Blake Lively Promotes A Simple Favor In The Weirdest Way Possible

-I enjoyed A Simple Favor way more than I thought I would despite the movie’s incessant plugging of Ryan Reynolds‘ gin brand (Paul Feig knows how to use Anne Kendrick‘s quirkiness and comic timing better than anyone else), but what the hell is this promo image that Blake Lively just tweeted?! The movie is doing well. They don’t need to do this.

–Gwyneth Paltrow and Brad Falchuk are getting married this weekend, and tonight’s rehearsal dinner is reportedly being hosted by Jerry and Jessica Seinfeld. Apparently the actual wedding will take place at her Hamptons home and will have only 20 guests.

-Pretty Little Liars’ star Ashley Benson is dating Cara Delevingne? Wut?

–Jodie Whittaker explaining that her hometown is nicknamed “shat” in front of Ryan Gosling is good content. (I love her so much. When she does that proud little hair flip after Bradley Cooper asks if her husband is from Tucson? Amazing.)

–Malia Obama appears in a music video for a band comprised of her fellow Harvard students, and it looks like she’s living her best life.

–Riley Keough tweeted that she wanted to be cast in Riverdale — and now she is! I gave up on that show halfway through the first season, but this is a really good get for the CW.

-Tom Hardy being interviewed by kids is a whole lotta cute.

–Bill Murray defended Dustin Hoffman against sexual harassment claims, calling him a “flirt.”  THIS IS NOT THE WEEK, BILL!

-For the first time in network TV history, shows with actors of color in lead roles outnumber shows with predominantly white casts. Buzzfeed talked to all of the heads of the networks about how this year the broadcasters may FINALLY have turned the corner on diversity.

-Speaking of great long reads, this feature on Robyn is excellent.

-Just ONE DAY after its first trailer dropped, Fox has pushed Dark Phoenix from Feb 14 to June 7. This is the film’s second major delay, though there’s speculation they may be planning a crossover with the MCU.

–Bradley Cooper has denied reports that he’s going to take over from James Gunn as the director of the next Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

-Someone made a 10-minute loop of Lady Gaga belting out the best part of “Shallow” from A Star is Born, and wow I really needed that today.

-A Maroon 5 fan was arrested after storming the stage and confronting Adam Levine during last night’s Toronto gig. (It’s always interesting to see moments like this when singers are shocked into inaction but the song just keeps on going. That’s quite the backing vocal he’s got, there.)

–Cardi B is reinventing herself as a fashion icon and it’s kinda working for me…

-Here’s the first trailer for Showtime’s Wall Street comedy Black Monday about the 1987 stock market crash starring Don Cheadle, Andrew Rannells and Regina Hall.

–Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly reunite in the Holmes & Watson trailer.

Amandla Stenberg Is About to Break Out

–Amandla Stenberg (who’s promoting both The Hate U Give and Where Hands Touch) covers the Oct issue of Seventeen. I did not love WHT at TIFF but I was so very impressed by how articulate and thoughtful she was during the Q&A.  (Also, that pop can shirt she wears in the Seventeen photo shoot is fire!)

–Kristen Bell announced today that a new season of Veronica Mars is officially a go at Hulu. The eight-episode season will stream in 2019, and all of the past episodes and the movie will also be available on Hulu. This is exactly the news I needed this week! I’m assuming a Cdn network will pick it up like the other Hulu shows.

-Creators Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero-Wright are both returning. Following the news, Thomas tweeted: “The movie was nostalgic. The Hulu limited series isn’t going to be. Hardcore So-Cal noir. One big case. Eight episodes to tell the story. This is a detective show.” (I seem to be one of the few who liked the movie. I know everyone complains that it was too much fan service but I’m a fan who likes to be serviced! Err, wait…)

-This is nice: Wilmer Valderrama has reportedly been a “constant presence” at ex-girlfriend Demi Lovato‘s side since her overdose.

–Chris Evans just signed on to a limited series on Apple. They keep collecting stars but not actually telling us how/where we’re supposed to watch these shows.

–Chloe Dykstra says she contemplated suicide because of Chris Hardwick-supporting harassers. “When I found out he had gotten his jobs back, I was actually relieved because I knew [the online harassment] wasn’t going to stop until he was reinstated.”

-This profile of Chevy Chase, who talks about how he’s sober and wants to work but no one wants him anymore, could double as a PSA on the importance of not treating others terribly during your entire career.

–Drake is suing a woman who he claims falsely made pegnancy and assault allegations.

-That Slate piece about how Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian are good at “performing their relationship” is getting a lot of flack — deservedly. I’m not linking to it ’cause it’s gross. Just let the woman live.

-AMC has cancelled Dietland after just one season. It was a show that started with so much promise and then just kind of … fizzled.

