TV Stars Strike a Pose for Vanity Fair

vanity-fair-emmys

-My god, the photos and GIFs in Vanity Fair’s Emmy spread are *scrumptious*! The shoot features Sophie Turner, Bill Hader, Dan Levy, Mandy Moore, Natasha Lyonne, Kieran Culkin, Tony Hale, Jharrel Jerome, Gina Rodriguez, and Regina Hall.

-Variety’s Actors on Actors interviews continue to roll out. In the lateset, Michelle Williams and Patricia Clarkson talk how TV has evolved since Dawsons Creek, Emilia Clarke tells Regina Hall that she had to be sewn into her Game of Thrones costumes, and Don Cheadle asks Sacha Baron Cohen of his stunt interviews with politicians “How do get past their team? How aren’t you vetted properly?”

-Television critics are calling Miley Cryus‘ episode of Black Mirror one of the worst in the franchise’s history, which makes me really, really want to watch it.

-Jezebel published a shitty clickbait article about actors who are bad (with no context for their argument — it’s just a list!). I like this thread disputing some of their most egregious inclusions. I’m not going to fight anyone over Ashton Kutcher or Mark Wahlberg, but Brie Larson? Gwyneth Paltrow? Amy freakin’ Adams??!?

Mindy Kaling pronounces ‘charcuterie’ in a really cute way.

-In a lengthy IG post, Madonna pushed back on that recent that New York Times profile, writing “To say that I was disappointed in the article would be an understatement.” She wrote that she “felt raped” by the experience, adding “And yes I’m allowed to use that analogy having been raped at the age of 19.” (Um, are you though??) I didn’t love the way the profile was handled and the constant mentions of her age were overkill, but I do think that the fact that she’s 60 and trying to stay contemporary is a relevant topic to explore.

-It’s still one year until Wonder Woman 1984 comes out, but since DC isn’t going to ComicCon Patty Jenkins decided to throw us a bone by revealing Diana’s bitchin’ new look.

-The review embargo for Big Little Lies season 2 was just lifted, and the majority of reviews are pretty positive, with almost everyone gushing about Meryl Streep’s performance.

-Speaking of BLL, I just did a Summer TV Preview and man I’ve gotta start watching TV again. There’s so much coming!

Brad Pitt has ordered those ridiculous Straight Pride parade organizers to cease using his name and image.

Halle Berry doesn’t remember much about her Oscar win: “”Very shortly after I got that statue, I became inebriated to the point that the whole night is awash.”

Emma Thompson doesn’t have a lot of time for guys whining about how they don’t know how to act in the age of Me Too: “Get a grip guys, it’s not rocket science. You just behave with respect and courtesy. Now shut up and get on with it.”

-The rumbles of trouble in paradise for Bradley Cooper and Irina Shayk continue to get louder.

Tig Notaro has a new webseries where she interviews celebrities — and she has no idea who they are. The James Vanderbeek one is great.

Michelle Williams, Julianne Moore and Billy Crudup star in the After the Wedding trailer.

Mariah Carey Drops “A No No” Video

-This seems like the perfect way to lead us into the weekend: Mariah Carey turns a subway car into a dance party in her new video for “A No No.”

Lupita Nyong’o says Oprah Winfrey, Alfre Woodard, Sarah Paulson, Brad Pitt, Jared Leto and other celebrities “protected” her when she was getting her start in the industry.

-Yikes. Empire actor Jussie Smollett has just been indicated by a Chicago grand jury on 16 counts of disorderly conduct.

Julianne Moore revealed that she was originally slated to star in Can You Ever Forgive Me? before she was replaced by Melissa McCarthy. “[Director] Nicole [Holofcener] fired me. That’s the truth. I think she didn’t like what I was doing…I haven’t [seen it] yet because it’s still kind of painful. I love Melissa McCarthy. I worship her. I think she’s fantastic, so I’m sure she’s great… It’s pretty bad. The only other time I was fired was when I was working at a yogurt stand when I was 15, so, yeah, it felt bad.”

-First it was yoga, and now Gwyneth Paltrow is now taking credit for the gluten-free craze. That is not something I would ever want to be known for…

On Carpool Karaoke, the Jonas Brothers got hooked up to lie detectors and revealed which brother annoys them the most, and which one broke up the bad.

Meghan Markle discussed feminism on her International Women’s Day panel, saying she wants her unborn child to be a feminist, whatever the sex. “I feel the embryonic kicking of feminism.”

David Beckham‘s International Women’s Day post was pretty sweet.

-This IG post from the band Stars also won the day.

-Captain Marvel is tracking to have a $156M-$160M opening weekend.

-I love that Mark Ruffalo is out here stumping for the movie like a goddamn champ.

-This is a good clarification about why Michael Jackson’s estate is suing HBO for airing the documentary. It has to do with whether or not the singer did what he is accused of. Instead, the lawsuit is more specifically about the violation of a single non-disparagement clause in a 27-year-old contract between Jackson and HBO.

