Phoebe Waller-Bridge Talks Taking Over Hollywood

phoebe_waller-bridge_thr

Phoebe Waller-Bridge is on the cover of THR, talking about her secret new movie (“The day I wrapped ‘Fleabag,’ I went to bed thinking, ‘I’m never going to have another idea again. Oh shit.’ I woke up with the vision of this film”), and being hired to punch up the script for the upcoming Bond film (“A lot has been made of me coming on board because I’m a woman, and that’s wonderful. But also I can’t take credit for the movie that was written. It’s [director] Cary [Joji Fukunaga]’s movie”). Also, I had no idea she’s dating Three Billboards filmmaker Martin McDonagh.

-People mag is quoting a source close to Miley Cyrus who says that there’s a possibility that she might reunite with Liam Hemsworth. “They both agreed it’s better to spend time apart, but this doesn’t mean their relationship is completely over.”

-Here’s photos of Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost kissing during a beachside stroll in the Hamptons, just in case you were worried that they weren’t living their most smug best lives.

Gwyneth Paltrow and Brad Falchuk were also spotted on a Hamptons stroll. Is there nothing else to do there?

-Here’s Oprah and Gayle King being quizzed on the meaning of internet slang like “snack” and “thicc.” The fact that Oprah immediately tries to use each word in a sentence as soon as she learns what it mean is precious.

A$AP Rocky has been found guilty in Sweden but will serve no more jail time.

-So I guess those blind items about a starlet who made a deal with Pornhub were about Bella Thorne.

This thread about this season of The Handmaid’s Tale pretty much sums up my feelings on it. I gave up halfway through but tuned back in for the finale and though I thought the last episode was effective, it didn’t make up for the meandering season.

-This is Netflix’s next cheesy romcom with possibly the worst title I’ve ever seen and I’m super here for it.

-There was an OC cast reunion at the airport this week.

-This deep dive into Jeremy Renner’s ridiculous Jeep commercials is just what I needed this week.

-We’re getting more info behind Universal’s decision to scrap The Hunt. Apparently execs and the filmmakers received death threats, and the studio’s internal security got involved. It was still a bad call, IMO.

-Forget those rumours that Anna Wintour is leaving Vogue. Not only is she staying, she’s getting a promotion. Anyone else getting some ‘third act of Devil Wears Prada’ maneuvering vibes?

-This clip of Kate McKinnon, who plays Ruth Bader Ginsburg on SNL, meeting her last night is cute.

-Marc Cherry’s soapy new CBS drama Why Women Kill, starring Lucy Liu and Ginnifer Goodwin, is getting good reviews.

-This is an interesting look on how Netflix will have to change its strategy soon. Between them refusing to give critics screeners for Mindhunter’s new season, and cancelling Tuca and Bertie (which a lot of people didn’t even know existed, even though it starred Tiffany Haddish and was from the Bojack creators), something’s gotta give. I’ve noticed they’ve started a weekly “what’s new this week” show on social media so things don’t get lost in the shuffle, but the fact that I recently watched the last season of Bojack and the algorithm didn’t even prompt me to watch Tuca and Bertie is a problem.

-2 Dope Queens star Phoebe Robinson just landed her own Comedy Central interview show. I recently went to a screening of Magic Mike XXL that she moderated, and she deserves all the good things.

-Here’s the trailer for Bong Joon-ho’s Palme d’Or winning film, Parasite. I really hope this comes to TIFF. All I’ve heard about it is that you should go in knowing as little as possible because the end will blow your mind.

-Here’s the Last Christmas trailer, directed by Paul Feig and starring Emilia Clarke, Henry Golding and Emma Thompson. Look, I’ve been anxiously awaiting this film since they first announced it, but this trailer has me (and pretty much the entire romance-reading population) thinking he’s going to end up being a ghost or an angel, and I’m not here for that.

Riverdale’s Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart Split

Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart split

-Riverdale’s Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart have broken up following two years of dating — for now.

-In happier Hollywood couple news, Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix are engaged after being together for three years.

-So that was how this season of Big Little Lies wrapped, huh? Huh.

Emma Thompson getting day-drunk with Hannah Gatsby and doing the robot for the paps is a mood.

-This was poetic: Avengers: Endgame passed Avatar to become the biggest movie in history at the same moment Marvel was on the Comic-Con stage presenting Phase 4. (Which sounds awesome, btw. So happy for Simu Liu from CBC’s Kim’s Convenience, and tickled that dudes are so upset about Natalie Portman playing Thor.)

-The movie side of Comic-Con felt really subdued, but there was a TON of TV news and trailers.

-I didn’t expect Comic-Con to make me emotional, but the panels for shows that are ending got to me. The Supernatural dudes teared up, Arrow’s Stephen Amell teared up, The Good Place’s Kristen Bell teared up. Dammit, feelings!

