Carey Mulligan’s American Style

carey mulligan instyle cover

Carey Mulligan covers the June issue of InStyle and mentioned something I’d never really considered before: British people don’t typically wear baseball caps. “I used to feel self-conscious about wearing one because I’m not American, but it’s a great way to navigate life without makeup.”

-I unfollowed a lot of (mostly white) celebrities on Instagram this weekend. If they hadn’t said a peep about what’s going on in the world or didn’t choose to go dark to cede the spotlight to those more qualified to speak on it and instead used their huge reach to show off pics from their pool or some shit, then bye-bye. I was, however, impressed by how many were using their platform to amplify black voices and spread the word about donations/resources, including some I found entirely unexpected like Grant Gustin, Blake Lively (who had a plantation wedding), Chris WoodTimothée Chalamet, and John Cusack.

-Insecure actor Kendrick Sampson was protesting peacefully when police pointed a gun directly at him before hitting him with rubber bullets (seven times) and with a baton.

-I don’t watch 9-1-1 but I’m guessing it’s going to be tense on set when filming resumes. Ryan Guzman is facing major backlash after admitting that he uses racial slurs. Meanwhile, Oliver Stark (whose character many fans ship with Guzman’s character) has been using his social media to amplify black voices all this past week and does not seem impressed by his costar.

-I love how quickly K-pop stan Twitter worked together to crash an app encouraging Dallas residents to rat out protestors.

-In news that should suprise no one with eyeballs, Julianne Hough has split from her husband.

Prince Andrew is permanently retiring from public life. He’s still screwing up, though! He’s reportedly been sued for failing to pay what he owned on a Swiss ski chalet.

-Kensington Palace is planning on taking legal action over Tatler’s Kate Middleton cover story.

-I didn’t know that Josh Lucas and his ex-wife Jessica Ciencin Henriquez had reconciled, but apparently they had because she just accused him of cheating on her during the pandemic.

-Remember when Silicon Valley star Thomas Middleditch gave an interview in Playboy in September where he said swinging saved his marriage? Yeah, she’s left him.

Camila Cabello wrote about her struggles with OCD and anxiety.

-If you haven’t read Forbes’ article from Friday entitled “Inside Kylie Jenner‘s Web of Lies — And Why She’s No Longer a Billionaire” it’s worth your time. It’s hilarious that her response was “i can name a list of 100 things more important right now than fixating on how much money i have”, seeing as the whole point of the article is how her family is so fixated on how much money they have that they’ve been going to great lengths to lie about it for years.

-Insecure is having one of the best seasons on TV right now.

-Killing Eve just wrapped up one of the worst. Pajiba just called it “the new Dexter.” Ouch.

Cush Jumbo, who plays Lucca Quinn on The Good Fight, is leaving show. She said in a statement “Due to the pandemic forcing us to shut down early we weren’t able to wrap up Lucca’s story fully and so I hope if schedules allow I can return next season to do that.”

Nina Dobrev and Shaun White have gone Instagram official.

-I’m catching up on the J.K. Rowling Twitter controversy. So…she just had a transphobic statement already copied on her clipboard? Yikes.

-Why are people still interviewing Woody Allen about this stuff? Why?

Four women filed a new rape and sexual assault suit against Harvey Weinstein and Disney.

-Here’s the full trailer for HBO’s Perry Mason reboot, starring Matthew Rhys. When this was announced last year I wasn’t sure I’d be into it, but this seems like exactly the kind of comfort food I need right now.

Schitt’s Creek Checks Out

Schitts Creek finale

-I’m not ready for Schitt’s Creek to be over (like, literally — I still have half a season to catch up on), but EW’s cover story with Dan Levy and Noah Reid is beautiful.

Rihanna and Drake were interacting in the comments of DJ Spades’ Instagram Live and when he got too complimentary of her, she wrote “Give Drake some water.” Absolute perfection.

Ariana Grande and her new bf are sheltering-in-place together.  TMZ calls him “a high end real estate agent who handles multi-million dollar listings for L.A.’s A-list buyers” so hopefully he’s found them a good place to hunker down.

-Outlander star Sam Heughan is getting dragged for posting photos from his Hawaii vacation in the middle of a pandemic. Seriously celebrities, just put down your phones. You’re all sucking at this.

Prince Charles has tested positive for covid-19 but is only displaying mild symptoms.

-In other royals news, The Sun continues to stoop low by stirring up rumours about Prince Harry and ex-girlfriend Chelsy Davy.

-Good hometown boy Shawn Mendes is donating $175,000 to Sick Kids in Toronto to assist in purchasing equipment and supplies for coronavirus preparedness.

Kylie Jenner is also stepping up in a big way, donating $1 million to buy PPE.

Ryan Reynolds is donating 30% of his Aviation gin profits to out of work bartenders.

-Meanwhile, Kourtney Kardashian’s 10-year-old son said on Instagram that Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott are not back together — and then his account promptly got shut down because 10-year-olds are not supposed to be on Insta.

-I love that Jennifer Garner keeps shouting out Victor Garber. Spy daddy!

-I had never heard of Netflix’s new documentary Tiger King a couple of days ago, and now it’s EVERYWHERE. People are obsessed. I have to watch this thing, don’t I?

-The Walking Dead’s Andrew Lincoln serenaded Danai Gurira to celebrate her last episode.

-While talking to Variety, novelist and showrunner Michael Chabon went off on a tangent about what he originally wanted Picard to be like, and as someone who has given up on that show, oh how I wish he’d have stuck with it: “I always said if we could have just done a whole show about Picard and the dog on the vineyard in France, with no starships, no phasers, the only Romulans would be those two Romulans who work for him on the vineyard, and no politics — just, like, there’s a funfair down in the village and they all go, and maybe Picard solves a very low stakes mystery in the village, like, someone has stolen the antique bell out of the bell tower, or something like that?”

Chris Evans plays a man trying to shield his son from a murder rap in the trailer for Apple TV+’s upcoming show Defending Jacob.

Robert Downey Jr. Makes a Little Boy’s Day

-A 10-year-old boy with autism who became verbal after getting an Iron Man helmet got to meet Robert Downey Jr. This is all incredibly sweet.

Beyoncé’s IVY Park x adidas fashion collection is about to drop online – and I’m loving how she recruited celebs to help spread the word. (I am NOT loving how I am officially too old to pull off anything from this collection.)

-Interesting to see TV media stepping up to defend Meghan Markle.

-Not surprisingly, Gigi Hadid was dismissed from the Weinstein jury.

January Jones confirms she dated Bachelor alum Nick Viall after he slid into her DMs.

-NBC unveiled their new streaming platform Peacock. It’ll have a library of NBC shows and Universal movies, as well as new projects from Norman Lear, Amy Poehler, Will Forte and Mindy Kaling,

-I finally caught up on the CW superhero crossover and it was a convoluted, emotionally empty mess — but this cameo was insane.

-I really like this piece on the inception ending of Little Women. (There’s a debate if the end scenes can be interpreted as representing the ending of the book Jo wrote rather than the life she went on to lead.)

-Um, these Zoe Kazan comments are really something.

-They may have broken up, but Jessie J was spotted hanging out with Channing Tatum and his daughter.

-Here’s the trailer for romance drama Olympic Dreams starring Nick Kroll — the first ever feature film shot in an Olympic village. I listened to Kroll talk about its production and it sounded really cool (they shot it during the 2018 Winter Olympics).

The Lovebirds trailer has Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani playing a couple who are framed for a murder and decided to try to find the real killer. Oh, I’m gonna watch this one A LOT.
