Kate Winslet On This Year’s Uncertain Awards Season

–Kate Winslet, back in the awards race with same-sex romance Ammonite, covers THR and talks about choreographing her own sex scenes with Saoirse Ronan (“[Director] Francis [Lee] was naturally very nervous. And I just said to him, ‘Listen, let us work it out.’ And we did. ‘We’ll start here. We’ll do this with the kissing, boobs, you go down there, then you do this, then you climb up here.’ I mean, we marked out the beats of the scene so that we were anchored in something that just supported the narrative. Jamie Lynn Spears, who was selected as trustee of the pop superstar’s estate two years ago, is seeking more control over the performer’s fortune. Meanwhile, Spears’ father submitted additional documentation to continue the conservatorship, including checking a box that indicates the singer is unable handle her finances.

-My goodness. More powerful Hollywood men have been named as having been involved with the actress Charlotte Kirk.

–Thandie Newton said she was “surprised by the appreciation” she got after speaking candidly about what it’s like working with Tom Cruise. “I have nothing to lose because I could just then not get hired, which is kind of normal for people in my generation anyway. So I’ve got nothing to lose and I would rather go out using this moment.”

–Gabrielle Union and Kirsten Dunst reunited virtually with director Peyton Reed and writer Jessica Bendinger to celebrate the 20 year anniversary of Bring It On.

–Louis C.K. donated to Joe Biden’s campaign; Biden gave it back.

–Halle Berry has dropped her lawyer and is now representing herself in her divorce proceedings with Olivier Martinez. This seems…misguided.

-Alias costar Kevin Weisman posted some very cute old photos of the cast have a pre-awards show party in 2002.

-It’s really interesting to see how US-based movie publications are handling film reviews these days. Collider just posted: “To publish reviews without any awareness of the current landscape can be seen as an implicit endorsement of attending the theater. That would be putting our readership’s health in jeopardy, and we don’t want to do that.”

-Meanwhile, Variety interviewed Christopher Nolan stans who are taking flights just to see Tenet.

-I really like this idea of using empty major league baseball fields to screen movies, but Warner Bros and or Nolan won’t even let Tenet screen at drive-ins in cities where theatres are still closed, so good luck with that.

-If you want to see the Dune trailer, you actually have to go to the movies. It’s currently only showing in front of Tenet, but isn’t expected to premiere online until Sept 9. Seriously, what is Warner Bros doing?!?

-Good news for One Day at a Time fans. The series, which was picked up by Pop after being cancelled on Netflix, will now also air on CBS.

-Altered Carbon has been canceled by Netflix after — you guessed it! — two seasons. They’re not even pretending their shows will last longer than 2-3 seasons anymore, huh?

-Stranger Things’ kiddo Noah Schnapp denies using the n-word while singing along to a song.

-I caught up on I May Destroy You’s season finale (which aired on HBO on Monday but a few months ago in the UK) and oh my god. If you have HBO or Crave, it’s so worth watching. It’s been a while since a show got me so jazzed that I immediately looked up all the think pieces as soon as it ended. No wonder celebrities like Janelle Monae, Seth Rogen, Adele, and Jane Fonda have been raving about it.

-I also appreciated this piece on I May Destroy You’s similarities with HBO’s other devastating new show about the power of narrative, I’ll Be Gone In the Dark.

-A shy teen makes music with a band of ghosts in the trailer for Netflix’s new musical Julie and the Phantoms.

-Quarantine comedies are the latest thing. HBO’s Coastal Elites features Sarah Paulson, Bette Midler, Kaitlyn Dever, Dan Levy and Issa Rae. Meanwhile, a bunch of familiar faces show up in the trailer for Netflix’s remotely shot anthology series Social Distance.

-Here’s the trailer for Sundance hit The Forty-Year-Old Version. Writer, director and actress Radha Blank won the Vanguard Award for her comedy about a once-promising playwright who turns to hip-hop.

Ansel Elgort’s Very Bad Day

–Ansel Elgort is trending in response to an Instagram post which appears to accuse the actor of making racial slurs in high school, and a Tweet from a woman who claims he sexually assaulted her when she was 17.

-Remember his really odd GQ interview from a few years back? “Girls love it when you have some weird nerdy thing in your room. It makes you look less threatening, even though I’m, like, very threatening. I’m the most threatening guy ever.”

-In this Nicole Beharie interview in the NYT, she talks about how Sleepy Hollow mistreated her. “My co-star and I both got sick at the same time with the same illness and had different treatments. He was allowed to go on leave for a month and I had to continue working.” She was forced to work through it and ended up developing the autoimmune condition C. difficile. I remember loving the first season and being outraged that she, the co-lead, was clearly being punted to the background in favour of a white woman in the later seasons. She added, “Sometimes I think that some people I was working with didn’t like that I was unwell but loved by the audience. I would think they’d support that. But everyone of color on that show was seen as expendable and eventually let go. I tried to get work afterwards and people were like, “We heard you were difficult.” But no one can say I was late or unprofessional or negative.”

