Sandra Oh is a Person of the Year

Sandra Oh in a pink top on the cover of People

Sandra Oh has been named one of People’s People of the Year, and talked about inspiring others (“It means so much to me to be on this cover. When I was growing up, I never saw my face on the cover. To be asked to be on the cover is a great privilege, because it normalizes things for my nephews and nieces”) and how her impromptu speech at a Stop Asian Hate rally went viral (“There was a lot of pain and outrage, and when that happens, you need to gather together. That’s the only way to get through. If you’re standing side by side with someone who’s not your gender or not your race, you can go, ‘Okay, we have commonality.’ We need to move through fear”).

Michael B. Jordan covers THR and talks about growing his empire (“To be young, Black and successful — and disruptive — in this industry, there’s a certain navigation to get to the place I need to get to. And you try to hold that moment and stay in it for as long as you can”) and posting about his relationship with Lori Harvey on social media (“There’s a premeditated planning of staying out of the way [of the public eye] that sometimes kills spontaneity and intimacy. I wanted to take that away and give this the best chance it had, in this weird world that we live in, to be somewhat normal”).

Ben Affleck talked to Wall Street Journal’s magazine about second chances — both in his career and in his love life. However, he’s trying to create boundaries when it comes to sharing details. When asked about Jennifer Lopez, he said, “You can write conjecture about it, but one of the harder lessons that I have learned is that it’s not wise to share everything with the world. There are some things which are private and intimate and have meaning in terms of their intimacy by dint of the fact that they’re not shared with the rest of the world. I’m more comfortable just learning to find a boundary between things that I want to share and things that I don’t.”

Alec Baldwin gave an “intense” post-Rust interview to ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos. It’ll air tomorrow, but they released a clip of him tearing up.

-Everyone’s sharing their Spotify Wrapped lists today. In the meantime, Spotify announced that Bad Bunny edged out Taylor Swift for the coveted title of their most-streamed artist of 2021.  This marks the second year in a row for him to get the honour — and he didn’t even release a new album this year.

-Succession’s J. Smith-Cameron says she has “no issue” being a sex symbol. We don’t have an issue with it, either!

-Meanwhile, Matthew Macfadyen discussed which of Tom’s relationships is more secure: Shiv or Greg.

Sandra Bullock was on Red Table Talk and discussed her terrifying home invasion in 2014 (“The violation of that. I wasn’t the same after that, I was unraveling…I haven’t been alone since the day it happened”), and how she told her photographer boyfriend Bryan Randall that she was adopting another child (“We hadn’t been together that long and I go “You remember that NDA you signed when you photographed my son [at the birthday party where we met?] You know that still holds?’ And he said “Yeah, ok, why?’ And is said, “Cause I’m bringing a child home when I come back from Toronto”).

-Awful: legendary music exec Clarence Avant‘s wife was shot and killed in a home invasion robbery.

-Four more families have turned down Travis Scott’s offer to pay for the funerals of family members who died at Astroworld.

-Congrats to Kathy Griffin, who told Jimmy Kimmel that she’s officially cancer-free.

-Shawn Mendes apparently wants joint custody of a dog named Tarzan following his split with Camila Cabello.

-Yellowjackets is a new show that seems to be sneaking onto people’s radar. I wonder if it’ll end up on some Best of 2021 lists?

-Speaking of Best of lists, I’m surprise how many movie ones have Drive My Car on them. I gave up on that film an hour and a half in.

-Only Murders in the Building has started shooting season 2!

-Should I start watching the Great British Bake-off? Everyone who does just seems really happy with that decision.

Michael Sheen gets a glimpse of his bleak future in the trailer for Last Train to Christmas.

-Neo experiences deja vú in the new trailer for Matrix: Resurrections.

Angelina Jolie Accuses Brad Pitt of Skimping on Child Support

-The Angelina Jolie/Brad Pitt divorce continues to disintegrate. Court docs reveal that she accused him of not paying enough in child support. His lawyer quickly shot back, saying her filing was “unnecessary, omits material information and is a thinly-veiled effort to manipulate media coverage” and says the actor has “paid over $1.3 million in bills for the benefit of [Jolie] and the minor children.”

