Cardi B Lands the September Issue of Elle

cardi b elle sept cover

Cardi B’s first Elle cover happens to be its most important. She doesn’t waste it either, using the interview to call out male rappers for not talking about Breonna Taylor (“She was young. She looked like she was listening to your music. She looked like she was your fan. You should stick up for her”), and criticize Trump (“Those people that he caters [to], he’s not going to do anything for them. It’s not like Republicans are getting better housing. It’s not like Republicans are getting better benefits. They’re not. He’s not doing anything for anybody”). She also addresses her controversial marriage to Offset (“I do know that my relationship has a lot of drama and everything. But there’s a lot of love, there’s a lot of passion, there’s a lot of trust, there’s a big friendship. It’s always us against the world”).

-In her new Cosmo cover story, Joey King reveals that it wasn’t easy pretending to be in love with Jacob Elordi for Kissing Booth 2 – who she split from in real life. “No one’s thinking to themselves, That was easy, because it wasn’t. I’m sure people will analyze every movement and every detail. And you know what? Let them. But at the end of the day, I was just thrilled to be Elle Evans again…What’s the most, um, correct way to go about this? Elle Evans needs her Noah Flynn, and whatever that means for my personal life, I’ll do anything to make sure the story of my character who I care about so much is complete.”

-In her Health cover story, Hilary Swank talks about returning to Hollywood after taking a five year break to care for her dad.

Beyoncé made a fan’s day by surprising her with a sweet phone call.

-I don’t believe any numbers/ratings put out by streaming companies, but a third party analyst claims Hamilton got blockbuster views.

Stephen “tWitch” Boss, the house DJ on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, made a supportive (I think?) comment about working for her, saying “We can’t speak too much legally about it, but I’ll say this, there’s been love. Obviously there’s some things to address, but from my standpoint and from countless others, there’s been love.”

-Former castmates and friends toast Eugene Levy while he tries not to tear up in this video.

-If I had to guess which new movie is actually going to make it into theatres in two weeks, it wouldn’t be New Mutants, which has suffered multiple delays in the past two years.

Kanye West met with Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner last week  — and TMZ is saying that Kim knew nothing about it.

-This is a fantastic NYT profile on Canadian singer Kathleen Edwards and why she stepped away from the music industry for so long.

Viola Davis didn’t actually purchase the former South Carolina plantation where she was born 55 years ago — her caption meant she owns the “story” not the house.

-This is a pretty great list of the 100 best TV characters of the 21st century. Love seeing Tami Taylor, Tom Wambsgans, Arabella, Forrest MacNeil, Elizabeth Jennings, Paper Boi, and Blair Waldorf make the top 20.

Roxane Gay is adapting her graphic novel for the big screen. Give her all the moneys!

John Leguizamo coaches the first chess team from an inner city to win the U.S. National Chess Championship in the trailer for Critical Thinking.

Zendaya Is Stunning In InStyle

zendaya instyle september 2020

Zendaya covers the September issue of InStyle, styled by Law Roach and wearing Pyer Moss, Hanifa, Romeo Hunte and Christopher John Rogers. Roach said he only used clothing, shoes and jewels from black designers for the shoot.

In the story, Zendaya talks to Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors about her activism. “I’m an actress, but I’m also just a person who has a heart and wants to do the right thing.”

-Zendaya’s rumoured boyfriend Jacob Elordi is interviewed in Variety, and talked about not yet seeing Kissing Booth 2, and the attention surrounding Deep Water costars Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas (“I feel so bad for them. Let them walk their bloody dog”).

-E! News is reporting that Jennifer Garner has split from John Miller after almost 2 years together. In (possibly related?) other news, she was spotted hanging out with Alias costar Bradley Cooper and his daughter on a beach in Malibu. (This is a much better rumour than the one about Bradley dating Anna Wintour, which is somehow circulating again.)

-Meanwhile, Bradley was spotted grabbing dinner with Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio.

-In a clip for the new season of Selling Sunset, Chrishell Stause reveals This Is Us star Justin Hartley told her via text that he had filed for divorce. “I found out because he texted me that we were filed. Forty-five minutes later, the world knew … I talked to him right after ‘cause I thought that must be a joke, but that was kind of the end of the communication.”

Jason Momoa had wife Lisa Bonet‘s old Mustang restored. I can’t tell if this is just an elaborate ad for Ford or not, but it’s sweet enough that I can’t seem to bring myself to care.

George and Amal Clooney have donated $100k to Lebanese charities helping provide aid in Beirut.

-I’m very bummed that High Fidelity starring Zoe Kravitz has been canceled after just one season.

-Three of Bon Appétit’s Test Kitchen stars of color are departing the video channel after failed contract negotiations. Priya Krishna, Rick Martinez, and Sohla El-Waylly will no longer be in Test Kitchen videos, they announced on Instagram. How do you have a very public reckoning with how your treat your non-white employees, and STILL try to lowball them? Krishna mentioned in her statement: “Some of my colleagues in the test kitchen have been publicly supportive but privately complicit, even helping to interview BIPOC video candidates they know will be underpaid.”

-Amazon has ordered a TV adaptation of A League of Their Own, co-created by and starring Broad City’s Abbi Jacobson. Great, now do Pitch!

Taylor Swift has confirmed that Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively‘s daughter’s name is Betty, which I like a lot.

Keke Palmer is set to host the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards at the end of the month. I wish covid didn’t mess this up by making the show more subdued than it usually is, cause she deserves a big moment.

