-Squid Game’s Hoyeon Jung is on Vogue’s February cover. She talks of how a lull in her modelling career led her to acting (“Getting farther away from other people’s gaze let me find what I wanted again and gave me time to study it. What’s important in life is not when your career is up, but when your career is down and how you spend that time. That’s something I learned”), the weightloss-inducing stress of becoming absurdly famous in the span of just a few days (“I don’t know why, but I couldn’t eat. I was so confused, and it was so chaotic. I didn’t believe it. I didn’t trust it”) and her future plans (“I have always wanted to go to Hollywood and to act in America, and I still do. But Squid Game changed my mindset. It doesn’t have to be an American movie or a European movie, it’s the story and the message that are more important”).

-In THR’s Actor Roundtable, Nicolas Cage, Peter Dinklage, Andrew Garfield, Jonathan Majors and Simon Rex share their fears about showing vulnerability, their sense of responsibility when wielding guns on sets, and their thoughts on the future of theatres. There’s also a hilarious exchange when Cage talks about filming with a horse called Rain Man that tried to kill him, and Majors says he’s also rode that horse. “I think I may have been older when I got him.” “I just wrapped three weeks ago!”

–Shonda Rhimes is on the latest cover of Time magazine. “I think the girlboss archetype is bullsh-t that men have created to find another way to make women sound bad.”

–Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette talk about returning to the Scream franchise in this new NYT interview. Said Arquette of the new film, “There were moments when I felt Wes’s spirit around a lot. There would be a wind blowing and I’d see Courteney’s hair move back. And then it’s just like” — he made an exaggeratedly mournful weeping noise. “It made it really easy to tap into those feelings.”

-Uncut Gems star Julia Fox and Kanye West actually appear to be a thing.

-A very pregnant Jennifer Lawrence did a round of quick-fire questions with Stephen Colbert.

–Jason Derulo got into a fight with two strangers in Las Vegas allegedly because they mistook him for Usher.

–Steven Soderbergh once again released his annual pop culture diary. I love how there’s prestige TV like Succession and Hacks, but also SO much Below Deck.

–Keanu Reeves continues to live up to our dreams; he reportedly donated 70% of his salary for the original Matrix film to cancer research.

–Jon Stewart has accused author J.K. Rowling of dealing in anti-Semitic tropes in her Harry Potter franchise, specifically the tellers at Gringotts Bank.

–Chris Noth was supposed to appear in a cameo in the finale of And Just Like That — but no more.

–Marisa Tomei did a “simple” makeup routine for Vogue and it is the only one I’ve ever watched that actually is simple.

-Omicron continues to wreak havoc on Hollywood. The Sundance Film Festival is going virtual only, the Palm Springs International Film Festival, the film academy’s annual Governors Awards, and the planned broadcast of the Critics Choice Awards have all been scrapped, and the Grammys are being postponed. Meanwhile, Grey’s Anatomy and a handful of other ABC shows have paused production.

-Two years after the fact, Gal Gadot has admitted that the “Imagine” video might not have been a good idea.

-The internet can’t stop making fun of Matt Damon’s crypto ad, and I’m here for it.

Jake Gyllenhaal’s Softer Side

-I’m loving this week’s trend of dudes wearing pink. First there’s Jake Gyllenhaal on the cover of The Sunday Times Style in a sweater that he joked he borrowed from Jamie Lee Curtis. And today was the premiere for the new Bond film in London and I’m gagging over Daniel Craig‘s amazing raspberry velvet jacket. I also loved Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s jumpsuit, and was impressed by Kate Middleton’s dress (but not the hair).

-It’s cute that some people believe that Tom Cruise and Hayley Atwell had a relationship and now it’s ended. I am surprised that this “news” came out before their movie debuted though.

-The Grey’s Anatomy tell-all book said that a series regular got fired because she posted pics on social media without first getting Ellen Pompeo’s permission. Said the author, “It was this weird thing that [the unnamed actress] was taking pictures behind-the-scenes and was very active with taking pictures of the crew and telling their stories. But Ellen got to the point where it really became Ellen’s set, so you should really check in with mom, just let her know, ‘FYI, doing this, are you OK?’ Kiss the ring. She didn’t do that…and that was her downfall.” (Based on other articles about the book, it seems like the actress was Jerrika Hinton.)

-And now it’s Netflix’s turn for Britney Spears docs. Their documentary about the singer’s legal battle with her father dropped today. Among the revelations: one of the producers was part of a covert operation to try to get Britney a new lawyer in 2009, and Sam Lutfi denied ever drugging Britney.

-Netflix says it’s trying to be more transparent with ratings, but its latest data dump is still frustratingly vague. What we can tell (sort of) is that Bridgerton, Bird Box and Extraction had lots of viewers.

-Also, the CEO says Squid Game is on its way to become Netflix’s most popular show ever.

-I really liked this review of The Eyes of Tammy Faye. As much as I think Jessica Chastain‘s performance should be awarded, but the way the film makes the character so infantile and victimized doesn’t exactly line up with my recollections of the scandal.

-The original iteration of Law & Order was cancelled a decade ago, and now it’s coming back.

