Phoebe Waller-Bridge Talks Fleabag

phoebe waller bridge gq

-It’s a banner day for us Phoebe Waller-Bridge fans. Tina Fey interviewed her for British GQ, where she talked about the critical reception to Fleabag (“The British press were like, [it’s] is the filthiest, most overly exposed, sexually exposing show ever.’ They made out like I was naked the whole way through. I was like, ‘There is not a moment of nudity in the series.’ I just say stuff about my asshole straight down the barrel. I think that makes people feel so naked, but the language was more naked than the actual performance.”)

Waller-Bridge is also on the cover of The Hollywood Reporter’s comedy actress issue, alongside Tiffany Haddish, Jane Fonda, Maya Rudolph, Natasha Lyonne, Alex Borstein and Regina Hall. She talks about why she loves writing Fleabag: “I write women who don’t give a shit because I am teaching myself how to be one. I just feel such a catharsis when I turn to the camera and just say that f**king line and it’s just such an amazing feeling. I’d like to be more like that.”

-Following the Natale Portman kerfuffle, Moby has called off the rest of his book tour as well as “all upcoming public appearances for the foreseeable future,” saying “I’m going to go away for a while.”

-As if we needed another reason to stan her, Meghan Markle has reportedly bowed out of meeting Trump.

Prince Harry took a commercial flight and his fellow passengers couldn’t help but sneak pics of him.

-This makes a lot of sense: CBS announced it will air season 1 of CBS All Access’ The Good Fight this summer, beginning June 16. While I think season 2 is better, this whole show is so, so good!

-I was scared to see Alex Trebek‘s name trending earlier today, but it’s good news! A few months after revealing he had stage 4 pancreatic cancer, he says he’s “near remission,” telling People: “It’s kind of mind-boggling … The doctors said they hadn’t seen this kind of positive result in their memory … some of the tumors have already shrunk by more than 50 percent.”

Laura Dern just graced us with this perfect IG post and the world doesn’t deserve her.

Ashton Kutcher testified today in the murder trial for the man accused of killing his friend, Ashley Ellerin. The actor testified that he went to Ellerin’s house the night she was murdered to pick her up for drinks, but there was no answer so he assumed she wasn’t home. He said when he looked in her window, he saw what he thought were red wine stains on her carpet.

Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix might be engaged.

-This video of Will Smith talking to kids at the Aladdin premiere is all kinds of precious.

-While doing press for Avu DuVernay‘s new Netflix series When They See Us, Joshua Jackson talked about confronting his blind spots as a white man. DuVernay praised his comments, tweeting: “When I first met with [him], I didn’t know what to expect. Certainly not THIS. Had never had a convo like that with a white actor. He surprised me in the most unexpected, beautiful way.”

-When They See Us star Aurora Perrineau talked to Glamour about the series, as well as that apology she got from Lena Dunham, who initially didn’t believe Perrineau’s allegations that Girls writer and exec producer Murray Miller had assaulted her when she was 17.

-Netflix changed its thumbnail for Nailed It! when host Nicole Byer criticized it for whitewashing the show.

-The current showrunner of The Chi, who started in season two, has gone public on the misconduct claims surrounding actor Jason Mitchell, telling the Hollywood Reporter: “I became a target of his rage and inappropriateness, and had to report him to HR, as well…. Ultimately, everyone was well aware of Jason’s behavior and his multiple HR cases, including Lena [Waithe].” Meanwhile, show creator Waithe maintains that she was told of the actor’s alleged actions only after the first season wrapped. (Even if that’s the case, the show didn’t drop Mitchell until its current third season.)

-I really needed this video of Lil Nas X surprising elementary kids today.

-I really liked these details about the vocal-technique work Michelle Williams did to prepare for her performance in Fosse/Verdon. I definitely need to catch up on this show.

Ansel Elgort posted 17 shirtless pics in a row on Insta, and everyone is very confused.

-Speaking of Ansel, the trailer for The Goldfinch, starring him, Nicole Kidman and Sarah Paulson, dropped today. That was one of those books I read because everyone kept gushing over it, but I found it a bit of a slog. But if you like long and very detailed passages about the art of woodworking, it’ll be your jam.

Best and Worst Dressed at the 2018 Oscars

The red carpet was *tense* this year, mostly because of the whole Ryan Seacrest of it all. Adding to the weirdness, it was really, really hard to pinpoint many “bad” dresses. For the most part, everyone brought it — or, at the very least, didn’t embarrass themselves. So let’s celebrate the good and reflect on the (very few) bad:

BEST DRESSED AT THE 2018 OSCARS:

Jen: Look, if you had told me yesterday that Jennifer Garner would be my best Oscar dress pick, I would have side-eyed you hard. And yet, here we are! Loved the colour, loved the neckline, loved the earrings, loved the hair. This is how you announce to the world that you’re ready for your comeback.

