Carey Mulligan and Emerald Fennell are Promising Young Women

-Christmas Day is going to be a bonanza of new content. We’ve got Bridgeton on Netflix, Wonder Woman 1984 on HBO Max and Promising Young Woman on video on demand. (I had no idea that writer-director of PYW is Emerald Fennell, who played Camilla on the most recent season of The Crown.) She and Carey Mulligan cover Variety and talk about making the most audacious, feminist movie of the year.

-Speaking of cover stories, this is a very good one from THR on the career implosion of Johnny Depp, a casualty of Hollywood’s sycophant culture in which his wild spending and substance abuse were rarely challenged. “He’s just never been told no for the past 35 years.” Some of the highlights: despite being fired from Fantastic Beasts after only shooting one scene, he’ll still be paid his full $16-million fee due to him having “a pay-or-play contract, which requires that he be fully compensated whether or not the film is made and even if it is recast,” production on Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales had to be shut down for two weeks after Depp reportedly swallowed eight ecstasy pills, and his romantic partners allegedly include former co-stars Angelina Jolie, Marion Cotillard, and Keira Knightley.

Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn cover the latest issue of People and talk about their 37-year relationship. “People who have been together for a long time, they experience something that only people who have been together for a long time can talk about and relate to. For people like us, the marriage certificate wasn’t going to create anything that otherwise we wouldn’t have.”

-This is a great piece on how 2020 was the year celebrities lost their shine. “With little else to do, celebrities have been showing their asses at every opportunity. Similarly, as we sit at home with nothing to do, we have been more than willing to hand their asses to them with newfound rigour.” (Dolly Parton is the only celeb I can think of who is ending the year with an even stronger reputation than she started it with.)

-Is EVERYONE going to be in the new Spider-Man movie? Charlie Cox is reportedly reprising his Netflix role as Daredevil in MCU’s Spider-Man 3.

-Disgraced Hillsong pastor Carl Lentz has entered treatment for anxiety, depression, and burnout.

-A True Blood reboot is in the works at HBO. This is weird, mostly because there are SO many buzzy supernatural books out there right now that they could adapt instead. When True Blood was good, it was good but I remember longgggg stretches where it was very, very bad.

Shawn Mendes played Spill Your Guts with James Corden and had to eat blood and pork jelly to avoid picking between who he liked collaborating with more: Justin Bieber or Taylor Swift. He also refused to answer how much he’s been paid for his Armani endorsement, which led to him eating scorpion dusted plantains.

Nicolas Cage enthusiastically gives an etymological lesson on the word “pussy” in the first trailer for Netflix’s History of Swear Words, debuting Jan 5.

Natalie Portman appeared on Dax Shepard’s podcast discussed how “being sexualized as a child took away from my own sexuality because it made me afraid. It made me feel like the way I can be safe is to be like, ‘I’m conservative, and I’m serious, and you should respect me, and I’m smart and don’t look at me that way.'”

-Memoirs continue to be a cash cow for celebs. Amazon Studios is prepping a new docuseries about Jessica Simpson based on her memoir, while Mariah Carey says she’s in talks for a potential movie or TV series based on hers.

-Mariah also gave props to Vulture’s latest article on her pop perfection.

Victoria Beckham gushed about son Brooklyn’s wife-to-be Nicola Peltz in a new interview. “They’re so happy. She’s wonderful, sweet, and kind. She’s such a lovely, warm woman. We couldn’t have asked for Brooklyn to meet a more adorable lady. We’re very, very happy. We love her, he’s so happy.”

Jason Sudeikis talked about how his character on Ted Lasso was inspired by Robin Williams. I didn’t think I was going to like that show, but it ended up as one of my faves of the year.

-The Riverdale season 5 trailer proves the show is still as bonkers as ever.

-A married man is tricked into a murder scheme by a police detective in the trailer for Fatale, starring Michael Ealy and Hilary Swank.

Laura Prepon and Ben Foster Are Engaged

Laura Prepon and Ben Foster just started dating this summer, and now they’re engaged. She showed off her ring at the Girl on the Train premiere (and tagged it on Twitter). I guess this means he’s a Scientologist too?

-Speaking of The Girl on the Train premiere, I did not love Emily Blunt’s dress.

-A source close to Angelina Jolie tells People that she and the kids have started therapy, adding “It’s been a traumatic situation.”

-Sending good thoughts Kid Cudi‘s way, who has checked into rehab for depression and suicidal thoughts.

Jenni Konner’s story about the ridiculously gross things Lena Dunham‘s male peers say to her is horrifying.

-There are already some insane conspiracy theories about the Kim Kardashian robbery.

-Meanwhile, Paris police say Kim‘s social media made her an easy target.

-The father of Millie Bobby Brown, who plays Eleven on Stranger Things, has reportedly been demanding what amounts to a signing fee for the privilege of representing his daughter. To get Millie to sign with an agency, her dad is asking for $100k upfront. WHAT?

