James Gunn Keeps Talking about Martin Scorsese

–James Gunn is walking back his comments about Martin Scorsese. Film Twitter remains exhausting.

-As someone whose water was cut off today because of main repairs in my ‘hood, I’m desperate for a shower. It’s making me even more confused by all these celebrities proclaiming they don’t need them. The latest is Jake Gyllenhaal: “More and more I find bathing to be less necessary, at times…But I do also think that there’s a whole world of not bathing that is also really helpful for skin maintenance, and we naturally clean ourselves.” Stars know they don’t actually have to disclose everything, right?!?

–Kim Kardashian and all 4 kids came out to support Kanye West during his Donda listening party. Meanwhile, attendees were offered the Pfizer vaccine.

-According to those at the listening party, the new album has lots of references to the end of his marriage.

–Joel Kinnaman was probably planning to celebrate the glowing reviews of The Suicide Squad, but instead the actor has filed a restraining order against his ex-hook up, model Bella Davis, who he alleges is trying to extort him by threatening to tell the media they had non-consensual sex. He claims he recorded a phone conversation in which she admits to lying.

-This is an interesting thought experiment. The days of TV shows getting renewed for 10+ seasons are certainly behind us, so what current broadcast show will be the LAST to ever hit that milestone?

–Brendan Hunt (who plays Coach Beard) says the first three episodes of this season’s Ted Lasso were meant to be watched together.

–Dave Grohl & The Foo Fighters trolled the Westboro Baptist Church protesters in Kansas by performing disco on the back of a truck.

-Is Britney Spears‘ dad trying to get her under another psychiatric hold? In new court documents, Jamie alleges that her current conservator Jodi Montgomery called him last month to say that she is concerned about his daughter’s behavior and mental health and believes she might need to be placed under a 5150 psychiatric hold. In response, her attorney told Variety: “Ms. Montgomery does have concerns about Ms. Spears’ recent behavior and overall mental health… Due to medical privacy, Ms. Montgomery cannot go into those concerns with any further detail except to say that having her father Jamie Spears continuing to serve as her Conservator instead of a neutral professional fiduciary is having a serious impact on Ms. Spears’ mental health.” The statement added, “Ms. Montgomery implores Mr. Spears to stop the attacks. It does no good; it only does harm. We all need to focus on one thing, and one thing only — the health, well-being and best interests of Britney Spears.”

-Meanwhile, Britney is very excited about her new iPad.

–Jennifer Aniston has defended her comments about removing anti-vaxxers from her weekly routine, saying it’s driven by a desire to protect other unvaccinated people. “We have to care about more than just ourselves.”

–Luis Guzmán will play Gomez Addams in the Wednesday series at Netflix, which is pretty fantastic casting.

–Kathy Griffin is home from the hospital after having half of her lung removed in her battle with cancer.

-Oh god. Multiple women sued The Price Is Right during Mike Richards’ tenure as executive producer, and their stories paint an unsavory picture of Alex Trebek’s presumptive successor.

–Diane Keaton posted a tribute to “good men” she’s worked with — and inexplicably included Mel Gibson. Oh honey, no.

-Italian fashion brand Liu Jo filed a lawsuit against Kendall Jenner, alleging she bailed on a million-dollar photoshoot last year.

–Sandra Oh‘s new Netflix show The Chair is getting good reviews. She plays an English professor whose promotion becomes a kind of curse.

-Hollywood continues to cling to IP that feels way past its prime. Yesterday was the South Park megadeal, and now comes news that the Hunger Games prequel is going ahead.

–Elle Fanning chooses choking on chicken over sex in the season two trailer for The Great, which also features a brief glimpse of Gillian Anderson.

-Here’s the first trailer for Hulu’s Dopesick series, which follows how one company triggered the worst drug epidemic in American history by hooking millions on opioids. It stars Michael Keaton, Kaitlyn Dever, Rosario Dawson and Peter Sarsgaard.

 

Kate Winslet On This Year’s Uncertain Awards Season

–Kate Winslet, back in the awards race with same-sex romance Ammonite, covers THR and talks about choreographing her own sex scenes with Saoirse Ronan (“[Director] Francis [Lee] was naturally very nervous. And I just said to him, ‘Listen, let us work it out.’ And we did. ‘We’ll start here. We’ll do this with the kissing, boobs, you go down there, then you do this, then you climb up here.’ I mean, we marked out the beats of the scene so that we were anchored in something that just supported the narrative. I felt the proudest I’ve ever felt doing a love scene on Ammonite. And I felt by far the least self-conscious”) and attending this year’s TIFF (“I can be barefoot and I don’t have to put a dress on. It’s awesome”).

–Justin and Hailey Bieber appear to have missed the memo on L.A.’s no parties order.

–Brad Pitt is reportedly dating Nicole Poturalski, a German model. They were spotted together in France. There’s lots of chatter about how she looks like Angelina Jolie, but looking at her Instagram I’m not sure I see it.

–Britney Spears’ sister just made a move to control the pop star’s assets. Jamie Lynn Spears, who was selected as trustee of the pop superstar’s estate two years ago, is seeking more control over the performer’s fortune. Meanwhile, Spears’ father submitted additional documentation to continue the conservatorship, including checking a box that indicates the singer is unable handle her finances.

-My goodness. More powerful Hollywood men have been named as having been involved with the actress Charlotte Kirk.

