Golden Globes Best and Worst Dressed 2016

It was a weird night at the Golden Globes. The people we expected to kill it were disappointing, but there were still some favourites who continued to knock it out of the park. Here’s our look at our favourite and least favourite dresses of the night:

BEST

Jen: It’s got a peplum, it’s nearly backless and it has hip cutouts. On paper, Jennifer Lawrence’s dress sounds like it shouldn’t work. But wow, it’s stunning. I’m not totally sold on the hair, but otherwise, this is the best Dior has ever treated her.
Nicole: Its definitely better than most of the Dior over the last year but I wish the fit was better around the waist. Otherwise the colour and styling for JLaw are solid.

Nicole: There are a lot of first timers on the carpet who are flat-out nailing it. Blindspot’s Jaimie Alexander’s Genny gown is a gorgeous cut, and the colour is a standout.
Jen: Yup. I gave up on her show but I really like her as an actress, so I’m glad she’s killing it here.

Jen: I usually hate the princess-y look, but this Zac Posen dress on Gina Rodriguez is so very flattering. Love the colour, love the pockets, love the actress!
Nicole: Gina was on my long list for bests. The dress is amazingly flattering, the colour is so rich and she looks so beautiful.

Nicole: I love Jennifer Lopez’s Giambattista Valli gown and cape. It’s feminine, beautifully cut and she’s goddamn wearing the hell out of it. The colour is a risk, but the style is more subtle than we expect from her.
Jen: Everyone on Twitter loved this too but I’m not sold on it. I’ll forever associate a yellow gown with Michelle Williams’ (much better) one, and I think this look would have worked better if her gown was a sleek column underneath the cape.

Jen: I already know Nicole is going to fight me on this, but I love this Calvin Klein on Brie Larson. This is her big moment and she needed to make a splash, which this ab-tastic gladiator dress achieved in spades.
Nicole: Maybe I was just terrified of her abs? The colour was a little me-too but the fit was lovely. I hope she nails it on the Oscar red carpet.

Nicole: Mr Robot’s Portia Doubleday is it with this mirrored dress. The fit is exquisite and this is different than anything else on the carpet.
Jen: Agreed! This silver Naeem Khan almost looks futuristic, which fits with her show.

Jen: Liquid sex. That’s what Olivia Wilde’s red halter Michael Kors is. The fact that she’s pairing it with Aldo shoes makes it even better.
Nicole: I made some very inappropriate comments about Oscar Isaac earlier and the same comments apply to Olivia Wilde. So, so hot. Very well done.

Nicole: Our hometown girl Rachel McAdams stuns in Lanvin. The lip completes a simple but beautiful look.
Jen: Yup, she is definitely one of the best dressed of the night (and I think the only one who dared to do floral).

Nicole: Julianne Moore is stunning in her bestie’s navy sequin dress. The hair isn’t fussy or overdone; she looks quite simply glamorous.
Jen: I love this Tom Ford dress. It’s somehow both demure (she’s completely covered) but still really sexy.

Jen: I’ve got to say, it was really hard picking a fifth dress I liked because I was so unimpressed by this year’s red carpet, but Kate Winslet looked lovely in this halter Ralph Lauren, so she’ll do, I guess.
Nicole: It’s a lovely, predictable look for Winslet. She played it safe but it pays off.

WORST:

Nicole: What the holy god is this monstrosity on Kate Hudson? We get it…you exercise all the time. Eat a cracker and maybe indulge in a bit more material.
Jen: You know what was a bit weird? She’s super super super skinny but during a few points during her red carpet interview she looked…not. So screw that Michael Kors dress.

Jen: Because the Golden Globes has a history of recognizing little known WB/UPN/CW actresses, I had a hunch the Crazy Ex Girlfriend star would win (and she did). Which is why I wanted her to kill it on the red carpet, seeing as it was many people’s first introduction to her. But this dress did her no favours.
Nicole: She looked messy or sloppy? It’s really too bad because she’s so cute and funny.

Nicole: Jenna Dewan’s Zuhair Murad dress had great promise until I realized it’s essentially a sequin tornado design on the skirt of the dress. Yikes.
Jen: This dress reminded me of Viola Davis’. That’s not a good thing.

Jen: Another star who should have killed it on the red carpet because it’s her first big one is Saoirse Ronan, but I’m bored to tears by this pale Yves Saint Laurent Couture gown. Even if she’s just saving up the big guns for the Oscars, she’s young enough to have a lot more fun and be risky at the Globes.
Nicole: Agreed. This strategy of saving it up is garbage. Remember Lupita? There is such a thing as crushing it multiple times.

Nicole: I’m almost offended by Alicia Vikander’s blandness. Her Louis Vuitton is putting me to sleep.
Jen: Yeah, isn’t this supposed to be her year? She’s nominated for two awards and she shows up in this? Yawn.