Nicole: There were some great pops of colour on the red carpet and Alison Janney’s custom Reem Acra looked like it was molded to her body. I don’t know how she looked so comfortable in a dress that fitted but she radiated confidence. I hope she has fun with those sleeves!

Jen: This Michael Kors dress didn’t photograph as vibrantly as it looked on TV, but holy smokes Viola Davis was stunning in bright pink and big hair. I’m in love.

Nicole: We had a room full of people watching the red carpet and there was a collective gasp when Gal Godot walked onscreen in her Givenchy gown. It was fitted but had great movement and was sexy but not over the top. Equally loved by the men and women in the room.

Jen: There was a lot of white on this carpet (Mary J Blige in Versace, Laura Dern in Calvin Klein, Margot Robbie in Chanel) but for my money, Jane Fonda rose above the rest by looking like she’s auditioning for a Dynasty remake in this white Balmain dress.

Nicole: There were some lovely white gowns and Jane Fonda was luminous, however Mary J Blige was my favourite. She was stunning in a simple and structured Versace gown with a dropped waist. She glowed on the red carpet.

Jen: Dior has let Jennifer Lawrence down a lot in the past (a lot!) but that wasn’t the case this year. I don’t know that I loved the makeup, but the perfectly fitted dress was fierce.

Nicole: Greta Gerwig has had a terrific awards season and her grand finale in custom Rodarte was a ray of sunshine on the red carpet. She embraced colour all the way through the season and looked radiant with simple accessories and her hair tucked behind her ears. Perfect.

Jen: Sandra Bullock can do no wrong when she opts for metallic. I love this Louis Vuitton dress. She’s 53(!) and she just keeps looking better and better.

Nicole: Lupita Nyong’o brought more of her Black Panther promo tour glam to the Oscars with her custom atelier Versace gold gown. The simple fitted bodice flowed like liquid gold into a metallic skirt. She can do no wrong.

WORST DRESSED AT THE 2018 OSCARS:

Jen: There weren’t many full-on disasters on this year’s red carpet, but Emily Blunt came the closest in this dowdy Schiaparelli dress. Is this some kind of weird pre-promotion for her upcoming Mary Poppins movie?

Nicole: My mouth dropped when I saw Salma Hayek’s pink sparkly Gucci tiered…prom dress? Completely unnecessary draped diamond epaulettes turned this dress into a spangled cowboy look.

Jen: Saoirse Ronan has been killing it on the awards circuit this year, so I’m bummed that her pale Calvin Klein dress underwhelms. It was boxy, poorly fitted and not as flattering as it should be.

Stranger Things 2 Gets the EW Cover Treatment

stranger things season 2 entertainment weekly cover

-I keep forgetting that Stranger Things returns in a few weeks. According to the new EW cover story, the new season will follow several disparate stories that intertwine but all roads eventually lead to the “shadow monster.” The Duffer Brothers are also insisting we call it Stranger Things 2 because they think of it as a movie sequel. They know they work in TV now, right?

-Oh jeez, Khloe Kardashian is reportedly pregnant, too.

-This is nice: Pitbull is providing his own private plane to help cancer patients get treatment after Hurricane Maria.

-Scroll down to the end of this article to see some awesome footage of Jane Fonda shutting Megyn Kelly down.

-This seems really beneath Angelina Jolie. Like really, really beneath her. I’m so confused.

Conan tried to invent his own ‘Carpool Karoake’-type segment with Tom Cruise as the first guest and it got real uncomfortable, real fast.

-Also, Tom shut down those rumours that he wore a fake butt in Valkyrie.

-I was getting a little worried about the lack of buzz for Denis Villeneuve‘s Blade Runner 2049 but they started screening the film for critics and the initial response is pretty damn glowing.

-I haven’t had a chance to watch the This Is Us premiere yet, but everyone else seemed to. It delivered its biggest ratings ever.

-Holy shit: Michelle Williams is in talks to star in Venom opposite Tom Hardy. That’s… unexpected.

-Also unexpected, the revival of Will & Grace is getting good reviews. Really good reviews.

Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio are just trolling us at this point, right?

-If Justin Timberlake gets invited to perform at the Super Bowl I will angry-scream into a pillow for days.

James Cameron is standing by his Wonder Woman comments, saying the character isn’t groundbreaking because “she’s absolutely drop-dead gorgeous.” *groan*

Prince Harry says Meghan Markle is “loving” the Invictus Games.

-It’s amazing what winning an Emmy can do. Hulu is playing with the big boys now, scoring 30 Rock and Parenthood for their library in a massive deal with NBC.

John Legend fights for new home for the TV show Underground in a new op-ed.

-Looks like Chappaquiddick is getting an awards-qualifying release date, premiering the same weekend as I, Tonya and The Shape of Water.

-The first teaser trailer for Annihilation starring Natalie Portman, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson and Oscar Isaac is crazy creepy.