-Meanwhile, The Simpsons has pulled their classic Michael Jackson episode from syndication.

Whoopi Goldberg says the reason she hasn’t been on The View lately is because she almost died from pneumonia.

Kevin Tsujihara, chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. Entertainment, said in a memo: “I deeply regret that I have made mistakes in my personal life that have caused pain and embarrassment to the people I love the most.”

-I really liked this piece on how TV is unwhitewashing history one character, period, and genre at a time.

-After Killing Eve’s first season ended I was adamant that we didn’t need another season. But damn this trailer looks good!

Jesse Eisenberg plays a man who joins a dojo following a random street attack in the SWSW film The Art of Self Defense.

Best and Worst Dressed at the 2019 Golden Globes

The stars came out to honour the best in TV and film at the 76th annual Golden Globe Awards on Sunday. Unlike last year, when most celebs wore black in support of Time’s Up, this year’s red carpet was a sea of colour. White and tulle were the biggest themes, but the dresses we loved most had a bit more edge. Check out our picks for the best and worst looks of the night:

BEST DRESSED AT THE 2019 GOLDEN GLOBES:

Jen: Nicole Kidman looks like liquid sex in this slinky blood red merlot dress by Michael Kors. Nicole and I are fighting over the black hair bow (I hate it, she loves it) but this dress is an undeniable winner.

Nicole: Holy merde, Regina King came to win tonight! She is by far my best dressed in a glowing blush gown by Alberta Ferretti that shines on the carpet. So very beautiful with simple accessories and unfussy hair. The whole look is stunning.

Jen: Crazy Rich Asians star Gemma Chan brings high fashion to the red carpet in this gorg Maison Valentino Couture creation. And are those shorts underneath there?? Marry me.

Nicole: Taraji P Henson in a plunging velvet custom Vera Wang completely makes up for the Giambattista Valli disaster from last year’s Emmys. She looked absolutely amazing in this head to toe sleek look.

Jen: Lupita Nyong’o is radiant in blue sequined Calvin Klein. I love the unique neckline and the way it moves on camera.

Nicole: Fleabag and Killing Eve creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge is gorgeous in a red sequinned custom gown by Galvan London that fits perfectly. She lets the dress do all the work, keeping the rest of her look very simple. This is movie star style and I’m just tickled that she’s there for writing.

Jen: Keri Russell deserves to take home the hardware for her stellar performance on the final season of The Americans, but she already looks like a winner in this Grecian-inspired metallic Monique Lhuillier.

Nicole: I love Octavia Spencer‘s tea-length gown from Cristian Siriano. It’s supremely flattering and a different silhouette than we see elsewhere on the carpet.

Jen: I’m sure it’s going to end up on a bunch of worst lists, but I actually really dig this look on Julia Roberts. Her ethereal Stella McCartney top and crisp black pants make her look cool and relaxed AF.

Nicole: Thandie Newton is pure sexiness in this mirrored Michael Kors gown that shows glimpses of skin and clings to every curve. Like a lot of looks I love tonight, the dress does all the work and the really simple gorgeous hair pulls it all together.

WORST DRESSED AT THE 2019 GOLDEN GLOBES:

Nicole: Oh boy, I wish that Julianne Moore would go back to letting her pal Tom Ford dress her because Givenchy is not working for her. This is an absurd dress that tries to be too many things and ends up looking boxy and dowdy. Boo.

Jen: As soon as we saw Claire Foy’s Miu Miu gown, Nicole said that it reminded her of that scene in The Proposal when Sandra Bullock tries on the wedding dress and her boobs disappear. That about sums this up.

Nicole: What the actual hell, Alison Brie? How on earth did Taraji and Allison’s dresses come out of the same brain? Can I even call Allison’s outfit a gown? It looks like a bikini top under a sheer cover. Hard nope.

Jen: Lady Gaga is out of the shallows and off the deep end in blue Valentino. I get that it’s an homage to Judy Garland but the arms are ridiculous and there’s so much fabric on the train that it looks like she’s dragging curtains behind her.

Nicole: Jen and I actually fought over who got to pick Emily Blunt in Alexander McQueen as our best dressed until we saw the mess at the bottom of the gown. Why oh why couldn’t it be a simple column!? So close.

Jen: I adore Constance Wu and I want so much more for her than this underwhelming Vera Wang. The colour makes it look like support wear, and tulle is nobody’s friend.

Nicole: I’m all for simple tonight but man, Amy Adams is too austere in her teal Calvin Klein. She needs lipstick and a necklace, maybe a bow? Let’s get Tom Ford to dress her from now on, too!

Jen: The Good Place’s D’Arcy Carden is trapped in the bad place with this terrible gown. Puckered seams, unflattering colour, clashing straps. What is this??