Jen: Is Rooney Mara cosplaying as Miss Havisham? This drab yarn scrap mess of an Alexander McQueen dress, combined with her dour red carpet attitude, left me cold.
Nicole: TOO THIN. She looks cranky all the time. Maybe eat a bag of chips?

Nicole: I feel like Kate Bosworth’s Dolce and Gabbana dress might have been made in an atelier filled with blind couture artisans. Like that might have been a special selling feature. Their blindness.
Jen: Frankly, I’m still trying to figure out why she’s here. Does a Crackle series really count?

Jen: If anyone was entitled to have a little fun on the red carpet (and has the ‘tude to pull it off), it’s Taraji P. Henson. So why did she pick a white dress that’s both boring and unflattering? The only thing that saved it was her ridiculous try-hard posing.
Nicole: That feels like a theme… some of these worsts aren’t so much terrible as disappointing.

Nicole: Calista Flockheart is wearing my grade 9 prom dress. True story. I had mine custom made too! Twins!
Jen: This is terrible. They dress her so well on Supergirl; couldn’t she have just borrowed something from the set?

Jen: Nicole’s going to yell at me for this, but I hate Cate Blanchett’s shapeless pale Givenchy. I like that she tried something different, but different should also be flattering. Instead, her butt looks like it has a heart on it. She’s heart-butting.
Nicole: I saw the top of the dress and was all ready to hate it but when I saw the full dress, it somehow works together quite beautifully. I think it’s quite flattering without being skintight. I heart it. Cate is so damn crazy and cool.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler Play Sisters In New Movie Trailer

-Here’s a very short but very funny teaser for Tina Fey and Amy Poehler‘s new movie, in which they play grown siblings who decide to have one last rager in their parents’ house before it’s sold.

-God bless Tina and Amy for going out in a blaze of giving zero f*cks last night at the Golden Globes. Their Bill Cosby jokes were a thing of beauty. (I also loved the George Clooney dig, the “human woman” joke and “Chris Pine.”) You can watch their entire opening monologue here.

-Meanwhile, Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig made a great case for why they should host next year.

-The biggest Golden Globes mystery: what the hell was Ethan Hawke yelling at Matthew McConaughey about?

-At a Golden Globes after-party, Channing and Jenna Tatum did a synchronized dance routine to Beyonce, proving they are exactly the couple we want them to be.

George Clooney recycled his wedding tux at the Globes. Still hot.

-Speaking of Globes fashion, we recapped the best and worst Golden Globe dresses last night. Lots of champagne was consumed so forgive the typos…

-Also, Twitter did NOT react well to Jeremy Renner‘s tasteless joke about Jennifer Lopez‘s boobs when they were presenting. He later posted a “reminder to not take this shit so serious.” Charming.

Jake Gyllenhaal hung out with Ruth Wilson at an after-party, but there’s still no confirmation that they’re more than just friends. Can’t we just will this relationship into existence?

-At a pre-Globes party, Amber Heard and Johnny Depp proved they’re still going strong — in a really disgusting way.

-Speaking of gross couples, Katy Perry and John Mayer continue to get their reunion on.

-Aw man. I forgot that Marcia Gay Harden had been pulled into the 50 Shades vortex of suck.

Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell are starting rumours about a return to Prison Break on Fox. If they did it like the recent 24 resurrection, I’d be down for it. Plus, it would renew my love for Sarah Wayne Callies after The Walking Dead kinda killed it.

-Nice article on how The CW went from the brink of extinction to surprising success. It was the only broadcast network to take home a Golden Globe last night. (Also, if you want to see what all the fuss is about, the first two eps of Jane the Virgin are re-airing tonight. You won’t regret it!)

-Here’s another reason why it’s fun to be a fan of The CW: they just renewed every single one of their shows that aired this fall.

-Speaking of The CW, here’s the first trailer for  iZombie. I saw this pilot last summer and was totally charmed by it. It’s not perfect but you can tell it’s from the same guy who brought us Veronica Mars; it’s got a similar sassy spark.

Golden Globes Best and Worst Dressed 2015

Nicole and I drank a lot of champagne and watched the Golden Globes red carpet, which wasn’t as tragic as years past but there were still some definite hits and misses. Here’s our take:

BEST DRESSED:

Nicole: When I saw Kate Hudson in the most Versace of all Versace dresses, I wanted to front-piggyback her. True story. It’s just the right amount of trashy and I spent the rest of the night trying to catch pictures of how she sits down in that thing.
Jen: This is an unbelievably sexy dress. Usually I’m not a fan when presenters try to outshine nominees, but this was too great to deny.

Jen: As much as I love her, Anna Kendrick doesn’t always knock it out of the park on the red carpet, but this Monique Lhuillier was a home run. It was delicate, pretty and perfect for representing a Cinderella role.
Nicole: Finally!!

Nicole: I tend to enjoy Kerry Washington’s interesting choices and this Mary Katrantzou dress hits it perfectly for me. The length is great as is the fit and the colours shine against all the black and white on the carpet tonight.
Jen: You liked this one way more than I did. I liked that it was different, but I’m still not sold on the blue panels on the side.