Lin Manuel-Miranda wishes he could get his hands on Hamilton tickets of his own in his SNL promos.

Kristen Chenoweth sang the Game of Thrones’ theme, and it was awesome.

-Shocking report: canceling a subscription to Jessica Alba‘s Honest Company is ludicrously hard.

Ellie Goulding says she has no plans to have a baby with Prince Harry. Wait, was that even an option?!

Radiohead just debuted the Paul Thomas Anderson-directed video for ‘The Numbers‘.

-This is a really interesting take on why critics raved about Birth of a Nation at Sundance, and have since fallen out of love with it.  I can certainly relate to the first point about the festival haze; I’ve gotten totally swept up in movies at TIFF and Cannes, only to watch them months later and wonder what I was thinking.

-This is a bummer: Chrissy Teigen has set her awesome Twitter account to private, saying “My body and mind cannot handle it anymore”

-I got up at the buttcrack of dawn today to go to a Gilmore Girls-themed Luke’s Diner (spoiler alert: there was still a line). The pop up was to celebrate the 16th anniversary of the show. They also released this adorable featurette in which the cast reflects on their fondest memories.

Jordan Peele of Key & Peele fame made a horror movie. Here’s the trailer for Get Out. It’s incredibly creepy.

Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard’s spy romance gets dangerous in new the Allied trailer.

So, Is Brad Pitt Being Investigated For Child Abuse Or Not?

jolie-pitt-divorce-people

-The big story today was that Brad Pitt is being investigated for child abuse after an alleged meltdown last week on a private plane, as reported by both People and TMZ this morning. This seemed to shed light on the inciting “incident” that both Us Weekly and Lainey referred to when first reporting on the sudden split. According to the reports, an allegedly inebriated Pitt was verbally and physically abusive with one of the kids, and the incident spilled over onto the tarmac, where he reportedly tried leaving in one of the fuel trucks. But then things got a little blurry this afternoon, with a spokesperson for the LAPD insisting to The Hollywood Reporter that there is no active investigation against Pitt. However, he’s not off the hook. People then clarified their story, saying he’s being investigated by the L.A. County Department of Children and Family Services, not the LAPD.  TMZ then added to their story, saying the LAPD does not have an active investigation underway because they transferred the case to the FBI since the alleged incident occurred in the air and then the plane landed in Minnesota, not in their jurisdiction. People and Us Weekly  are now both reporting that the case has been referred to the FBI, with Us Weekly adding that both Pitt and Angelina Jolie spoke  to the DCFS after the jet incident.

-And yet, in spite all of the madness surrounding today’s news there’s still no rebuttal or denial from Pitt’s team hours after this story first broke. According to Lainey, it’s because he’s worried that if he comes out strong against this, there might be more receipts. There’s already talk about how the alleged incident may affect his custody chances.

-Meanwhile, People managed to get their Brangelina cover in under the wire after all (sorry Michael Strahan). According to them, she offered to file the papers together but he begged her to hold off.

-In other news, Marion Cotillard  firmly denied those Brad Pitt affair rumours and announced her pregnancy in one Instagram post.

-It’s probably not a good sign that the latest SNL cast member deleted 2k tweets after getting hired — and then deleted her entire account.

-Speaking of SNL, Margot Robbie will host the season premiere with The Weeknd as musical guest.

-Man, this THR interview with 17 TV showrunners pissed me off. The part where almost all of them turned their noses up at live-tweeting (“a garbage idea perpetuated by garbage people”) is mind-boggling. They all have shows on the big 4 networks — where pretty much the only thing keeping audiences watching broadcast TV live in the age of DVRs, on demand cable and streaming is Twitter. Way to piss off an engaged fanbase that’s giving you loads of free promotion, assholes. Is it because they want everyone to watch their shows with rapt, undivided attention? Cause that’s not how the world works anymore.

-I haven’t watched the Mr Robot finale yet but the headlines this morning were…not great. Critics calling it “a cautionary tale” and “a pile of pretentious bullshit” do not leave me eager to catch up.

Neil Patrick Harris‘ family takes Halloween way too seriously.

Hillary Clinton appeared on Zach Galifianakis’ Between Two Ferns. Considering all of his questions must have been vetted, it’s impressive he got to ask some of these.

-In a new interview, Lindsay Lohan makes abuse claims against former fiancé, saying she feared he’d splash acid in her face.

Michael Strahan is #sorrynotsorry about the way he left Kelly Ripa on Live!

-Fred Armisen and Bill Hader made the perfect prestige food-porn parody.

-The new Walking Dead trailer focuses on Ezekiel, ruler of the Kingdom.

-The first teasers for Ghost In Shell show Scarlett Johansson as Major Motoko Kusanagi.
