Issa Rae’s Next Chapter

issa rae vanity fair cover

Issa Rae is on the cover of Vanity Fair and talks about letting go of Insecure (“I told myself I would never write and be in a show that I created again. It takes up a lot of your life, and I like to do a lot of things. I love doing this show. I’m so grateful to be able to do this show. But that’s just not really for me”) and bringing Project Greenlight back with a focus on female filmmakers (“I want this version of the show to make filmmaking feel attainable”).

-So it’s true: Ariana Grande tied the knot with real estate agent Dalton Gomez in a secret ceremony on Saturday.

-Congrats and godspeed to Naomi Campbell, who is a new mom at 50.

Emma Watson tweeted for the first time since August to dispute a retirement and engagement report.

Kaia Gerber is on the cover of Vogue’s new issue.

Tiffany Haddish is widely seen as a dream get as Ellen’s replacement is reportedly being heavily courted.

Emma Stone talked about having her Oscar be presented to her by Leonardo DiCaprio. “I’d seen Titanic 7-1/2 times in theatres. He was the love of my life. I had a picture of him in my bedroom that was signed that I’d gotten for my birthday when I was 12 years old. And I was WALKING TO LEO.”

Adam Sandler went viral for joining pick-up basketball game.

Lena Waithe says Aziz Ansari decided not to be the focus of Master of None Season 3 “long before” his sexual misconduct controversy.

Nicole Kidman and Melissa McCarthy‘s new show, Nine Perfect Strangers, just got an August premiere date and a new trailer.

Mischa Barton talked about her time on The OC — and it didn’t sound great. “It started pretty early on because it had a lot to do with them adding Rachel (Bilson) in last minute as, after the first season, a series regular and evening out everybody’s pay—and sort of general bullying from some of the men on set that kind of felt really sh*tty.” She also talked about her decision to leave the show: “It just felt like it was the best thing for me and my health and just in terms of not really feeling protected by my cast and crew at that point.” So I guess that rules her out as being a future guest on Bilson’s podcast about the series…

Kumail Nanjiani is set to star in a Hulu limited series about the founder of Chippendales.

A Quiet Place Part II is getting really good reviews and I wish the theatres were open/safe here.

St. Vincent and Carrie Brownstein put their friendship to the test in the trailer for The Nowhere Inn.

Celebs Sing, We Cringe

Gal Gadot got a bunch of celebrities to join her to sing “Imagine” — and the response was probably not what they all were expecting. As many, many people have pointed out, a better use of these celebs’ time would have been to donate (or encourage donations) for medical supplies or food banks or the scores of people who are being laid off these days.

-Speaking of donating medical supplies, TV doctor dramas The Resident, Grey’s Anatomy, Station 19 and The Good Doctor are donating the masks and gowns from their props departments to real hospitals for use.

Kumail Nanjiani and wife Emily Gordon are also doing something useful: they’re starting a podcast to raise money for various charities that help those affected by this quarantine.

Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas look all loved up while on a quick coffee run in LA. I can’t imagine adding a quarantine to a new relationship, but so far they seem to be staying strong.

Liam Gallagher is pushing Noel to join him for a Oasis reunion charity gig. Is it possible it took the world being on fire for these two to reunite?

-It’s been a weird day for Lost alums. Evangeline Lilly posted on Instagram that she won’t self-quarantine, saying “Just dropped my kids off at gymnastics camp. They all washed their hands before going in. They are playing and laughing. #businessasusual”. When people called her out in the comments, she replied “Some people value their lives over freedom, some people value freedom over their lives. We all make our choices…Where we are right now feels a lot too close to Marshall Law [sic] for my comfort already, all in the name of a respiratory flu.” She also implied it was all a big conspiracy, saying “There’s ‘something’ every election year.” Meanwhile, her father — who has stage 4 cancer — is living with her. 😬

-Meanwhile, her former Lost costar Daniel Dae Kim has tested positive for coronavirus — and used his announcement to call out discrimination: “Yes, I’m Asian, and yes I have coronavirus, but I did not get it from China. I got it in America. In New York City. And despite what some political leaders want to call it, I don’t consider the place where it’s from as important as the people who are sick and dying.”