-The three Andrew Lincoln-led Walking Dead movies will no longer air on AMC; they’ll be released exclusively in theaters. Do people still like this franchise enough to spend movie money on it?!

-It’s odd that HBO thought it would be a good idea to have a Game of Thrones panel at Comic-Con. Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss bailed, but lots of the cast showed up. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau got some boos from the audience when he said he thought it made sense for Jamie to die in the arms of Cersei.

Rose Leslie is exiting The Good Fight, which makes sense because last season it was like she was on a completely different show.

-Oof, that Veronica Mars season. I loved it right up until until I didn’t. No spoilers but female characters don’t need to be tortured and miserable to be “strong” or worth rooting for. It’s straight out of the Joss Whedon handbook and we should have moved past this shit by now.

-Showrunner Rob Thomas is giving interviews about the big twist, and said “It is a gamble. If we never get to do Veronica Mars again because the fans turned on the show… then I placed a large bet and lost it.” It’s poses an interesting question, though. I don’t think creators owe fans anything (even if their work is fan-funded), but I also don’t think fans own creators their continued loyalty if they do something they know the fans will hate. This move just pissed off what is very likely their most vocal, fervent fans (the ones, I would argue, who were largely responsible for resurrecting the show). What will it look like if a lot of those fans wash their hands of it?

-Also, his defense is that it’s a “noir” show, which falls apart if you look at the tropes of noir.

-Good on Tina Majorino (who played Mac) for clarifying that she didn’t come back for the new Veronica Mars season not because of scheduling conflicts, but because of her character’s “diminished value.”

Cate Blanchett showed up at a drag brunch in Toronto this weekend. Dammit, I’m going to that on Sunday. Just one week off!

-Here’s the first new trailer for A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, a movie about Mr. Rogers, played by Tom Hanks.

TV Stars Strike a Pose for Vanity Fair

vanity-fair-emmys

-My god, the photos and GIFs in Vanity Fair’s Emmy spread are *scrumptious*! The shoot features Sophie Turner, Bill Hader, Dan Levy, Mandy Moore, Natasha Lyonne, Kieran Culkin, Tony Hale, Jharrel Jerome, Gina Rodriguez, and Regina Hall.

-Variety’s Actors on Actors interviews continue to roll out. In the lateset, Michelle Williams and Patricia Clarkson talk how TV has evolved since Dawsons Creek, Emilia Clarke tells Regina Hall that she had to be sewn into her Game of Thrones costumes, and Don Cheadle asks Sacha Baron Cohen of his stunt interviews with politicians “How do get past their team? How aren’t you vetted properly?”

-Television critics are calling Miley Cryus‘ episode of Black Mirror one of the worst in the franchise’s history, which makes me really, really want to watch it.

-Jezebel published a shitty clickbait article about actors who are bad (with no context for their argument — it’s just a list!). I like this thread disputing some of their most egregious inclusions. I’m not going to fight anyone over Ashton Kutcher or Mark Wahlberg, but Brie Larson? Gwyneth Paltrow? Amy freakin’ Adams??!?

Mindy Kaling pronounces ‘charcuterie’ in a really cute way.

-In a lengthy IG post, Madonna pushed back on that recent that New York Times profile, writing “To say that I was disappointed in the article would be an understatement.” She wrote that she “felt raped” by the experience, adding “And yes I’m allowed to use that analogy having been raped at the age of 19.” (Um, are you though??) I didn’t love the way the profile was handled and the constant mentions of her age were overkill, but I do think that the fact that she’s 60 and trying to stay contemporary is a relevant topic to explore.

-It’s still one year until Wonder Woman 1984 comes out, but since DC isn’t going to ComicCon Patty Jenkins decided to throw us a bone by revealing Diana’s bitchin’ new look.

-The review embargo for Big Little Lies season 2 was just lifted, and the majority of reviews are pretty positive, with almost everyone gushing about Meryl Streep’s performance.

-Speaking of BLL, I just did a Summer TV Preview and man I’ve gotta start watching TV again. There’s so much coming!

Brad Pitt has ordered those ridiculous Straight Pride parade organizers to cease using his name and image.

Halle Berry doesn’t remember much about her Oscar win: “”Very shortly after I got that statue, I became inebriated to the point that the whole night is awash.”

Emma Thompson doesn’t have a lot of time for guys whining about how they don’t know how to act in the age of Me Too: “Get a grip guys, it’s not rocket science. You just behave with respect and courtesy. Now shut up and get on with it.”

-The rumbles of trouble in paradise for Bradley Cooper and Irina Shayk continue to get louder.

Tig Notaro has a new webseries where she interviews celebrities — and she has no idea who they are. The James Vanderbeek one is great.

Michelle Williams, Julianne Moore and Billy Crudup star in the After the Wedding trailer.
