Zendaya and John David Washington’s Old-School Glam

zendaya john david washington

-I can’t help but wonder if Zendaya and John David Washington‘s W issue was supposed to be timed to the Oscar nominations — and Malcolm & Marie ended up with none. The photos sure are pretty though.

-I don’t think anyone guessed it’d be David Fincher’s Mank, a black and white Netflix movie about making Citizen Kane, to lead the Oscar nominations with 10 nods. (Also, despite leading the nominations — and being about screenwriting — Mank failed to score a screenplay nod.)  Weirdly, out of the eight Best Picture noms, the only ones I haven’t seen are the two easily accessible Netflix films.

-I’m shocked that Regina King didn’t make the Best Director cut for One Night in Miami. The movie didn’t score a Best Picture nod either, which is devastating.

-This is rare: Lakeith Stanfield was submitted as a lead actor candidate, but Oscar voters don’t have to follow those category suggestions — and he ended up getting more votes in the supporting actor category.

-Last night’s Grammys ceremony was so well-produced, it made the Golden Globes look even worse in retrospect.

-The show also gave us a new Beyonce meme so there’s that. Also, some more Harry Styles and Lizzo content, which is always welcome.

Tiffany Haddish found out she won a Grammy while filming Kids Say the Darnest Things and shared the clip.

-We’re going to need a tell-all just on what happened with Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez over the last three days.  There’s no way that outlets like People ran that story on Friday quoting multiple sources confirming their breakup without some serious insider knowledge. So how to explain the messy “we’re working through some things” correction/ statement on Saturday morning? Either one of them was angry enough on Friday to go to the media, or the way the subsequent break up stories were being spun didn’t sit well.

-The rumours about her getting close with new costar Lenny Kravitz are predictable and likely ridiculous but I’m into it.

-CBS put The Talk on a short hiatus while they investigate Sharon Osbourne’s comments. There’s also reports that she got Holly Robinson Peete fired from the show.

John Oliver devoted almost his entire show to demonstrate how Tucker Carlson is “the most prominent vessel in America for white supremacist talking points.”

Rita Ora didn’t show up to be a guest judge on Drag Race UK, so they replaced her with a mannequin. Think anyone noticed?

-I’m not sure I fully agree with it, but this is an interesting take on the WandaVision finale and the concept of “story karma.” Basically, viewers don’t necessarily want beloved characters who do evil to be punished — but we need to know that the show knows they *should* be punished.

Tori Spelling and Jennie Garth denied former costar Vanessa Marcil’s claims about how catty the set of Beverly Hills 90210 was.

-Bridgerton season 2 is officially filming!

Gwyneth Paltrow dismissed criticism for her covid remedies as “click-bait.” Yeah, because England’s National Health Service is really trying to plump their web traffic numbers.

Kyle Chandler is sporting an insane beard and he’s still adorable.

Joe Cornish says he and John Boyega have been bouncing around ideas for Attack the Block 2. I need it!

-Here’s the final trailer for Falcon & the Winter Soldier before it drops this weekend.

-Maybe it’s because I’m so desperate to go to the movies again, but I think the new Cruella trailer looks amazing.

-Speaking of going to the movies again, will the quick rollout of the vaccine in the US set In The Heights up for big box office success this summer?

Gwyneth Paltrow: Still Not a Medical Expert

-In news that is no way shocking, doctors are urging people to ignore Gwyneth Paltrow’s advice about how to fight covid.

-This is insane: Lady Gaga’s personal dog walker was shot multiple times in LA, and two of her French bulldogs were stolen. She’s offering $500k reward.

-Despite a Daily Mail article and some DeuxMoi chatter, Emma Watson‘s publicist insists she’s not stepping away from acting.

-In their People cover story, Mariska Hargitay recalls being “sad” and “devastated” when Christopher Meloni left Law & Order: SVU.

-This is a great read on Joss Whedon and the myth of the Hollywood male feminist.

John Mulaney is reportedly out of rehab and “doing well.

Britney Spears‘ dad is going on the defensive. A little late, but sure.

Prince William and Kate are said to be “appalled” that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle agreed to a sit down with Oprah. Appalled or jealous?

-Meanwhile, courtiers and other royal hangers-on are said to be bracing for the interview.

-I like this piece on how WandaVision is the first show to encapsulate the pandemic.

Khloe Kardashian says her feet are *supposed* to look so stretched and alien in those GA ads. Oh. Good job, then.

-I gave a bunch of my girlfriends mask chains for xmas (from a Canadian company), and I’m loving the one Sarah Jessica Parker wears here.

