Joss Whedon Just Can’t Help Himself

-I’m bummed that New York magazine gave a full profile feature to Joss Whedon. Did he really need this big of a platform? Again? Luckily, it doesn’t come off as a redemption piece, but only because the man can’t stop playing the victim. Every answer he gives is pretty much a disaster. He talks about having affairs with actresses on the Buffy set: (“‘I feel fucking terrible about them,’ he said. When I pressed him on why, he noted ‘it messes up the power dynamic,’ but he didn’t expand on that thought. Instead, he quickly added that he had felt he ‘had’ to sleep with them, that he was ‘powerless’ to resist. I laughed. ‘I’m not actually joking,’ he said. He had been surrounded by beautiful young women — the sort of women who had ignored him when he was younger — and he feared if he didn’t have sex with them, he would ‘always regret it'”), he blames the Justice League reshoot issues on the cast’s behaviour, saying Gal Gadot simply didn’t understand his jokes (“English is not her first language, and I tend to be annoyingly flowery in my speech”) and casts doubts on Ray Fisher‘s motives for speaking out (“We’re talking about a malevolent force. We’re talking about a bad actor in both senses”). The piece actually ends with him saying, “I think I’m one of the nicer showrunners that’s ever been.” Oh, and he alludes to possibly being responsible for another kid’s death when he was five. An absolute and total catastrophe of an interview.

–Ray Fisher has responded to Whedon‘s new comments against him through Twitter: “Rather than address all of the lies and buffoonery today — I will be celebrating the legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Tomorrow the work continues.”

–Prince Harry says he won’t visit the UK until he can pay for police protection. He’s tried hiring private security but UK intelligence won’t share with them the credible threats. And to make matters worse, the timing of the story is gross.

–Tiffany Haddish was arrested in Georgia on suspicion of DUI.

–Britney Spears seems to be open to the idea of making amends with her younger sister, Jamie Lynn. “I admire you for being strong … just know I love you and I think you know that already more than anything!!!”

–Kanye West doesn’t want his and Kim Kardashian’s four children to have TikTok accounts. Which…sounds reasonable.

-Meanwhile, Kanye West went on Instagram Live to complain that he wasn’t invited to daughter Chicago’s birthday party — but Kim Kardashian was reportedly shocked he said that. He was later pictured at the party.

-Euphoria’s Hunter Schafer and Dominic Fike (who plays new character Elliot) might be dating.

-Oh no. Bryce Dallas Howard is the latest celeb to start promoting NFTs.

–Kendall Jenner insists she asked her friend’s permission before she showed up to her wedding in that barely there dress.

–Jeff Goldblum and Kyle MacLachlan walked in Prada’s menswear show at Milan Fashion Week.

-Is Chloe Sevigny shooting her shot with Jason Momoa via Instagram?

-God, what a stellar week of TV. First up was the Station Eleven finale, which left me crying happy tears. For a pandemic show based on a somewhat bleak book, those last 10 minutes were the most uplifting thing I’ve seen in ages.

-The other big finale everyone’s talking about is Yellowjackets. I love that the showrunners aren’t afraid to shoot down fan theories. Meanwhile, there’s been some great writing about this show, including this piece on how it embraces its gen x roots, this revealing interview with the showrunners, as well as the various excellent weekly recaps.

-Speaking of Yellowjackets, this is a great interview with Christina Ricci, who is stealing the spotlight every week amid a whole show full of scene stealers. She talks about moving to New York when she was a teen and choosing her apartment because it was in her favourite book (“I lived in the Police Building in Little Italy. We moved into that building because I was obsessed with The Alienist”) and how people treat her worse on the Yellowjackets set as soon as she’s dressed as Misty (“I was just, like ‘Oh, this is so interesting, that just because I’m wearing this wig and glasses they’ve forgotten I’m No. 3 on the call sheet'”).

-In other Yellowjackets cast interviews, Melanie Lynskey says her three leading co-stars supported her when she was body-shamed on set by a producer.

-I liked this piece about how we’re finally moving away from mystery-box TV.

-Scream had a really strong opening weekend at the box office.

-People can’t get enough of Peacemaker’s opening credits dance sequence. John Cena and Jennifer Holland talked about nailing the “stoic” moves.