-Stellan Skarsgård revealed his thoughts about Martin Scorsese‘s comments on Marvel movies, and he succinctly explained the current state of cinema. “What Martin Scorsese wrote in his article in the NYT was not that it was Marvel’s fault — because it’s not and he knows that — it’s not Netflix’s fault either that the streaming services are taking over so much. The fault is that we have for decades believed that the markets should rule everything and the rich will get richer, and that is the root of it all…They’re not run anymore by people who want to make money specifically out of film because they like film. They’re run by big corporations that want to have 10% back on their invested capital, which means that as long as they sell popcorn, it’s fine. That’s why all the mid-range films, the films that are lower than $100 million dollar budget, and over $3 million dollars, they don’t exist anymore. It’s only $100 million dollar films and $3 million dollars, and nothing in between.”

–Jonathan Majors and Idris Elba face off in the first official trailer for Jay-Z-produced The Harder They Fall, also starring Regina King, Delroy Lindo, LaKeith Stanfield, and Zazie Beetz.

Jennifer Aniston: ‘I’m just a very fortunate and blessed human being’

-The Morning Show promo tour is in full swing, with Jennifer Aniston covering the latest issue of People. “I’m in a really peaceful place. I have a job that I love, I have people in my life who are everything to me, and I have beautiful dogs.”

–Aniston also did an interview with Howard Stern, during which she squashed the rumors of tensions between her and Brad Pitt (“Brad and I are buddies; we’re friends”), and insisted nothing romantic ever happened between her and David Schwimmer (“I would proudly say I banged Schwimmer if that happened. But no”).

-Sources tell People that Britney Spears was “very nervous about speaking in front of the judge” yesterday but insisted on doing it because “this is her life and she wants big changes.” Audio of her testimony was posted on Youtube, and despite stammering a bit and talking really fast, she sounded articulate and in control.

-Meanwhile, despite his immense contribution to how she’s been treated, Justin Timberlake tweeted: “Jess and I send our love, and our absolute support to Britney during this time. We hope the courts, and her family make this right and let her live however she wants to live.” Perez Hilton also tried to get in on the action with some empathetic tweets. Look, as someone who has a messy past with celebrity coverage, I get that we’re all reckoning with our role in all of this. Or we’re supposed to be. But these two seemingly having zero self-awareness, instead pretending they didn’t have a hand in what’s happened to her.

-You thought Gigi Hadid’s pasta cabinets were bad? Cara Delevingne opened the doors of her new LA home and showed off her vagina tunnel, ball pit, hat room, Playboy arcade game, David Bowie shrine and the razor scooter she zips around on so the hard floors don’t hurt her feet. “Hugh Hefner is a big inspiration in this house.” I can’t stop watching this video.

-I love this story about a little boy who was sent to the principal because the kept insisting “Superman is my uncle” — and then his uncle Henry Cavill came to pick him up.

-So it sounds like that Deux Moi blind from a couple of weeks ago might have been onto something– according to THR, John Boyega walked off the set of Netflix’s Rebel Ridge mid-shoot due to issues such as the script and his accommodations. Filmmakers reportedly discovered he left when they went to his hotel and found he had checked out. (His agent denies this and says he left due to family issues.) This is so tough because, if true, it’s such a bad look. But Hollywood has a long history of blacklisting black actors with an undeserved “difficult” label, so it’s hard to just accept this story at face value.

–Shia LaBeouf and his ex-wife Mia Goth were spotted arm-in-arm at Disneyland.

–Sharon Stone was not impressed when she asked what it was like to work with Meryl Streep: “You didn’t say, ‘Meryl finally got to work with Sharon Stone.’ Or we finally got to work together…Viola Davis is every bit the actress Meryl Streep is. Emma Thompson. Judy Davis. Olivia Colman. Kate Winslet, for f**k’s sake. But you say Meryl and everybody falls on the floor.”

-Even Rihanna can’t convince me that fuzzy bucket hats should be back in style. Unless your name is Cher Horowitz, I don’t approve.

-The Good Fight’s season five premiere takes a wild stab at recapping 2020. (It premieres today on CBS All Access, and July 1 here in Canada on the W Network).

-Blink-182 frontman Mark Hoppus revealed he has been diagnosed with cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy.

-Here a good read on why Kenya Barris‘s Netflix deal (the biggest overall deal in comedy) unraveled.

-Mumford and Sons​ lead guitarist and banjoist Winston Marshall recently came under scrutiny for his support of a right-wing provocateur. Now, he’s leaving the band so he can “speak freely” about the “evils of political extremism.” Buh-bye!

–Vin Diesel said he feuded with The Rock to push his acting “where it needed to be,” saying “We had to get there and sometimes, at that time, I could give a lot of tough love. Not Felliniesque, but I would do anything I’d have to do in order to get performances in anything I’m producing.” I don’t know what’s funnier: that Vin Diesel thinks he’s qualified to give acting advise, or that he cited Fellini.

–James McAvoy and Sharon Horgan star as a couple forced to re-evaluate their relationship in lockdown in BBC’s Together. I wanna watch this so badly!
