Kim Kardashian Defends Move Into Law

Kim Kardashian covers Vogue Arabia

Kim Kardashian covers Vogue Arabia, in which she pushes back on the criticism she’s received for pursuing a law degree.  (“There is a misconception that I don’t actually have to study and that I’ve bought my way into getting a law degree – that’s absolutely not true. Being underestimated and over-delivering is my vibe.”)

-If you missed last night’s VMAs, here’s a red carpet recap. And the performance you have to check out is Normani’s Motivation. Twitter LIT UP when she was on. She’s gonna be huge.

-I love that Missy Elliott brought out Alyson Stoner (the little girl from the “Work It” video) to recreate her dance routine last night.

January Jones commenting about fellow Mad Men alum Alison Brie’s boobs at the VMAs is a good time.

Justin Theroux went wakeboarding with his The Leftovers costar Ann Dowd and I’m living for it.

-A Bachelor in Paradise contestant didn’t get the memo that the food at their date was just a prop for show only. He still attempted to choke it down, despite his companion’s repeated warnings. “When we get back to the beach and I tell everyone you ate the date food, they’re gonna give you shit. You’re not supposed to eat the date food! I’m trying to help you.”

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian ate at a Cheesecake Factory two nights in a row and I’ve never related to them more.

-SNL has lost Leslie Jones, which sucks.

-Everyone was making fun of this headline about Eva Longoria directing a Flamin’ Hot Cheetos movie, but the film is actually the story of Richard Montañez, a janitor working for Frito Lay who revitalized the company by inventing the new flavour.

-The owner of Taylor Swift‘s real-life “Cornelia Street” apartment had no idea who she was when he rented it to her. “She walked in, and I’ll never forget this — she said, ‘Oooh, it’s so crafty.’ And in Taylor-speak, that means ‘I like everything.’ She asked if she could rent not just the house but my style as well. So towels and dishes and glassware and furniture and just kind of ‘Take your clothes and go.’ So I did. She was an absolute delight to deal with.”

-In his new Netflix special, Dave Chappelle calls Michael Jackson rape accusers liars, defends Louis C.K. and Kevin Hart, and ridicules trans people. Gross.

Francis Capra (who plays Weevil on Veronica Mars) retweeted this sexist shit and I just can’t.

-On the other end of the spectrum we have Harry Styles, who embraces his female fandom instead of ridiculing it. He says in his new Rolling Stone cover story: “They’re the most honest — especially if you’re talking about teenage girls, but older as well. They have that bullsh-t detector. You want honest people as your audience. We’re so past that dumb outdated narrative of ‘Oh, these people are girls, so they don’t know what they’re talking about.’ They’re the ones who know what they’re talking about. They’re the people who listen obsessively. They f-cking own this sh-t. They’re running it.”

-This fall books preview reminded me that Rainbow Rowell has a sequel to Carry On coming out next month and I cannot wait!

-I am very interested in the new Briarpatch series, mostly because it stars Rosario Dawson and was created by one of my favourite TV critics. The trailer has me hopeful.

-Speaking of shows produced by Sam Esmail, here’s the trailer for Mr Robot’s final season.

-The new trailer for Dickinson, the upcoming Apple+ show in which Hailee Steinfeld plays poet Emily Dickinson, is very confusing. Is she…twerking??

Timothée Chalamet is a reluctant ruler in the trailer for period piece The King, accompanied by Robert Pattinson in an equally regrettable wig.

Tom Holland’s Got Moves

Tom Holland does ballet? What can’t this kid do?

Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello stepped out for a very paparazzi-friendly brunch this weekend. Hmmm. (They were also spotted away from the paps enjoying a late-night snuggle, so either they’re legit or they’re very committed to selling it.)

Sarah Jessica Parker says she once reported the inappropriate behavior of a male costar (a “very big movie star”) to her agent. Luckily, her agent didn’t ignore her. “Within hours everything had changed. He said to them, ‘If this continues, I have sent her a ticket, a one-way ticket out of this city and she will not be returning.'”

-This is an interesting look at why stars have no interest in hosting award shows anymore.

-I love that Princess Diana‘s sisters, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes, were a big part of Archie’s christening.

-A co-star alleged actor Kip Pardue, who plays one of the dads in Marvel’s Runaways, masturbated without consent in front of her. SAG imposed a $6,000 fine, did not release the information to the industry and gave him the option of reducing the fine by 50% if he takes an online training course.

Wendy Williams returned to her talk show and denied romantic involvement with 27-year-old Marc Tomblin, who she was photographed in June. She also talked about her recent “plant-based lunch” with Kanye West, Kim Kardashian, and Kris Jenner, and apologized for bailing on a dinner with Dr. Oz.

-Radiohead’s Thom Yorke stans Billie Eilish. He’s no fan of Sam Smith or Muse, tho.

Ryan Reynolds is joining Dwayne Johnson and Gal Gadot in Red Notice, an art heist movie which is moving from Universal to Netflix.  It’ll be Neflix’s most expensive movie to date.

-I really enjoyed the new season of Stranger Things — but I don’t believe for a second that that ending will stick.

-Also, Robin is an great new addition to the show. Ethan Hawke (the actress’ dad) is so proud on Instagram.

