Succession’s Sarah Snook Secret Wedding

Succession star Sarah Snook wears a red strapless dress on the cover of Vogue Australia

-Succession star Sarah Snook revealed she got married to comedian Dave Lawson during COVID lockdown — and it sounds the premise of an excellent romcom. She told Vogue Australia, “At the beginning of the pandemic last year, I got locked down in Melbourne with one of my best mates and we fell in love…We’ve been friends since 2014, lived together, traveled together, always excited to see each other, but totally platonic. We’ve just never been single at the same time. I proposed and we got married in February in my backyard.”

-Meanwhile, last night’s Succession season premiere was worth the two-year wait.

Sean Penn’s wife has already filed for divorce after a year of marriage.

Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker are engaged, and that’s how I found out her family calls them “Kravis.”  Is there a way I can un-know this?

Adele is doing a two-hour special on CBS airing on Nov 14, where she’ll perform her hits and never-before-heard songs along with an exclusive interview with Oprah. It’ll air on Global here.

-Meanwhile, Adele says that she played her new album for Drake and asked his opinion. “I’m like, ‘Do you think this is like, what people want or not want?’ And he was like, ‘Absolutely.'”

-Queer Eyes’ Jonathan Van Ness, Jameela Jamil, Sara Ramirez, Angelica Ross, TS Madison, Eureka O’Hara and Colton Haynes are among the stars reportedly working on a PSA to support Netflix’s trans workers who are planning a walkout on Thursday.

Billy Porter was not impressed by all the attention Harry Styles got for wearing a dress on the cover of Vogue — because he led the way. “I changed the whole game. I. Personally. Changed. The. Whole. Game. And that is not ego, that is just fact. I was the first one doing it and now everybody is doing it.

Emma Watson broke her red carpet hiatus — with pants.

Zendaya continues to crush it on the Dune press tour.

-A guy made a song based on the texts his mother sent him while she watched You, and it’s hilarious. (I’m halfway through the new season and it’s really, really good.)

-Disney just pushed back a bunch of its release dates. Sequels for Marvel’s Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Ant-Man and Thor — plus the next Indiana Jones movie — are all being delayed.

-The Y: The Last Man team is looking for a new network home after FX on Hulu canceled the series. It’s really strange that FX would announce this before the season’s last three episodes even aired.

-The news that Mel Gibson will lead the John Wick prequel at Starz is not going over well. The Continental will explore the origin behind the hotel-for-assassins in the John Wick universe, but any enthusiasm people had for this prequel seems to have evaporated with this casting news. Hard pass.

-I don’t watch The Great but these images of Gillian Anderson in season 2 are tempting me.

-The Ridley Scott–directed, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck–cowritten film The Last Duel flopped at the box office.

-Every new trailer Jeremy Renner’s new series Mayor of Kingstown is more incoherent than the last.

-The first full trailer for The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson, debuted Saturday at the DC FanDome virtual event, giving fans a glimpse at director Matt Reeves’ DARK take on the Caped Crusader.

-Other trailers that debuted at DC FanDome include Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam, John Cena’s Peacemaker, and Ezra Miller’s The Flash.

-Here’s the first trailer for Maggie Gyllenhaal‘s haunting directorial debut, The Lost Daughter, starring Olivia Colman, Dakota Johnson, Peter Sarsgaard and Paul Mescal. It’s adapted from Elena Ferrante‘s book and was well-received on the festival circuit.

Jennifer Hudson Talks Playing Aretha

Law Roach is on fire right now. He styled pregnant Halsey’s Allure cover, as well as InStyle’s Jennifer Hudson one. In the interview, JHud talks about stepping into Aretha Franklin’s shoes for her new biopic Respect, and how her dogs predict success. “I got the dog Oscar before I won my Oscar for Dreamgirls. And then I said, ‘Oscar needs a wife. So how about I get a dog and name it Grammy, and maybe I’ll win a Grammy.’ And then I got the dog Grammy, and I won the Grammy.”

-In his new GQ profile, Jason Sudeikis says he still doesn’t know why Olivia Wilde left him after nine years together. “I’ll have a better understanding of why in a year, and an even better one in two, and an even greater one in five, and it’ll go from being, you know, a book of my life to becoming a chapter to a paragraph to a line to a word to a doodle.” He added, “That’s an experience that you either learn from or make excuses about. You take some responsibility for it, hold yourself accountable for what you do, but then also endeavor to learn something beyond the obvious from it.” He also confirmed they split “in November 2020” (so months after their rumoured split in March 2020, but before she was spotted holding hands with Harry Styles in January 2021).

-The Crown, Mare of Easttown, The Queen’s Gambit, and the recently cancelled Lovecraft Country were some of the shows leading the Emmy nominations this morning. I’m glad that Ted Lasso scored 20 nods, including 6 for Supporting Actor/Actress (all but Phil Dunster, who plays Jamie), that The Boys snuck into Best Drama category, that Michaela Coel’s I May Destroy You got some love, and that Jean Smart was nominated for both Hacks and Mare of Easttown. But it sucks that Girls5Eva didn’t make it into the Best Comedy section.

-I agree that these five nominees are among the top to root for. Roy Kent!

