Michaela Coel Plots Her Next Move

michaela-coel-variety

-Variety’s Power of Women covers continue to crush it, but the Michaela Coel one is spectacular. In the interview, she talks about Jane Fonda being a fan of I Will Destroy You (“I imagine if I bumped into her outside of the supermarket, we’d be nerding out on all of the hidden meanings and layers because I can see that she really gets it. She watches it the way that I dreamed the audience would watch it”), and “meeting” Kerry Washington at the SAG Awards (“I imagine, if the show was in real life, she’d be sat over there and I’d be way too shy to go over and say, ‘Hey, I’ve been watching you on my screen for decades.’ I was still too shy to say any of that on Zoom, but she knew my name. I was like ‘Oh my God, hi!’ You can’t do that in real life”)

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have shared a never-before-seen pic of Archie on his 2nd birthday. They’re asking fans to celebrate by donating to the Vaccine Alliance.

Mariah Carey posted a video of getting her second shot and panned to the florescent lights saying “Would I ever go into this lighting for no reason?” I love her.

Paris Hilton addressed one of her most controversial outfits, claiming she never wore a tank that said Stop Being Poor and it was photoshopped. I don’t know if that’s true?

Jessica Alba is having a good week. Her Honest Company officially went public, raising $413 million in its IPO.

-Sanditon’s cancelation has been reversed by PBS, which just ordered two more seasons of the show. I’m guessing this wouldn’t have happened without the breakout success of Bridgerton. I liked the first season well enough but it has the potential to be much better.

Lilly Singh’s NBC late-night show is coming to an end, but she’s keeping busy. She’s set to star in a scripted comedy for Kenya Barris at Netflix and develop unscripted far for NBCU.

Camila Cabello’s jump to acting hit a road bump. Her Cinderella movie is skipping its planned theatrical debut and heading straight to streaming.

-Why yes, I will read an oral history of Madonna’s Truth or Dare, thank you.

-Michael B. Jordan says he bombed his Star Wars audition because the franchise’s secrecy gave him no time to prepare.

-I feel like the Tina Fey-produced new Peacock series Girls5Eva is exactly what I need these days. (It’ll premiere in June on W in Canada.)

Gina Rodriguez stars in the trailer for Netflix’s Awake, in which the entire world goes crazy after everyone is suddenly unable to fall asleep. As someone who occasionally suffers from insomnia, this whole premise freaks me out.

Chloë Sevigny, who is 9 months pregnant, shows off her baby bump in a nude shoot for The Cut.

Jimmy Fallon and Kate Hudson reminisced about almost dating after Almost Famous, with her telling him: “You gave me no indication…If you would have actually made a move, I would have totally gone there.” Nicole Kidman also once told him that he’d missed his shot.

Rob Lowe says that when he and Tom Cruise were cast in The Outsiders, they were flown to NYC and put up at The Plaza, and 18-year-old Tom went “ballistic” at having to share a room.

Olivia Munn says Bryan Singer walked off the set of X-Men: Apocalypse in Montreal to fly to Los Angeles for approximately 10 days to deal with a “thyroid issue,” leaving the production to scramble without a director.

-I really can’t handle any stories about Jeff Goldblum being problematic right now.

-Someday I hope we get the full story about how Archie Panjabi and Julianna Margulies‘ feud on The Good Wife got so bad, the show had to film their final scene separately and use special effects to splice them together. But today is not that day. When asked about the rumored behind-the-scenes tensions in an interview with The New York Times, Panjabi demured, telling the interviewer, “You’re very naughty, Jessica.” When pressed, the actress very tactfully answered: “I completely understand why everyone asks about it. Everybody I meet asks me about it, in some roundabout way…I’ve said what I’m going to say.”

-What will TV and movie productions look like once filming resumes? Studios are talking about closed sets, airline-style packaged meals, fewer location shoots, and shooting sex scenes with actors separately and then bringing it together in post-production. Maybe Archie Panjabi and Julianna Margulies could give them pointers?

Lea Michele is expecting her first child. Seeing how she’s still posting about her wedding, I’m already cringing at what her Instagram feed will look like in the coming months.

Brian Austin Green and Megan Fox appear to be quarantining separately.

Lilly Singh is getting some flak for cultural appropriation after posting this dancehall video, seeing as she has no Caribbean heritage.

-Facebook announced the star-studded lineup for its upcoming event, Graduation 2020: Facebook and Instagram Celebrate the Class of 2020. John Krasinski is also planning something for the graduating class of 2020 on his next episode of Some Good News.

-The cast reunions continue. The actors from Goonies got together for the Center for Disaster Philanthropy, while the cast of Melrose Place is set to reunite to support the Actors Fund.