Jen: Jessica Chastain’s Versace dress looked amazing on camera – all slinky with peeks of gold. It oozed sex appeal, which is not usually what I associate her with, so kudos.
Nicole: And her makeup was completely on point. That smokey eye crushed it.

Nicole: I’m so in love with Julianne Moore’s sexy, slinky silver and black Givenchy gown! It’s a real departure from the clean lines of the usual Tom Ford gowns she wears and she is outdressing lots of sexy young’uns tonight.
Jen: Agreed. I usually hate feather accents on dresses, but this one actually works for me because she’s so very hot in in!

Jen: Ok, I know that Ruth Wilson’s Prada isn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea. And also the fit isn’t perfect but damn, if I don’t kind of love this. She looks like she’s about to step onto the bridge of a spacecraft and jet off to a galaxy far, far away — and I dig it.
Nicole: You’re on your own with this one. HARD PASS!

Nicole: This feels like such a strong outing for Viola Davis. Her Donna Karen Atelier dress is elegant and just a bit whimsical with the colour giving her a fabulous glow.
Jen: Agreed. I may have given up on her show, but I still love her and am glad she continues to bring it on hard on the red carpet.

Jen: I love Felicity Jones’ Dior dress. She’s known for taking red carpet risks, and this colour and silhouette is different from anything else on the carpet.
Nicole: It’s pretty, but it’s kind of boring. I feel like it would be very appropriate for a wedding, not an awards show.

WORST DRESSED:

Jen: I love Amy Poehler and would give her my first born, but I would rather give her the name of a stylist. Her red carpet dress was a great colour, but so very unflattering. She fared better during the show, but this was a bad first impression to kick off the night.
Nicole: Is that an elastic waistband? Not great.

Nicole: What the hell, Emily Blunt and Rosamund Pike!? The Michael Kors and Vera Wang dresses are so similar and so terrible and not even a bit original. Blunt’s Kors is slightly better but I just think that they can both do so much better. Also, if they can manage to keep tweens out of the same prom dresses, can they not sort this out for award shows? Sigh.
Jen: I wasn’t a huge fan of all the pale dresses. Also, I know Rosamund just had a baby five weeks ago and wanted to show off her body (which looks a-mah-zing, btw), but this was oddly unflattering.

Jen: Did SNL’s Gilly pick Kristen Wiig’s outfit? How else to explain this peasant-top mess of a dress? I didn’t hate anything more than I hated this.
Nicole: She has a special talent for picking the worst outfit of the night, and this was no exception.

Nicole: Man alive, I loved so much of the Valentino collection this year and it always astonishes me that people as lovely as Claire Danes would fall into something so tragically unflattering with so many other great options.
Jen: She said this dress was like “wearing art,” and though I can understand what she means, I’m not sure that it translates on camera. It’s a bit of a mess.

Jen: Kirsten Wiig wasn’t the only one with a terrible peasant neckline. Chanel did wrong by Keira Knightley by sticking her in this. It’s too bad, because I love the print.
Nicole: Why Chanel, why?

Nicole: Lupita Nyong’o, did you cash in all your favours last year? This chest-flower exploding Giambattisa Valli is not good. I judge it more harshly because it’s you.
Jen: Agreed, it’s never a good sign when it looks like a florist puked on your chest. It sucks even harder because we expect so much better from her.

Jen: I felt like most people on this red carpet needed a necklace, but no one more so than Maggie Gyllenhaal. If you’re going for the droopy, strapless and wrinkled look, at least accessorize, goddamit!
Nicole: I don’t know — I expect so little from Maggie that this delivered as perfectly mediocre.

NOTABLES:

Jen: There were a lot of chilly grays on the red carpet tonight, which I didn’t hate, but all could have been greatly improved with a dark lip, especially Diane Kruger and Amy Adams.
Nicole: Agreed, I was underwhelmed by both dresses.

Nicole: I loved Lena Dunham’s playful red asymmetrical Zac Posen despite the poor fit. Her hair and makeup were perfect and she looked like she was having so much fun.
Jen: Yeah, it kind of fell apart under scrutiny but I like how polished it is compared to her usual red carpet look.

Jen: This was Amal Clooney’s very first red carpet, so I was kind of hoping to be more blown away than I was. Basic black is classy and expected, but at least she gave us a bit of a twist with the white gloves. But were they supposed to be so slouchy?
Nicole: I LOVE THIS! She was elegant and haughty. Also, what amazing root lifter is she using on her hair? Honestly, hook some sisters up.

Nicole: Emma Stone’s Lanvin pantsuit was so pretty and it reminded me of the spirit of the Emma Watson pantsuit from last year’s Globes. I love a good sparkly pantsuit.
Jen: I wasn’t in love with this, but Emma Stone can do no wrong in my books so she gets an automatic pass.