-Meanwhile, Jolie‘s divorce lawyer hasn’t quit (as was previously reported), but the client/attorney relationship may be tense.

-This story about Leonardo DiCaprio’s chin being edited out of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood promos thrills and delights me.

Kathleen Turner gives zero f**ks in this interview and it’s everything. She talks about not enjoying working with Nicolas Cage and Burt Reynolds, how she didn’t feel welcomed by the Friends cast, and mocks method actors (“In Crimes of Passion I was playing a designer by day, $50 whore on Hollywood Boulevard by night. Do you think I was going to hang out with whores on Hollywood Boulevard and find out what the f**k that was like? I have an imagination, you know. My belief is that all the information I need is in the script. And if it’s not, then it’s not a good enough script”).

-Jeebus F. Murphy, what is The Academy doing? They announced some new changes to the Oscars, including a three hour max telecast (sure), an earlier air date (putting it much closer to the SAGs and Globes, which isn’t great) and most perplexing, a new category to honour “popular” films. This is *such* a dumb idea. Why double down on this idea that “art house” should be separate from blockbusters? Especially since it felt like we were making progress, with genre fare like Get Out, District 9 and The Dark Knight scoring best picture noms. Relegating movies to a pandering “popular” category means the snobbier voters will feel like they are giving mainstream/diverse movies a bone without actually having to give them a real award. It’s the worst kind of gatekeeping — and the fact that they’re making this change in the year when Black Panther is getting Oscar buzz is terrible optics. ABC execs reportedly pushed for the changes in the face of declining ratings, which doesn’t even make sense. By that logic, the People Choice Awards would be the biggest rated awards show.

-Oh, now The Academy is saying a movie could potentially be nominated for both popular film and best picture. Sure.

-As expected, ABC fired Roseanne for more than just one tweet. At the TCAs, the network’s president said “For us, we have had multiple instances with Roseanne, and certainly this tweet crossed the line that cannot be crossed, but it was for us a sense of enough is enough and something had to be done.”

-How the heck did Ariana Grande injure herself filming Carpool Karaoke?

-This is a great look at the rise of the “art bro” as celebrity arm candy.

-Is Vanity Fair going through an identity crisis?

-I was off for a few days so I missed the Beyonce Vogue cover, but wow. I know I shouldn’t be advocating for a celebrity to have complete editorial control over a publication, but wow.

-Aw man, Cameron Esposito and Rhea Butcher have split.

-I agree that Melissa Benoist should get a shot at the upcoming Supergirl movie. While I would probably recast most of the CW’s supporting characters if their superhero shows went to the big screen, their TV leads are all good enough to carry a film.

-Speaking of CW stars, Grant Gustin slammed body shamers after a photo of his new suit leaked online.

-The Cut’s guide to celebrities and their pastors is a good read.

-Netflix’s Insatiable looks like it has a really terrible premise, but according to reviewers it’s even worse than advertised.  Variety calls it “jaw-droppingly toxic,” Buzzfeed says it’s a “fat-shaming dumpster fire,” The Daily Beast says its fat-shaming “is the least of its problems,” and FastCompany says the trailer was only “the tip of an extremely irresponsible iceberg.”

-I love love love this profile of Glen Powell on how he carries himself like an old-school movie star.

Kourtney Kardashian and Younes Bendjima have split up, possibly because of this woman.

-This is a great profile on Henry Golding, a travel host with no acting credits to his name who became the leading man in three upcoming films, starting with Crazy Rich Asians.

-Jonah Hill and Emma Stone lose their minds in the trailer for the upcoming Netflix series Maniac.

-Pride and Prejudice costars Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen reteam in the The Nutcracker and the Four Realms trailer. Succession has really re-ignited my Macfadyen love, so I’m kinda into this.