-Game of Thrones’ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau fights the elements in the Against the Ice trailer.

 

Chris Evans Laughs Off Dick Pic

–Chris Evans recovered from his accidental dick pic reveal nicely by using the attention for good and urging people to vote.  He also addressed it in an interview with Tamron Hall today, saying “That’s called turning a frown upside down, Tamron. It was an interesting weekend. Full of lessons learned. A lot of teachable moments. Things happen and it’s embarrassing. You have to roll with the punches. I will say I have some pretty fantastic fans that came to my support.” I still think there’s a conversation to be had about whether a female celeb could survive an incident like this as unscathed as he did, but still, I’m glad he’s dealing with it with grace.

–Cardi B is taking her “WAP” and walking away. She filed for divorce from husband Offset at a courthouse in Atlanta.

–Madonna is set to co-write and direct her own biopic. Diablo Cody will co-write the script. (Interesting that her tweet about it downplays Cody’s involvement.)

-The family of Carole Baskin’s missing husband’s aired a commercial during her Dancing With the Stars debut last night: “Do you know who did this or if Carole Baskin was involved? A $100k reward has been funded.”

–Kim Kardashian West is going to to freeze her Instagram/Facebook accounts tomorrow to protest hate speech, which is probably going to have more impact than anything the platforms are doing.

–Jared Padalecki‘s real-life wife has been cast to play his TV wife in CW’s Walker. I can see this happening more and more during covid. You don’t have to take the same safety precautions when shooting if the actors are living together.

–John Boyega is stepping down as a brand ambassador for the British perfume and candle company Jo Malone after the brand reshot a video he created with a different actor for the Chinese market.

-Certified young person Paul Rudd wants you to wear a mask.

–Noel Gallagher says he refuses to wear a mask because of freedom or some nonsense.

–Emily Ratajkowski wrote a powerful essay for The Cut on controlling photos of herself. She tweeted, “This is an extremely personal piece about image, power and consent.”

–Jason Momoa continues to stand by Ray Fisher and his claims about misconduct on the set of Justice League, saying on Instagram: “This shit has to stop and needs to be looked at…Serious stuff went down. It needs to be investigated and people need to be held accountable.”

-In a new interview, Kendall Jenner said “I am a stoner, no one knows that, so that’s the first time I’ve ever really said anything out there.” Groundbreaking stuff.

-Succession’s Sarah Snook has been cast in an adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion. That is my second fave Austen and there hasn’t really been an adaptation I’ve likes, so I need this to be good!

-This is the best tweet I’ve seen about the JK Rowling mess: “JK Rowling is really out here policing gender identity when she literally identifies as a man to sell more books.?!!!!!!?!)!!”

–Jude Law is having a big week. His HBO show debuted last night, and he revealed that he’s welcomed baby no. 6.

-Screening Tenet might have actually harmed movie theatres in the long run, as they have a stronger hand when negotiating rent if they remained closed.

–Jerry Harris, the breakout star of Netflix’s docuseries Cheer, is reportedly under FBI investigation for the soliciting sex with minors. God, 2020 won’t let up.

-HBO Max has handed out a straight-to-series order for a pirate comedy from executive producer Taika Waititi called Our Flag Means Death.

-Here’s a new trailer for The Mandalorian’s new season.

-Monsters have taken over the surface of the Earth but Dylan O’Brien is ready to travel above ground to find his girlfriend in the first trailer for Love and Monsters. This looks like dumb fun which is exactly what I’m looking for these days.

–Kendall Jenner offers a look inside her Los Angeles home in the September issue of Architectural Digest. I’m surprised by how much I like this.

–Meghan Markle has agreed to pay more than £67,000 in legal costs after losing the first round of her legal battle against the Mail.

–Armie Hammer is tweeting again. Not surprisingly, it’s not going well.

-Man, I’m really digging Seth Rogen these days. His new movie that’s dropping on HBO Max/Crave next week looks great, he’s repeated slammed people who comment AllLivesMatter on his posts, and in Marc Maron‘s podcast, he said when he was younger he wasn’t told Palestinians lived on land that became Israel. “I also think that as a Jewish person, like I was fed a huge amount of lies about Israel my entire life. You know, they never tell you, that oh by the way, there were people there. They make it seem like it was– just sitting there. Oh the fucking door’s open! … Literally they forget to include the fact to every young Jewish person: Basically, oh by the way, there were people living there.”