-During an interview on Watch What Happens Live, former Bachelorette Rachel Lindsay spoke about her experience as the first Black lead of a show in the Bachelor franchise: “I did have a racist contestant on my season.”

–Taylor Swift is speaking out again, this time to say Juneteenth should be a national holiday.

–Gabrielle Union claims that her agent was threatened after she spoke out about the working conditions on America’s Got Talent.

-The Friends reunion special is now expected to film in August. I honestly can’t imagine how they’re going ahead with this when we’ve spent the last three months drowning in reunions for charity.

–Will Smith joined wife Jada Pinkett Smith for an honest Father’s Day talk on Red Table Talk. “The idea being that just because a man might not be the best husband, does not mean he isn’t a good father.”

-Mr. Malcolm’s List, a diverse regency-era drama which first debuted as a short film from director/producer Emma Holly Jones earlier this year, will be expanded into a feature-length movie starring Constance Wu and Sam Heughan. Gemma Chan, Sope Dirisu, and Freida Pinto starred in the original short, which is a DELIGHT.

-AMC’s CEO said yesterday that the theatre chain won’t be enforcing mask-wearing when they reopen in July because they “did not want to be drawn into a political controversy.” They quickly reversed their decision following the backlash, but if they’re letting people take their masks off to eat, I can’t imagine it’ll be enforced.

–Cardi B’s Sam Smith “remix” is hilarious — and a million times better than the original.

–Noname responded to J. Cole in a new track.

-This is a very interesting take on how Love, Victor, a 10-episode Hulu spin-off of the 2018 film Love Simon, is caught up in the mythology of white gayness.

–Sir Ian Holm, known for roles in Lord of the Rings and Alien, has died at age 88 following a battle with Parkinson’s disease. I’l always rememeber him from The Sweet Hereafter.

–Jimmy Kimmel is taking the summer off to “spend even more time” with his family. His longtime frenemy Matt Damon helped him make the announcement.

Daniel Craig Covers GQ

–Daniel Craig is on the new issue of GQ, and did we all know he was working with this? He’s 52! My goodness.

–Justin Beiber‘s tour ticket sales have been so sluggish, he’s had to downsize a number of venues.

–Prince Harry and Megan Markle finished their week of royal duties at a Commonwealth Day service, and Prince William and Kate appeared to keep their distance. In particular, this video seems to show a snub.

-I liked Harry and Megan‘s coordinated green outfits, (though I do agree that the fit of her dress could be better). I prefered the red dress she wore this weekend.

-Asked about Prince Andrew‘s initial offer of cooperation in the Jeffrey Epstein case, U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman says the royal has “completely shut the door on any voluntary cooperation” and his office is “considering our options.”

–Elizabeth Warren and Kate McKinnon did the best “drop the flip switch” challenge yet.

–Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas continue to get spotted together.

-It’s actually kind of shocking that this is the first time Goran Visnjic (ER, Practical Magic) has been cast as Dracula.

–DaBaby apologized on Instagram after hitting a woman in the crowd of an afterparty.

-Lost’s Evangeline Lilly opened up about a”rough” time last year in an Instagram post: “I didn’t want to share all of it with you because i didn’t want to be a dark cloud in your world…I struggle deeply with feeling that all I ever am is what I feel everyone else wants and needs me to be. I often feel alone and unseen.”

-The full Allure cover story on the Dixie Chicks is now available online, and in it the writer says “I am meeting the Dixie Chicks to not discuss their new album, Gaslighter. It is their first in 14 years, but due to ongoing legal disputes, we cannot talk about it.” The legal dispute likely refers to what’s going on between Natalie Maines and Heroes star Adrian Pasdar, whose divorced was finalized in Dec but are still fighting about the confidentiality clause in the the prenuptial agreement.

–Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union continue to be wonderful parents.

-Modern Family’s Ed O’Neill was on Ellen, where he told a funny story about always embarrassing his teen daughters by introducing them to celebrities he’s never met, so his daughter refused to meet Leonardo DiCaprio — who he actually knows.

–Ellen Pompeo and T.R. Knight reunited the day after Alex shocker on Grey’s. I bet they had some catching up to do.

-I can’t believe I watched the entire season of The Outsiders and had no clue that last night’s finale (which wasn’t very good) would include an important post-credits scene. HBO has got to stop doing that.

-Between Stephen King lamenting Hachette’s choice to “muzzle” Woody Allen, and Bill Maher defending Chris Matthews, it’s probably a good time to remind everyone that rich white dudes aren’t automatically entitled to lucrative publishing and TV contracts.

-These PS I Still Love You bloopers are very cute.

–Lil Yachty dressed up like Oprah to interview Drake in their new music video.

-The new trailer for Black Widow (which is still slated to come out May 1…for now) looks great and makes me even angrier about Natasha’s fate in Endgame.
