Michaela Coel Plots Her Next Move

michaela-coel-variety

-Variety’s Power of Women covers continue to crush it, but the Michaela Coel one is spectacular. In the interview, she talks about Jane Fonda being a fan of I Will Destroy You (“I imagine if I bumped into her outside of the supermarket, we’d be nerding out on all of the hidden meanings and layers because I can see that she really gets it. She watches it the way that I dreamed the audience would watch it”), and “meeting” Kerry Washington at the SAG Awards (“I imagine, if the show was in real life, she’d be sat over there and I’d be way too shy to go over and say, ‘Hey, I’ve been watching you on my screen for decades.’ I was still too shy to say any of that on Zoom, but she knew my name. I was like ‘Oh my God, hi!’ You can’t do that in real life”)

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have shared a never-before-seen pic of Archie on his 2nd birthday. They’re asking fans to celebrate by donating to the Vaccine Alliance.

Mariah Carey posted a video of getting her second shot and panned to the florescent lights saying “Would I ever go into this lighting for no reason?” I love her.

Paris Hilton addressed one of her most controversial outfits, claiming she never wore a tank that said Stop Being Poor and it was photoshopped. I don’t know if that’s true?

Jessica Alba is having a good week. Her Honest Company officially went public, raising $413 million in its IPO.

-Sanditon’s cancelation has been reversed by PBS, which just ordered two more seasons of the show. I’m guessing this wouldn’t have happened without the breakout success of Bridgerton. I liked the first season well enough but it has the potential to be much better.

Lilly Singh’s NBC late-night show is coming to an end, but she’s keeping busy. She’s set to star in a scripted comedy for Kenya Barris at Netflix and develop unscripted far for NBCU.

Camila Cabello’s jump to acting hit a road bump. Her Cinderella movie is skipping its planned theatrical debut and heading straight to streaming.

-I haven’t watched Grey’s Anatomy in ages, but I might tune into this week’s for the Japril reunion.

-Why yes, I will read an oral history of Madonna’s Truth or Dare, thank you.

-Paramount Plus will release a new movie every week.

-The new Stranger Things season 4 teaser hints at seeing more of Eleven‘s backstory.

-I kind of want to order from UberEats this weekend just to see if I can score a free candle from Drake.

Courteney Cox says taping the Friends reunion “was unbelievable, so emotional” and it will feature “a lot of special surprises.”

-Michael B. Jordan says he bombed his Star Wars audition because the franchise’s secrecy gave him no time to prepare.

-Here’s the trailer for the final run of episodes of The Bold Type.

-I feel like the Tina Fey-produced new Peacock series Girls5Eva is exactly what I need these days. (It’ll premiere in June on W in Canada.)

Gina Rodriguez stars in the trailer for Netflix’s Awake, in which the entire world goes crazy after everyone is suddenly unable to fall asleep. As someone who occasionally suffers from insomnia, this whole premise freaks me out.

Say a Little Prayer for EW’s My Best Friend’s Wedding Reunion

My Best Friends Wedding reunion EW

-I gave up on my EW subscription last year because I never had time to read it (plus it was weirdly expensive?) but I’ll definitely be picking up the print edition of their romcom issue. Every article they’ve released from it so far has been great, but the My Best Friend’s Wedding cover seals the deal. I recently rewatched it and it’s even more problematic than I remember (Kimmy’s a child! Julianne’s a monster!) but this oral history is very fun. I really hope this marks the start of Cameron Diaz’s un-retirement cause I missed her.

-It’s a big day in covers. Newlyweds Justin Bieber and Hailey Bieber landed on the March issue of Vogue.  I hate that he’s not wearing a shirt, but it’s completely expected at this point. They talk about working on their marriage (“We’re coming from a really genuine place. But we’re two young people who are learning as we go”), reflect on his past (“my mom was depressed a lot of my life and my dad has anger issues. Stuff that they passed on that I’m kind of mad they gave me”), and talk about Hailey’s stabilizing influence.

-Meanwhile, like many others I will never read about Hailey without thinking of that bit in Caity Weaver’s GQ Bieber profile in which she’s just sitting in his hotel room, doing nothing and waiting for him.

Michelle Rodriguez says Liam Neeson can’t be racist because of how he passionately frenched Viola Davis in Widows. Um, what now?

-Hollywood is now developing movies based on Reddit threads.

-It looks like Disney+ is shaping up to be a true Netflix competitor, with non-Disney shows streaming, too.

Chris Pratt seems confident that Disney will use James Gunn’s script for Guardians 3.

Steve Buscemi has responded to that viral video of Jennifer Lawrence with his face: “It makes me sad.”

-Scrubs star Sam Lloyd (who played Ted the lawyer) hit his fundraising goal in two days after revealing lung & brain cancer diagnosis.

Seth Meyers got drunk with the Barefoot Contessa. He’s living my dream!!

