on the Train premiere (and tagged it on Twitter). I guess this means he’s a Scientologist too?

-Speaking of The Girl on the Train premiere, I did not love Emily Blunt’s dress.

-A source close to Angelina Jolie tells People that she and the kids have started therapy, adding “It’s been a traumatic situation.”

-Sending good thoughts Kid Cudi‘s way, who has checked into rehab for depression and suicidal thoughts.

Jenni Konner’s story about the ridiculously gross things Lena Dunham‘s male peers say to her is horrifying.

-There are already some insane conspiracy theories about the Kim Kardashian robbery.

-Meanwhile, Paris police say Kim‘s social media made her an easy target.

-The father of Millie Bobby Brown, who plays Eleven on Stranger Things, has reportedly been demanding what amounts to a signing fee for the privilege of representing his daughter. To get Millie to sign with an agency, her dad is asking for $100k upfront. WHAT?

Lin Manuel-Miranda wishes he could get his hands on Hamilton tickets of his own in his SNL promos.

Kristen Chenoweth sang the Game of Thrones’ theme, and it was awesome.

-Shocking report: canceling a subscription to Jessica Alba‘s Honest Company is ludicrously hard.

Ellie Goulding says she has no plans to have a baby with Prince Harry. Wait, was that even an option?!

Radiohead just debuted the Paul Thomas Anderson-directed video for ‘The Numbers‘.

-This is a really interesting take on why critics raved about Birth of a Nation at Sundance, and have since fallen out of love with it.  I can certainly relate to the first point about the festival haze; I’ve gotten totally swept up in movies at TIFF and Cannes, only to watch them months later and wonder what I was thinking.

-This is a bummer: Chrissy Teigen has set her awesome Twitter account to private, saying “My body and mind cannot handle it anymore”

-I got up at the buttcrack of dawn today to go to a Gilmore Girls-themed Luke’s Diner (spoiler alert: there was still a line). The pop up was to celebrate the 16th anniversary of the show. They also released this adorable featurette in which the cast reflects on their fondest memories.

Jordan Peele of Key & Peele fame made a horror movie. Here’s the trailer for Get Out. It’s incredibly creepy.

Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard’s spy romance gets dangerous in new the Allied trailer.