-Reply All’s Test Kitchen will no longer release the remaining episodes of the Bon Appétit-centered miniseries — which is a shame. Clearly, there were storytelling problems, but the POC employees who spoke out deserve to be heard.

-This is an excellent – if awkward – interview with the real-life white female film critic who is assumed to have inspired John David Washington‘s character to get so angry in Malcolm & Marie.

-I watched the Russo Brother’s Cherry starring Tom Holland the other night and … woof. Holland tries his best but it is a long, bleak slog.

-This oral history on the ending of Lost is a great read. Josh Holloway on the church scene: “We also got drunk, I think, while we did it. A little bit, you know, because we’re all celebrating. That was the last scene that we all did together. So we were slipping over to each other’s trailer and having a glass of wine, going back in and doing some more scene. It was great.”

-The documentary Framing Britney Spears is *finally* out in Canada legally this weekend via Crave.

-The Handmaid’s Tale dropped a trailer for its fourth season, which starts April 28. I forgot this show was still around…

Gwyneth Paltrow Strikes Again

-Remember when Gwyneth Paltrow pretended to be responsible for the yoga trend? Now she’s trying to claim the same about face masks. Sit down, lady.

-People really had Megan Thee Stallion‘s new Harper’s cover — but she’s into it.

-We always heard that the people behind the votes for the Golden Globe Awards were susceptible to um, influence, but a new Los Angeles Times report about the shenanigans behind this year’s nominations is especially eye opening. That much ridiculed nomination for Emily In Paris makes a lot more sense when you read “Paramount Network treated [more than 30 members] to a two-night stay at the five-star Peninsula Paris hotel, where rooms currently start at about $1,400 a night, and a news conference and lunch at the Musée des Arts Forains, a private museum filled with amusement rides dating to 1850 where the show was shooting.” Oh, and the HFPA also has no Black members!

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry surprised a Texas women’s shelter by giving them the funds to replace their roof damaged in the brutal winter storm.

-Meanwhile, the royal family may be trying to steal the spotlight from Harry and Meghan’s interview with Oprah by airing their own TV address.

-A settlement deal has been reached in a 2019 lawsuit alleging that James Franco intimidated his students into sexual situations at the acting school he founded.

Daft Punk’s publicist confirmed the band has split up.  We really are living in the darkest timeline, aren’t we?

Chris D’Elia broke his silence on those allegations of pursuing underage girls in a long YouTube video. He says he was a sex addict — which doesn’t explain or excuse the underage part.

-With all the awful clips of interviewers like David Letterman treating young female stars like crap, this old clip makes me appreciate Strombo even more.

Gillian Anderson is finding a niche playing 20th century female political icons. She’ll follow up her turn as Margaret Thatcher in The Crown by playing Eleanor Roosevelt in Showtime’s upcoming anthology series The First Lady.

-SNL is hit and miss at the best of times these days, but Bridgerton’s Regé-Jean Page certainly showed off his chops this weekend. He sang, he danced, he did accents, he smoldered. It was basically an audition reel for casting directors. I’m not mad about it.

-Here’s our first look at Claire Danes in Apple+’s Victorian-era drama series The Essex Serpent, based on the Sarah Perry novel.

Hope Davis is joining the Succession cast in season three. She’ll play Sandi Furness, not to be confused with her mom, Logan’s long-time rival, Sandy Furness.

-Meanwhile, Succession’s Nicholas Braun heard about Kim Kardashian‘s divorce filing and is shooting his shot. “Would you be down to meet a new person, totally just kind of different guy? One who could, you know, make you laugh a little bit or make you feel small cause he’s so tall.”

-This lawyer explained why Kris Jenner would have wanted to make it it clear in the press that Kim and Kanye separated days before Kanye’s class action suits were supposed to hit in January. And now the date of separation wasn’t listed in the divorce filing — because the press articles from January will be used to prove the date. That’s both diabolical and impressive.

Zack Snyder wanted to add a romance between Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne and Amy Adams’s Lois Lane in Justice League. “The intention was that Bruce fell in love with Lois and then realized that the only way to save the world was to bring Superman back.” I’m not sure what’s worse – the total misread of Bruce’s character, or using a female character as complex as Lois just to motivate a dude.

-Meanwhile, the final trailer is here.

-Modern Love season two is going to feature a ton of familiar faces, including Kit Harington, Anna Paquin, Minnie Driver and Garrett Hedlund.

-I really liked Nomadland but I understand the criticisms it’s getting, especially it’s oddly gentle treatment of Amazon and the gig labor economy.

-Netflix’s The Irregulars, about teens who assist Sherlock Holmes and Watson, premieres March 26. Here’s the first trailer.
