Jennifer Aniston’s Latest Role: Firefighter

–Jennifer Aniston proved she’s handy with a fire extinguisher when a bit got more dangerous than expected. Emmy head writer Molly McNearney, who’s married to Jimmy Kimmel, said the fire was supposed to go out immediately. “That was very scary, by the way. I may have grabbed some arms [backstage] to hold them back. Which is kind of crazy, ‘let my husband burn!’ But I didn’t want people rushing out. I knew that they would figure it out.”

–McNearney also explained how Courteney Cox and Lisa Kudrow were celebrating the Emmys inside Jennifer Aniston’s house: “Those women have been in a pod for a long time. And they’ve been testing every day.” Must be nice. Part of me wanted them to mention that so the audience would know it’s not ok to be having indoor parties, but the other part of me is glad they didn’t because all the people who are struggling to get tested in the US would probably not feel great knowing that the rich and famous are doing it daily preventatively.

-As for the actual show, I kind of loved it? They made the best of the hand they were dealt, and it was fast-moving ceremony with very few objectional wins. (I only wish they’d varied the category order like they usually do so all the Schitt’s Creek wins weren’t back-to-back.)

-Despite there being no in-person Emmy ceremony, many stars made bold style choices – whether that meant red carpet-ready gowns or comfy pajamas.

-It’s hilarious to me that so many Zendaya fans are angry about headlines calling her win an “upset” because they don’t understand that “upset” can mean unpredicted and surprising, not necessarily that people were upset about it.

-Congrats to Penn Badgley and Domino Kirke, who welcomed their first child. Is this the first celebrity baby announcement to involve placenta art?

-BTS broke NPR’s Tiny Desk record for the most YouTube views by a video on its first day … in about 25 minutes.

-I love Legends of Tomorrow and was really hoping it’d be the only CW show without messiness, but leads star Caity Lotz had to go and screw that up by acknowledging RGB’s death by tweeting “I love the people who will vote for Biden, and I love the people who will vote for Trump.” Not only is it no time for bothsides-ism, but it’s especially galling coming from someone who plays an LGBTQ character.

–Ellen DeGeneres addressed those multiple reports about a “toxic” work culture when the daytime program returned today, but she mostly distanced herself from any wrongdoing “I learned that things happened here that never should have happened.” She did add: “The truth is, I am that person that you see on TV. I am also a lot of other things. Sometimes I get sad, I get mad, I get anxious, I get frustrated, I get impatient — and I am working on all of that.”

–Jessica Mulroney called Meghan Markle her “kindest friend” in a since-deleted social post.

-Meanwhile, their friendship in the news again because the Daily Mail’s latest defense in their lawsuit is to claim Markle asked Mulroney to act as a “PR agent” on her behalf to “influence” press coverage. The Mail is also claiming the Duchess cooperated in the new Finding Freedom book, which refers to her father’s letter that’s at the heart of the lawsuit.

–Lori Loughlin was allowed to pick her prison, and it sounds more like a wellness retreat.

–This interview with Stanley Tucci and Colin Firth about their 20-year friendship and their new movie, in which they play a couple, is a delight!

-Despite it being a stripped down film festival, TIFF still managed to generate some big deals — mostly from Netflix, which shelled out huge for Halle Berry‘s MMA movie Bruised, the Zendaya-John David Washington quarantine-shot Malcolm & Marie and the Vanessa Kirby film Pieces of a Woman (which features a 23-minute one-shot of a home birth that’s going to haunt me for a long time).

-While Paris Hilton is getting lots of praise for her new documentary, Jezebel reminds us that she still hasn’t addressed her frequent and casual use of the n-word. Some of the quotes in this article are insane.

-I did a Zoom call with Tatiana Maslany on Friday and she said she’s NOT doing She-Hulk. I assume she’s under a gag order until Marvel officially announces it, but it was weird.

-Speaking of Marvel, the new trailer for WandaVision is kind of great?

Euphoria’s Hunter Schafer Stuns on Allure

-My god, the Allure cover and photo spread with Hunter Schafer might be my favourite in a long, long time. In the interview, she talks about not always wanting to talk in the press about her transition, and how Euphoria is a “wildly expensive TV show”, with season one reportedly costing about as much to produce as season one of Westworld.