-Music producer Detail, who has worked with Beyonce, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj and Jennifer Lopez, was arrested and charged with 15 counts of sexual assault and five additional felony assault-related charges.

-This is huge, great news: Candyman’s Nia DaCosta will direct the Captain Marvel sequel.

-What’s going on with YouTubers this week? First Jake Paul’s house is raided by the FBI, and now Alan and Alex Stokes have been arrested and charged with felony false imprisonment and misdemeanor swatting.

Bella Hadid called out cops who weren’t wearing masks.

-It seems the racists can’t tolerate even mainstream darling Oprah finally calling out white privilege.

-This is a very good point about all of the celebrities who are posting support for Ellen Degeneres: their posts sound like they came from a digital media kit. The fact that so many of them reference exact amounts of what she’s contributed to charity is suspicious.

-The release date for Bill & Ted 3 has been moved again — this time up a week. Makes sense, as the following week is suddenly looking busy with Tenet and Mulan duking it out in what is sure to be a very closely watched battle pitting theatres vs streaming.

-A teaser is out for A24’s Zola, a thriller born from a Twitter thread about a Hooters waitress who meets a girl who asks if she wants to make some extra money stripping, and then they end up on a roadtrip to Florida that involves prostitution, pimps, a bipolar boyfriend, kidnapping, and murder. It is a master class in storytelling.

-Also, A24 correcting People’s headline about the teaser is priceless.

-As if she hasn’t given us enough with Black is King, Beyonce also posted three new photos today on Instagram.

Nicole Kidman, Bobby Cannavale and Melissa McCarthy are set to star in Hulu’s limited series Nine Perfect Strangers, which is based on Liane Moriarty’s latest book.

-HBO has shared the first teaser trailer for David E. Kelley and Susanne Bier’s The Undoing, starring Hugh Grant and Nicole Kidman.

-Showtime has debuted the first clip for Bryan Cranston’s limited legal drama Your Honor.

-A trip to meet the parents becomes a horror show in the trailer for Charlie Kaufman‘s i’m thinking of ending things.

Oprah Puts Breonna Taylor on the Cover of O

Oprah-Winfrey-Breonna-Taylor

-For the first time ever in O’s 20-year history, Oprah Winfrey is not on the cover of her magazine. Breonna Taylor is.

Taylor Swift and her team have moved quickly to respond to accusations that she copied the logo for the merchandise that goes with her new album, and has changed the design.

-She has remained silent though as fans continue to harass and dox the Pitchfork reviewer who gave the album 8/10. Sadly, with the toxic nature of some stan culture, this is only going to stop when she tells them to.

Jacob Elordi talks about working out seven days a week, twice a day when shooting the first Kissing Booth movie: “At the time, I was super young and got thrown into a world where everyone wanted to talk about my body…it really f*cking bothered me. I don’t identify with that whatsoever. I was trying to prove myself and be known as an actor. It was so much working out and I hated every second of it.”

-This list of questions raised by The Kissing Booth 2 is very good (though I still thought it was miles away better — and less problematic — than the first).

-According to People’s excerpts of Finding Freedom, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were actually engaged a lot sooner than we initially thought.

-The promos for Drew Barrymore‘s new talk show are kinda wild, y’all.

Julianne Moore is not sure she would star in The Kids Are All Right as a straight woman if it were made today. I love that movie — but she’s not wrong.

Alanis Morissette and Liz Phair were supposed to tour together this summer. The two met for a Zoom conversation with the L.A. Times that had them swapping horror stories about men in the ’90s.

-TIFF has announced its film lineup and it includes Regina King‘s directorial debut — which was just bought by Amazon Studio.

-Portrait of a Lady on Fire, which topped many people’s Best Movie of 2019 lists, is now streaming on Crave.

-This profile on rapper Flo Milli is great — and not just because she lays out a really sneaky way to grow Instagram followers.

-Australia’s Today Show executive Neil Breen opened up about his own experience with the Ellen Degeneres‘ staff when the talk show host was there to be interviewed. “The producer called us aside and said, ‘Now Neil, no one is to talk to Ellen. You don’t talk to her, you don’t approach her, you don’t look at her. She’ll come in, she’ll sit down, she’ll talk to Richard and then Ellen will leave…I have no idea whether she’s a nice person or not, I wouldn’t have a clue. But I can tell you the people who work with her walked on eggshells the whole time.”

-Meanwhile, in a letter to employees obtained by THR, DeGeneres apologized to her staff and vowed to “correct the issues” — though she seems to place the blame on her producers: “As we’ve grown exponentially, I’ve not been able to stay on top of everything and relied on others to do their jobs as they knew I’d want them done. Clearly some didn’t.”

-Happy Endings star Damon Wayans Jr. is reuniting with the series’ creator David Caspe and and two of the show’s writers for a half-hour bounty hunter action comedy on Peacock. Not exactly the HE reunion I wanted but I’ll take it.

David Lynch‘s daily videos often feature unexplained props and it’s kind of amazing. “What is the purpose of this jar? Why did I paint it this certain way? Here in LA [proceeds to give a weather report and never mentions the jar again…]”

George RR Martin isn’t the only author testing our patience. Patrick Rothfuss’ failure to deliver the third book in his Kingkiller Chronicle series led his editor to lash out on Facebook.

Beyonce shared a new trailer for Black Is King, her movie that drops at midnight tonight on Disney+.