-Jaden Smith launched a pop up vegan food truck to serve the homeless.

Terry Crews is campaigning hard to play King Triton in the Little Mermaid live action adaptation, and I don’t hate it.

-A writer revealed that in 2002 she wrote a profile of Jeffrey Epstein for Vanity Fair that included a mother and her two daughters talking about his inappropriate interest in underage girls, but Graydon Carter cut that from the story. This guy had a ton of people in high places protecting him. Now that he’s locked up, everyone’s wondering if there’s going to be any blowback on his famous friends, who include Trump, Kevin Spacey, Bill Clinton, Chris Tucker and Prince Andrew. The fallout from this one might be huge.

Renee Zellweger channels Judy Garland in the first full trailer for Judy, which feels less like a movie and more like a “for your consideration” reel.

Angelina Jolie is back to being a baddie in the Maleficent 2 trailer.

Who’s On Team Taylor?

-The Taylor Swift drama kicked into high gear over the long weekend. Swift has never owned her masters and her old music label just sold them to Justin Bieber‘s manager Scooter Braun, much to Swift’s chagrin. Now you’d think Swift would come off completely sympathetic here, since labels controlling artists’ original recordings is a ridiculous predatory relic of the music industry (remember when Prince wrote “slave” on his face and changed his name to a symbol? Or when Paul McCartney lost the rights to The Beatles’ catalog to Michael Jackson?). But Swift muddied the waters with her rebuttal by 1) saying she didn’t know about the sale (which seems unlikely, since her dad is on the label’s board and the head of the label says he texted her the night before the story broke), 2) bringing up all the Kanye West past drama and 3) using Tumblr, of all platforms, to make a statement. I get that a lot of her fans are still on it but this should have been positioned as a business story, not a fandom rallying cry. And now there’s talk that she’s liking anti-Bieber posts that have nothing to do with music rights. Remember when Swift used to be the best at controlling the message? Nowadays, even when she’s in the right (and she’s CLEARLY in the right on the masters issue) it’s not always easy to root for her. The fact that people are actually defending archaic music industry practices over her is a pretty stark sign of how far she’s fallen.

-Celebs are taking sides, with Justin Bieber, Demi Lovato and Sia defending Braun, and Halsey, Camila Cabello, Iggy Izalea, Cara Delevingne, Haim, and Brandon Urie on Team Swift.

Miley Cyrus just dropped a NSFW music video filled with messages like “feminist AF,” “virginity is a social construct,” and “my body my rules.”

-“Old Town Road” rapper Lil Nas X came out as gay over the weekend with his latest song, tweeting: “Deadass thought i made it obvious.”

Joshua Jackson was spotted looking cozy this weekend with Jodie Turner-Smith (who he also posted a sweet IG story with). But I thought he was spotted kissing another girl in a parking garage a couple of weeks ago?

Lindsay Lohan celebrated turning 33 by getting naked on Instagram. As you do.

-Wow. Kim Kardashian actually agreed to change her shapewear line’s name.

Dan Levy‘s goodbye post to Schitt’s Creek is so soft.

-It looks like James Franco might be getting pulled into the Amber Heard/Johnny Depp saga.

-I never thought I’d push for Harry Styles to play Elvis, but I’ll take him over Ansel Elgort or Miles Teller.

Louis Tomlinson wasn’t thrilled about that fanfiction scene in HBO’s Euphoria, in which a character read her fanfic about him and Harry Styles relieving stage-fright tensions through oral sex (which was accompanied by an animated depiction). He responded to fan’s tweets about it “I can categorically say that I was not contacted nor did I approve it.”

-It also seems like someone at HBO pretended to be a teen to infiltrate the fanfic community, which is gross.

Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston keep teasing a new project, which is presumably the Breaking Bad movie.

-It’s amazing how charming Jake Gyllenhaal can be when he wants to be. (Full video is here.)

-This is a great profile on Linda Cardellini, who just keeps steadily, quietly doing good work.

-Enlisted is now streaming on Crackle. I wish it was Netflix, but it’s a start!

-The reviews for the new season of Stranger Things are very strong (though I’m a little concerned that there seems to be critical rumblings that Hopper has turned into a jerk).

-Here’s the first trailer Mindy Kaling’s adaptation of Four Weddings and a Funeral. It looks charming. I am charmed.

-There are so many articles lately about the summer box office meltdown. But Late Night and Booksmart should never have been summer releases, and Men In Black and Dark Phoenix were obviously re-written messes. This doesn’t seem confusing.

-Sadness: Sleater-Kinney drummer Janet Weiss has announced she’s leaving the band.

-A new Aziz Ansari stand-up special directed by Spike Jonze is coming to Netflix this month. Anyone wanna bet that he doesn’t even reference why he went away?

-Cult favorite TV show Wynonna Earp is back on track for a summer 2020 return after the studio’s funding woes nearly derailed the Syfy drama.

-I like this Big Little Lies theory.

-The trailer for Rian Johnson‘s murder mystery Knives Out has dropped, featuring a stacked cast that includes Chris Evans, Daniel Craig, Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette, Michael Shannon and LaKeith Stanfield.