-Eyewitnesses claim that video of Justin Bieber appearing to yell at wife Hailey Bieber is misleading.

Britney Spears’ personal conservator Jodi Montgomery claims her dad, Jamie Spears, used $2 million of her funds for his defense.

Scarlett Johansson chatted with Seth Meyers about her pandemic wedding to Colin Jost. “Obviously we wanted to take all the precautions, every precaution that we could, so we had the masks [with ‘Jost 2020’ on them] made. It definitely was a weird party favor that could only happen now, but you just gotta go with it.”

Drake‘s girlfriend has been revealed to be 40-year-old model Johanna Leia, who he’s reportedly been dating for several months.

-Seems like Olivia Rodrigo is over that guy she wrote “Driver’s License” about; she’s dating Adam Faze.

-I always worry that Joshua Jackson is going to end up disappointing me, but not today! His Esquire interview is excellent, especially the part where he talks about having a home birth because “the American medical system has a horrendous track record with Black women.” The accompanying video is also great, including when they ask why he’s turned his Instagram into a stan account for his wife. “I think it’s important to celebrate women in media where they want to be, rather than the objects that we want them to be.” Gah! Perfection!!

-I liked this love letter to the bad girls of 90s teen dramas. Justice for Rayanne Graff, Kim Kelly and Jen Lindley!

-A video appears to show Mel Gibson saluting Donald Trump as he arrived at UFC 264 on Saturday evening. How is anyone at all surprised by this?

-Tilda Swinton and Timothée Chalamet were all kinds of cute together at Cannes.

-For the same premiere, Owen Wilson (who I’m convinced will end up being the bad guy in this week’s Loki finale, because the person behind the TVA can’t just be some random dude, right?!) also looked great.

-Meanwhile, here’s a clip from the movie (Wes Anderson‘s The French Dispatch), featuring Chalamet having a bath in front of Frances McDormand.

-I’m very ready to watch Karen Gillan, Lena Headey, Angela Bassett, Michelle Yeoh, and Carla Gugino kick butt in Netflix’s Gunpowder Milkshake this weekend, which is getting decent reviews.

-Here’s the trailer for Netflix’s conversion therapy documentary Pray Away, from producers Ryan Murphy and Jason Blum, and directed by Kristine Stolakis.

-Disney/Pixar’s new movie Turning Red takes place in Toronto!

Taylor Swift Spins a Compelling Tale with Folklore

-What are we all thinking about Taylor Swift‘s new album? I’m only two listens in but I’m digging it. It’s restrained and contemplative (but not introspective — some of the songs are clearly fiction, like “The Last Great American Dynasty,” which is about Rebekah Harkness who once owned Swift’s house, or “Cardigan,” “August” and “Betty” — which is a trilogy revolving around a high school love triangle. Of course, many people think the trilogy is really about Karlie Kloss). My favourite songs from her in the past few years are “Archer” and “Dress,” so I was already in the bag for stripped-down Taylor.

-The reviews are overwhelmingly positive, with the Guardian giving it 5 stars and saying while it’s “Swift’s most coherent record since her staunchly country days, it’s nonetheless her most experimental, developing on Lover’s stranger, more minimalist end,” Buzzfeed saying that “in isolation, alone with a paper and a pen and a guitar, she’s yet again written some fucking great songs,” Rolling Stone praising it for “the most head-spinning, heart-breaking, emotionally ambitious songs of her life,” Billboard noting “there’s nothing quiet about this songwriting tour de force,”  Teen Vogue saying “in her restraint, she leaves space for couplets that slice through the heart,” and Variety observing “at least this one won’t require an album-length Ryan Adams remake to convince anyone that there’s songwriting there.”

Jennifer Lopez turns 51 today, just in case you want to feel bad about yourself.

Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani debuted the video for their new duet “Happy Anywhere”, which was shot by her brother, Todd Stefani, who quarantined with the couple at Shelton’s Oklahoma ranch.

-There was a panel for The New Mutants at Comic-Con and I think everyone is shocked that it’s still going ahead.

Mel Gibson‘s rep reveals he was hospitalized back in April with covid. Unlike Tom Hanks, I guess he didn’t feel the duty to share his experience and educate his fans on the seriousness of the virus.

-Here’s another good breakdown of the Britney Spears conservatorship.

-I don’t believe for a second any of the “ratings” numbers Netflix releases, but if they’re bragging about the performance of Charlize Theron‘s Old Guard, hopefully that means a sequel is coming.

-Also, Charlize doesn’t strike me as the most social media plugged in celeb, so her responding to fan praise is great.

-This is a really good piece on how baffling it is that this far into the streaming wars, nobody (not even Netflix) seems to know how to build a good user interface, making browsing a headache and searching an embarrassment. I recently did a Happy Endings rewatch on Amazon Prime and every single time I’d have to search for the next episode, even though I’d watched the previous one the day before.

-Speaking of Amazon Prime, How To Build a Girl starring Beanie Feldstein hits the streaming service today. I saw this last year at TIFF and was very charmed by it.

-Stranger Things’ Joe Keery plays a rideshare driver on a murder spree on the trailer for Spree.