Jimmy Fallon is shooting his show at home and couldn’t get through last night’s monologue because his children were crawling all over him.

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost shot a Shaun of the Dead-themed coronavirus PSA.

-Pose star Angelica Ross posted a cute photo of herself and her new boyfriend on Twitter. But then someone who knows him pointed out that he seems to be living a double life. She later tweeted, “The internet is AMAZING. I’ve been talking to the mother of his son and fiancé all morning. #PlotTwist!”

-Last night’s Survivor was insane. Actually insane. I can’t believe I’m not only watching this show again, but loving it this hard.

Never Have I Ever, a new Netflix comedy from Mindy Kaling, just got a trailer.

Kumail Nanjiani Shows Off His New Look

kumil nanjiani mens health

-Now that Kumail Nanjiani has a superhero body, he’s putting it to good use in the pages of Men’s Health.  In the new issue’s photo spread, he recreates scenes from Top Gun, Wolverine, Die Hard and American Psycho.

Britney Spears reportedly “doesn’t want to work” out of resentment for her father and the rules of her conservatorship. I don’t blame her; if she creates new music, he’ll profit from it and she’ll still be stuck getting a monthly allowance.

Kate Beckinsale shared a terrible story about how Harvey Weinstein reacted days after she showed up to the Serendipity premiere (which took place shortly after 9/11), in a white suit. “He started screaming ‘you stupid fucking C*NT, you C*NT you ruined my premiere.’ I had no idea what he was talking about and started to shake. He said, ‘If I am throwing a red carpet you get in a tight dress, you shake your ass you shake your tits you do not go down it looking like a fucking lesbian you stupid fucking c*nt.’ I tried to say ‘Harvey, the city is on fire, people are still looking for their relatives none of us even felt the premiere was appropriate much less coming out dressed like it’s a bachelor party.’’ He said, ‘I don’t care – it’s my f–king premiere and if I want p*ssy on the red carpet that’s what I get.'”

-I’m not necessarily saying this was racist, but man Florence Pugh should have worded this differently.

Justin Timberlake and SZA were on Ellen’s show and SZA was asked about her Rolling Stone cover and JT kept talking over her. Because of course he did.

-Now there’s photos of Ben Affleck and Ana de Arma kissing on a beach in Cuba so I guess we have to accept that this is happening. Aren’t we already going through enough, universe?!?

Omid Scobie at Harper’s Bazaar offered a behind-the-scenes look at what went down on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s last day in London, and it’s pretty heartbreaking.

-I haven’t caught up on the new season of Schitt’s Creek yet but I was spoiled on the latest relationship development, and this behind-the-scenes footage of them shooting that scene broke me.

-Meanwhile, CBC announced they’ll air a one-hour special after the series finale on April 7.

Tom Hanks‘ sons Colin and Chet both shared updates on how their parents are doing following their Coronavirus diagnosis. Meanwhile, the staff at his hospital gave Hanks a Wilson volleyball to keep him company.

-Speaking of virus fallout, the Juno Awards, the Canadian Screen Awards and the Tribeca Film Festival have been postponed, production on Riverdale has shut down in Vancouver after a crew member came into contact with a patient, A Quiet Place 2 — which was scheduled to hit theatres next weekend — is delayed until further notice, Disney is postponing Mulan, and the release of Fast & Furious 9 was pushed back an entire year.

-Meanwhile, it feels wildly irresponsible of Kristen Bell to share this post. Maybe she was just trying to stop the panic but it implies older and/or immune-compromised people don’t matter. This thing is bad (maybe worse than we thought) and healthy people need to do their part to protect those who are vulnerable so our hospitals don’t get overloaded like in Italy. (I really liked this article: “Young and Unafraid? Good For You. Now Stop Killing People“)

-Bless Ronan Farrow for breaking through today’s deluge of bad news to share this video of Sandra Oh and Dan Levy introducing themselves to Joni Mitchell at the VF Oscars party.

Niall Horan very excited for his week-long Late Late Show residency — and he wants James Corden to know it.

Coldplay released a moody new video featuring animals doing human things.

-The trailer for Disney’s Soul, starring the voices of Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey and John Ratzenberger, is here.