-One thing I love about the CW is they seem to really encourage their actresses to try directing. Supergirl’s Melissa Benoist directs the May 3 episode.

-Don’t you hate when you forget about your giant penis art? Phoebe Waller-Bridge was on The Graham Norton Show and showed off the ‘wall of penises’ prop from season 1 of Fleabag. “You know when you just put something down at your house, and then you don’t think about it for ages? It just becomes invisible to you, and you forget that you have 12 massive penises at your front door. And this delivery guy came and I just completely forgot. He kind of had to like bring something in and he was like knocking against the cocks as he was coming in and I suddenly saw them again for the first time in ages. I was like ‘Oh god, I’m so sorry’ and he just looked me dead in the eye and went ‘It’s art. Never apologize for art.’ ”

-With everything that’s been going on in the world, news about the Pentagon releasing UFO footage has been lost in the shuffle. Even more lost in the shuffle? The fact that the footage first surfaced thanks to Blink-182’s Tom DeLonge.

-In the new trailer for Homecoming season 2, Janelle Monáe tries to unlock the secrets of her identity. Is that Joan Cusack?!

Angelina Jolie’s Crush on Michelle Pfeiffer

-I am very much here for this clip of Michelle Pfeiffer asking Angelina Jolie ‘Was I your teen crush?” and Jolie responding “Actually…yeah definitely…when you sang ‘Cool Rider’ you were very hot. And Scarface.” Same, girl.

-Every bit of this Antonio Banderas profile in GQ is great, but the part that’s especially great is when he’s asked a simple question about voicing animated characters and then it turns into a thoughtful answer on how Hollywood uses race to construct its villains.

-I wish Gwendoline Christie wore this dress to the Emmys instead of that Jesus-y robe thing. This one has me 🤤

-The reviews are in and though some critics question the film’s timing and message, everyone seems to agree that Joaquin Phoenix delivers an outstanding performance in Joker. (I do find it interesting that a lot of the negative reviews are coming from female critics.)

-Whoa, Jimmy Kimmel caught Joaquin Phoenix completely off guard last night when the actor was talking about what a light, happy set Joker was and Kimmel said “It’s interesting that you say that because Todd [Phillips] sent an outtake reel” and then proceeded to show a clip of Phoenix angrily muttering to cinematographer Lawrence Sher: “The constant whispering, just shut the f**k up, dude. I’m trying to, like, find something real. I know you started the f**king Cher thing, Larry, f**king making fun of me, like I’m a f**king diva. It’s not even an insult. Cher, really? Singer, actor, dancer, fashion icon? How is that a f**king insult? F**k it, I can’t do this” before walking off the set. The show cut back to a cringing, visibly uncomfortable Phoenix. “This is so embarrassing. Yeah look, sometimes movies get intense because you’re a lot of people in a small space and you’re trying to find something so you can feel intense. But that was supposed to be private. I’m a little embarrassed. I’m sorry about that. I’m sorry you guys had to see that…There’s no excuse for that. You shouldn’t talk to people [like that]…My publicist will issue a formal statement tomorrow. Can we move on?” Whew lordy, watching temperamental dudes to get called out for crap that women could never get away with is like my Super Bowl!

-On a similar note, I appreciate all the shitty Todd Phillips’ quotes and clips that are surfacing.

-I can’t stop watching videos of Hailey Beiber trying to avoid being snapped walking down the aisle by photographers in helicopters above by hiding under a tent carried slowly to the ceremony.

-Despite signing a new deal with Amazon, Phoebe Waller-Bridge says she has no immediate plans to bring back Fleabag. “I like the idea of coming back to her, well me, when I’m 50. Because I feel like she would have had more life then, and god knows what she would’ve gotten up to. Seeing a character like that in a later stage of life is exciting but I think for now, she’s been through enough. We gotta let her go.” Thank gawd.

-The story about the Canadian woman who went hiking and was stalked by a cougar until she scared it off with Metallica has hit the late night talk show circuit.

-This video of Lilly Singh teaching Americans Canadian/Toronto slang is all kinds of perfect.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is shilling for Colgate (you get that toothpaste money, girl) and talking about the possibility of a Buffy reboot: “You know, I think ultimately you realize that you tell a story at the time, and then you close that chapter. For me, I think it’s best because I’m at a different point in my life than I was when I told that story. So, any incarnation that I did now would be different anyways? So, I’m not sure if they totally work together.”

Will Smith just dropped a limited-edition clothing line inspired by The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. 1993 me would be very excited about this. 2019 me is like “huh.”