Ariana Grande clarified why she dropped out of the Grammys. She called out the show’s producer Ken Ehrlich for “lying about me” when he told the Associated Press that she “felt it was too late for her to pull something together.” Grande tweeted, “I can pull together a performance over night and you know that, Ken. It was when my creativity & self expression was stifled by you, that I decided not to attend.”

-Ariana is all about clearing up rumours today. She’s denying a feud with Nicki Minaj.

Jennifer Garner talked about being “surrounded by paparazzi” while being married to Ben Affleck.

Naya Rivera has spoken out about those Lea Michele feud rumours on the Glee set: “I don’t think there was any beef.”

Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba have a pillow fight in the LA’s Finest trailer.

Hollywood Heavyweights Shonda Rhimes, Reese Witherspoon and More Say #TimesUp

-God, I’m relieved it’s so much more than black dresses at awards shows. Yesterday, in unity, 300 Hollywood women  announced the launch of Time’s Up, a new initiative which includes a legal fund aimed to protect sexual harassment victims in every workplace, from janitors to waitresses to factory workers, and specially immigrant women. Shonda Rhimes, Reese Witherspoon, Donna Langley, and Nina Shaw are among the key players. Contributors to the defense fund include Meryl Streep, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston, Stacey Snider, Dana Walden, Regina King, Felicity Huffman, Megan Ellison, Kate Hudson, Viola Davis, Ava DuVernay, Alicia Vikander, Amy Poehler, Olivia Munn, Taylor Swift, Jessica Chastain and more. Learn more at their website.

Hoda Kotb has been named a permanent Today Show co-host, taking over for Matt Lauer after his firing due to sexual harassment complaints. I wonder if she’s also taking over his reported $20 million salary?

-Here’s an interesting look at how men are losing their jobs over sexual harassment — and women are replacing them.

-And here’s a look at the female-led plans to turn the Weinstein Co’s tainted assets into something positive.

-The Hollywood Reporter has created a sexual-misconduct beat and assigned seven reporters, who are “fielding ten to fifteen tips a day.”

-Lots of people on Twitter are speculating that the next man to be exposed will be Max Landis. But will he?

-Huh. Paris Hilton is engaged to the Chris Zylka, aka guy who played Justin Theroux’s son on The Leftovers.  Double huh: He somehow got her a 20-carat ring, $2 million ring.

-This article on how Tom Hanks‘ Big is secretly a horror movie actually makes a lot of sense.

-One of my favourite New Year’s Day traditions is hungoverly scrolling through CDAN’s blind item reveals. I always skip right over the Old Hollywood ones, but I really gravitated towards the kindness ones this year for some reason (maybe because 2017 was such a garbage fire). Some of the best involved Ed Sheeran, Hugh Jackman, Bruce Willis and Ryan Seacreast.  In non-kindness ones, I really hope this Candice Patton reveal is true because I really dig her and this is a boss move. (But if it is, it’s also why I find it so impossible to decipher his TV blinds because his clues make no sense. The Flash *is* the most popular CW show, ratings-wise).

-Here’s Justin Timberlake‘s new album preview. Oh god, he’s gone full Bon Iver, guys!

-I actually don’t think Chrissy Teigen was trying to defend Logan Paul in her tweets this morning; I think she was trying to have a conversation about the knee-jerk internet campaigns designed to ruin people when they screw up. He is not the example I would have used because I personally think this guy’s career is an escalating waterfall of f**kery and should be ended, but I get what she was trying to say. (She’s since made her account private.)

Jessica Alba closed off the year by welcoming a new son.

Will Smith made a very gushy Instagram post on his and Jada‘s anniversary.

Will Ferrell and Molly Shannon did a fake Rose Bowl parade commentary and everyone was very confused.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry reportedly flew to France in coach. Celebs, they’re just like us! I mean, they took up three rows in the back, were surrounded by bodyguards, and got to board before everyone else, but otherwise: totally like us.

-I’m pretty sure if someone called me the c-word on Twitter I would just ignore them or fight with them. But Sarah Silverman is clearly a way better person than I am and got to the bottom of her troll’s problems.

-So this is Dave Chappelle‘s take on Louis CK? In the words of @ira: keep it.

-More reviews of The X Files’ new season have come out, and then general consensus seems to be that if you can get past its bad season premiere, the rest of the episodes are solid and overall it’s way better than last year. I still can’t figure out why anyone thought it would be a good idea to start this week (when no one is expecting new episodes of anything) and then immediately take a week off?

-Meanwhile, Gillian Anderson has confirmed that this is it for her and The X Files.

-All of these deleted scenes from the final season of Parks & Rec sound awesome and I want to watch them right now.

-Here’s the trailer for Netflix’s The End of the F***ing World, the super dark teen romance series based on the graphic novels. This has potential.

-The new Fifty Shades Freed trailer includes a car chase, a wedding, and a pregnancy reveal. I guess they can give everything away in the trailer because it’s not like the people who are going to see it are watching it for plot.