–Megan Thee Stallion showed off the flowers she got from Beyonce and Rihanna following her shooting.

-Meanwhile, Vulture’s piece on the reaction to what happened to her is well worth your time. “Try to recall another time when a rapper went into surgery for multiple gunshot wounds and it became instant gag fodder.”

–Taylor Swift stans continue to go after the Pitchfork reviewer. This is insane. Not that ANY review would justify this kind of reaction, but she liked the album! She gave it 8/10!

-Speaking of disturbing fan behaviour, Kate Beckinsale used IG stories to document getting an “unsettling” gift — someone anonymously dropped off a rabbit in a cage along with a basket of rose petals on her front door.

–Post Malone appeared on Joe Rogan’s show (ugh) and talked about masks. The singer, whose lifestyle brand donated 40,000 N95 masks to frontline medical workers, doesn’t think masks should be mandatory. “It’s like me in school having to tuck in my shirt or else you get detention. It’s weird to be forced to wear something … At the end of the day, it all comes down to respect for other people. It’s not a government thing. You shouldn’t be forced to wear a mask — but you should. And that’s because I respect you as a follow human.”

–Marti Noxon and Kater Gordon, who previously called out Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner for harassment, wrote a column about how the industry can better protect staff from toxic showrunners in light of the news that Weiner has a new development deal with FX.

–Cameron Diaz chatted with Seth Meyers about quarantining with her husband, Benji Madden, and their 7-month-old daughter, Raddix. She was doing promo for her new wine line — which might have gone better had she not poured herself a glass over ice.

-The Emmy Awards have confirmed the ceremony will be completely virtual in a message to nominees, in which they note: “If you want to be in formal wear, we’d love that, but equally if you’re in the UK and it’s 3am, perhaps you want to be in designer pajamas and record from your bed!” Aw man, this is going to be so weird.

–Yahya Abdul-Mateen II‘s reaction to getting an Emmy nomination for his role in Watchmen is so pure.

-But no one — I mean no one — does an Emmy reaction better than Glow’s Betty Gilpin. This year’s statement might be her best yet: “To the Television Academy — how dare you. I really can’t stress enough how much of a threat this nomination is to my current quarantine brand of pasta and sad. In the Time Before, being born with a healthy protective emotional wall missing meant I got to channel that into pretend time in exchange for health insurance and claps. Until today, apparently here in the apocalypse, these skills were about as meaningful as a worm’s hymn in a canyon. I’d like to thank the cast and crew, and the Academy, and seasonal depression, and honestly Nathan Lane, and before this nomination phoenixes me out of mediocrity and I explode into ribbons just real quick the cops who killed Breonna Taylor still have not been arrested.”

–Kieran Culkin saying he’ll punch Succession costar Nicholas Braun ‘in the balls‘ if he beats him is also a pretty great reaction.

-Meanwhile, Nicholas Braun released a pandemic track called ‘Antibodies’ to encourage people to donate to Partners in Health and The COPE Program, two organizations working to help those most vulnerable and affected by coronavirus. The song is both hilarious and incredibly catchy. Go, Cousin Greg!!

–Tracy Morgan and his wife, Megan Wollover, are splitting after five years of marriage.

–Annie Lennox called out Madonna for posting some BS covid conspiracy theories on her Instagram.

-The first photos from Netflix’s Ratched, Ryan Murphy‘s prequel to One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest starring Sarah Paulson, looks predictably kooky. Is that Sharon Stone with a … monkey?

-Rapper Malik B, a founding member of The Roots, has died at 47.

-Netflix announced it will be adding seven classic Black sitcoms to its library in an initiative lead by @StrongBlackLead. The shows are: Moesha, The Game, Sister Sister, Girlfriends, The Parkers, Half & Half, and One on One. I’m definitely due for a Girlfriends binge, but so far this looks like it’s US-only.

–Dua Lipa confirmed that a side b of Future Nostalgia is coming.

–Ashley Judd won her appeal, allowing her to go forward with her sexual harassment claim against Harvey Weinstein.

–Lili Reinhart tries to recover from an accident in the Chemical Hearts trailer, which will debut on Amazon Prime.