–Thandie Newton said she was “surprised by the appreciation” she got after speaking candidly about what it’s like working with Tom Cruise. “I have nothing to lose because I could just then not get hired, which is kind of normal for people in my generation anyway. So I’ve got nothing to lose and I would rather go out using this moment.”

–Gabrielle Union and Kirsten Dunst reunited virtually with director Peyton Reed and writer Jessica Bendinger to celebrate the 20 year anniversary of Bring It On.

–Louis C.K. donated to Joe Biden’s campaign; Biden gave it back.

–Halle Berry has dropped her lawyer and is now representing herself in her divorce proceedings with Olivier Martinez. This seems…misguided.

-Alias costar Kevin Weisman posted some very cute old photos of the cast have a pre-awards show party in 2002.

-It’s really interesting to see how US-based movie publications are handling film reviews these days. Collider just posted: “To publish reviews without any awareness of the current landscape can be seen as an implicit endorsement of attending the theater. That would be putting our readership’s health in jeopardy, and we don’t want to do that.”

-Meanwhile, Variety interviewed Christopher Nolan stans who are taking flights just to see Tenet.

-I really like this idea of using empty major league baseball fields to screen movies, but Warner Bros and or Nolan won’t even let Tenet screen at drive-ins in cities where theatres are still closed, so good luck with that.

-If you want to see the Dune trailer, you actually have to go to the movies. It’s currently only showing in front of Tenet, but isn’t expected to premiere online until Sept 9. Seriously, what is Warner Bros doing?!?

-Good news for One Day at a Time fans. The series, which was picked up by Pop after being cancelled on Netflix, will now also air on CBS.

-Altered Carbon has been canceled by Netflix after — you guessed it! — two seasons. They’re not even pretending their shows will last longer than 2-3 seasons anymore, huh?

-Stranger Things’ kiddo Noah Schnapp denies using the n-word while singing along to a song.

-I caught up on I May Destroy You’s season finale (which aired on HBO on Monday but a few months ago in the UK) and oh my god. If you have HBO or Crave, it’s so worth watching. It’s been a while since a show got me so jazzed that I immediately looked up all the think pieces as soon as it ended. No wonder celebrities like Janelle Monae, Seth Rogen, Adele, and Jane Fonda have been raving about it.

-I also appreciated this piece on I May Destroy You’s similarities with HBO’s other devastating new show about the power of narrative, I’ll Be Gone In the Dark.

-A shy teen makes music with a band of ghosts in the trailer for Netflix’s new musical Julie and the Phantoms.

-Quarantine comedies are the latest thing. HBO’s Coastal Elites features Sarah Paulson, Bette Midler, Kaitlyn Dever, Dan Levy and Issa Rae. Meanwhile, a bunch of familiar faces show up in the trailer for Netflix’s remotely shot anthology series Social Distance.

-Here’s the trailer for Sundance hit The Forty-Year-Old Version. Writer, director and actress Radha Blank won the Vanguard Award for her comedy about a once-promising playwright who turns to hip-hop.

-Well, this is a happy surprise to head into the holidays. Joshua Jackson and Jodie Turner-Smith have not only tied the knot, they are also expecting their first child, according to Us Weekly. I love him so much and she seems equally delightful so yay!

–Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have confirmed that they’ll be spending the holidays here in Canada. Welcome. Please bring snow.

-My god, how did I miss Mariah Carey‘s Billy on the Street episode from a few days ago? It’s perfection!

-It’s my favourite day on Twitter: when everyone submits the best TV line of the year. (I’m not sure anything beats “Kneel,” but “For the sake of your poor ol’ dad, keep the door open three inches,” and NoHoHank’s response to Barry’s “Am I evil?” question: “Oh my God! I mean. Absolutely! Do I not tell you that enough? You are like the most evil guy I know, man!”)

-Speaking of Barry, Henry Winkler says he regularly writes fan letters to celebrities. “I think if you see something and it is so incredible, if you see a performance like Sam Rockwell as Fosse, you have to write a letter. If you see Patricia Arquette in Escape at Dannemor, you have to write a letter.”

–Kim Kardashian is getting called out for blackface thanks to her new fashion photo shoot.

-TVLine named Unbelievable’s Merritt Wever, Kaitlyn Dever and Toni Collette and the performers of the year and I fully support this. Not only were all three great in the Netflix show, Dever had Booksmart, Wever had Marriage Story and Collette had Knives Out.

-This is a good interview with Star Wars’ Kelly Marie Tran and Naomi Ackie, in which they discuss their own privilege, pay equality, and tarot cards.

-If you’re angry about J.K. Rowling, take comfort in knowing the Buffy’s Anthony Stewart Head once went out of his way to spend the day with a trans fan.

-The trailer for the final season of Schitt’s Creek has landed. It have two weeks to catch up before the new season starts.

-The Flash’s Carlos Valdes and Tom Cavanaugh continue their weirdly delightful holiday musical tradition.

–Zach Braff, Charlie Puth, Josh Peck and Christopher Mintz-Plasse joined James Corden for a new boy band classic: Boyz II Menorah.

–Zoë Kravitz stars in the first trailer for Hulu’s High Fidelity. Oh yeah, I’ll be watching this.

-CBS released a new trailer for Star Trek: Picard.

-The best thing about the Cats movie is how savage critics are in their reviews. This collection made me laugh.