–Angelina Jolie’s legal team is asking for the private judge assigned to their divorce case to be disqualified for failing to disclose his business relationship with one of Brad Pitt’s attorneys. Pitt’s team (via Page Six) is spinning it as “a delay tactic“.

-I was really worried when I woke up to see Patton Oswalt tweeting concern about LaKeith Stanfield’s well-being. Despite some disturbing posts the Knives Out actor made on Instagram last night, he seems to be fine.

-In Marie Claire’s new digital issue, Meghan Markle opens up about why she’s voting in Nov: “I know what it’s like to have a voice, and also what it’s like to feel voiceless.”

-Meanwhile, it turns out the royal book Finding Freedom isn’t as juicy as we’d hoped it would be.  We do learn, however, that Harry fell for her when she “happily” peed in the woods during a camping trip.

–Alyssa Milano said she was hospitalized for complications due to  COVID-19 in April and that she still has long haul symptoms of the disease months later.

–Jessica Mulroney returned to Instagram — obstinately to wish her sons a happy birthday, but that caption is a lot.

-It’s kind of cute that Scandal’s Guillermo Díaz is a Madonna superfan.

-A reboot of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is in the works with Will Smith exec-producing — although the new version will be a drama, not a comedy.

-Because there are no new ideas, Zac Efron will star in the Disney remake of Three Men and a Baby.

-This is an interesting look at how Pharrell Williams is breaking the chains of music’s troubled past by leading Black artists’ fight for equality, equity stakes and the elimination of triggering ‘master and slave’ terminology from music biz contracts.

-In a new interview, Ruby Rose talks about leaving Batwoman after one season, saying “Being the lead of a superhero show is tough. Being the lead in anything is tough.”

-This video of Shia LeBeouf getting tested for Covid getting tested for covid is weirdly endearing. I like how he says his nurse Yesenia’s name repeatedly.

-An episode of black-ish that ABC refused to air two years ago because it was too political is now available on Hulu.

–Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Keira Knightley star in the Misbehaviour trailer.

The Search for Naya Rivera Ends in Tragedy

-Awful, awful news: Divers searching the lake Naya Rivera where was reported missing recovered a body around 9:30 a.m. this morning, according to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department. They’ve since confirmed it is the actress, and have ruled out foul play. In the press conference, the sheriff said “her son described being helped onto the boat by Naya. … He told investigators he looked back and saw her disappear under the surface of the water…We believe that she mustered enough energy to get her son back on the boat, but not enough to save herself.”

-Oh god. As if this couldn’t get more tragic, today is the 7th anniversary of Cory Monteith’s passing.

-Speaking of tragic, Kelly Preston died yesterday at 57 following a two-year battle with breast cancer, her husband John Travolta announced. “She fought a courageous fight with the love and support of so many,” he said in an Instagram post.

–Lisa Marie Presley and her family are in mourning after the sudden and tragic death of her 27-year-old son, who died this weekend from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

-In response to the Daily Mail’s report that Jessica Mulroney is having trouble patching up her friendship with Meghan Markle and is considering writing a book about her, Ben Mulroney tweeted “FALSE.” No word if he was referring to their friendship’s status, the book, or both.

–Victoria and David Beckham‘s son Brooklyn is engaged to Nicola Peltz.

-One of my favourite new celeb couples is already over: Bill Hader and Rachel Bilson have split.

-Speaking of splits, Darius Rucker, Hootie & the Blowfish singer-turned-country-star, and Beth Leonard are over after 20 years of marriage.

–John Legend tweeted some truth today: “Reporters always ask me if more artists should speak out about politics. I always say ummmmmm not necessarily. It ain’t for everybody. If you’re more comfortable just making bops, do that. We need that in our lives too! If you are going to speak out, try to do your homework. Read about it. Talk to activists and organizers and people impacted. Be open to evolution and changing your mind. Be intentional and strategic. And think about the impact of your words on the real lives of real people”

-CBS, which has arguably the most problematic history of all networks, announced new goals for their show’s writers’ rooms: At least 40 percent of staffs must be BIPOC for 2021-2022 shows, and 50 percent by the 2022-2023 season