-Speaking of shows ending, HBO’s The Deuce will come to a close with a third and final season order. This makes sense to me. The new season just started and despite the huge stars and critical love, the buzz has been crickets.

-The Hollywood Reporter released its 100 most powerful people in entertainment list. Not a lot of big surprises, but I like that Ronan Farrow and Tiffany Haddish made their list debuts.

-A series about Marvel’s female heroes is in the works at ABC, written by the Wonder Woman writer. Please, please, please let it include Agent Carter!

–Prince Andrew reportedly wanted the BBC to air Princess Eugenie’s upcoming wedding and they said no because they assumed it would be a ratings flop.

-The butt hurt dudes on Twitter who think Brie Larson should smile more in the Captain Marvel trailer need to re-prioritize their entire lives.

-A bunch of famous women, including Julianne Moore, Eva Longoria, America Ferrera, Gabrielle Union and Amber Tamblyn, appear in a video to stand in support of Brett Kavanaugh accuser Dr. Christine Blasey Ford.

–Cary Fukunaga will direct the 25th Bond film, taking over from Danny Boyle, who left the project after reported creative clashes. He’s mostly a TV guy, having directed True Detective season one, and the new Netflix show Maniac.

-The Serial podcast is back with a new season and a very different subject topic.

-This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman hit back at “white male movie critics” who are slamming Life Itself. I saw it at TIFF and I slammed it, and I’m not a white male movie critic. I’m just a person with eyeballs.

–LCD Soundsystem‘s new “Oh Baby” video was directed by Rian Johnson and stars Sissy Spacek and David Strathairn.

-What exactly is Blake Lively trying to prove?

–Paul Feig did a really great interview with The Independent, in which he talked about wanting to write better female comedic parts (“I got tired of seeing how women were being portrayed in movies. It just got so bad, especially in comedies. They’re props basically”), and his dislike of the term ‘strong female characters’ (“It feels two-dimensional. I like women who are strong and weak and funny and vulnerable and scared”). Yeah, he can stay.

Brie Larson Is Ready To Save Us as Captain Marvel

-Everyone was sort of expecting a Captain Marvel trailer to drop today, but instead we got this EW cover and a bunch of new photos of Brie Larson in character. We’ll take it! (I dig the costume.)

-Meanwhile, Brie Larson and Alison Brie are apparently workout buddies. Do you think they call themselves Brie Squared? The Double Bries?

-Doctor Who’s Jodie Whittaker is stunning in Givenchy on the cover of Marie Claire UK.

-In other cover news, Felicity Jones channels 80’s businesswomen on the new cover of Vanity Fair.

–Kanye West took to Twitter today to apologize to Drake, saying “Let me start by apologizing for stepping on your release date in the first place,” before shutting down conspiracy theories that claimed West fed Pusha T gossip about Drake’s son for Pusha’s diss track “The Story of Adidon,” saying “I don’t play with the idea of people’s children after I spoke to Wiz [Khalifa] a few years earlier.”

-You’ve probably seen Lucas Hedges by now (he was in Lady Bird, Manchester By the Sea, and Three Billboards), but he’s about to make it huge this fall with three splashy movie roles and his Broadway debut. In a new interview with Vulture, he talks about his self-doubt (“Mostly I felt like every movie I did, I was the worst part of it”), and his sexuality (“Not totally straight, but also not gay and not necessarily bisexual”).

–Gwyneth Paltrow‘s GOOP settled its false advertising suit. The lifestyle brand agreed to a $145,000 fine and a five-year injunction for telling women to stick jade eggs up their hoo-has.

-I kind of love that Meghan Markle is wearing pants to appearances, despite what the Queen may think.

-I’m really digging the first full track from Thom Yorke‘s Suspiria score. (My office was listening to KEXP this morning when they aired it, and everyone stopped what they were doing and asked “Is this new Radiohead?!?!”, so that’s a good sign.)

–Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon are relationship goals.

-I’m too washed to care about all the drama going down on Noah Cyrus and Lil Zan‘s Instagram accounts — but it’s a lot.

-Covert Affairs/Coyote Ugly star Piper Perabo was arrested yesterday for protesting Kavanaugh’s court confirmation.

-The L.A. District Attorney has declined to pursue sex crime cases against Kevin Spacey, Anthony Anderson and Steven Seagal.

-This is an interesting look at how Twitter is helping with people’s careers amid peak TV’s push to diversify writers rooms.

-The are they/aren’t they surrounding Zendaya and Tom Holland is making my head hurt.

-The new season of House of Cards isn’t playing. They’ve already killed off Frank Underwood, according to the new trailer.

-There is a lot going on in the first trailer for American Horror Story: Apocalypse. (Mostly, I’m just hoping Mary Cherry survives the plane crash.)
