BEST DRESSED:

I have such a crush on Gina Rodriguez (and not just because she did an Instagram story earlier today about doing chin-ups while getting ready), so I was praying she would come to play. And boy, did she ever with this webby red number. Slay, queen!

Lea Michele‘s Elie Saab dress is just the latest of the past few red carpets that is making me rethink my “I don’t like Elie Saab dresses” stance.  I wish her hair wasn’t so flat, but otherwise this is a great look for a presenter. Pretty and flattering without being spotlight-stealing.

Viola Davis offered a jolt of orange in this bright custom Zac Posen dress. I mean, at this point she could probably wear anything and I’d love it, but this is a stunner.

I already know that some of you are going to be disagree but Tessa Thompson is probably my fave of the night. This shimmering, rainbow Rosie Assoulin dress took my breath away. The way it moved on camera was stunning. After toiling for years on TV, she’s about to take over the world in the new Thor movie and I, for one, can’t wait.

Another dress we are sure to fight about is Zoe Kravitz‘s feathery Dior. I’m not sure I would dig this on anyone else, but the Big Little Lies star somehow makes it work.

WORST DRESSED:

Reese Witherspoon looks like that woman in a romcom who’s planning to surprise her boyfriend by showing up to his office wearing a trenchcoat and nothing else — but then she ends up walking into his meeting and embarrassing herself. Much like I feel she is doing here…

This should be Carrie Coon‘s night. She basically reigned over prestige TV this year with incredible performances in The Leftovers and Fargo. So why didn’t she seize the moment and slay the red carpet instead of opting for this droopy, forgettable Delpozo Resort gown?

I don’t think Issa Rae is one of the worst dressed of the night, but she made my list because she was *thisclose* to being the best. The colour is perfect, the hair is great, the makeup is on point, but the cut of this Vera Wang just doesn’t work. Those arm bands make it seem unfinished, or like someone tore off pieces of it before pushing her onto the carpet.

Keri Russell is very dramatic in a black feathered gown, but much like the last season of her show The Americans, I wanted something more. Just ok doesn’t cut it.

Much like Carrie Coon, this has been Mandy Moore‘s year. After countless failed pilots, she finally (finally!) became a TV star by landing a leading role on the only network show to break through last year. So this should have been a triumphant Emmy appearance, but the white tier on the skirt of her Carolina Herrera dress is really failing her here.

Best and Worst Dresses at the 2016 Oscars

Most of the Oscar dresses left us a little  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯  (so much so that Nicole and I could only find four dresses each for our Best list). But our worst list? Gurl, brew a pot of tea and settle in because we have *thoughts*.

BEST

Jen: Not everyone’s going to like Cate Blanchett’s green Armani. It’s a risk, and that’s why we love her. It’s a bit too “fashion-y” for my personal taste, but she’s the only one who could make it work – and she does.
Nicole: She’s on trend with green but the seafoam stands out. I agree that Cate is one of the few who could wear this without it overpowering.

Nicole: Finally, Saoirse Ronan. It’s about damn time! At least someone in the Best Actress category dressed like a goddamn winner. This dress follows the classic Calvin silhouette but looks like liquid emeralds on Saoirse.
Jen: I’m so happy about this one! She’s sexy, she’s representing Ireland with the colour, and she’s being age-appropriately playful with the mismatched earrings and killer back.

Jen: It’s so hard to pull off red on a red carpet, but Charlize Theron is killing it in Dior. I’m not sure I would have agreed to the giant boob grazing necklace, but she’s making it work.
Nicole: It’s simple, sexy and everything we would expect from Charlize.

Nicole: When I saw Naomi Watts hit the red carpet in her Armani Prive dress I thought two things: 1. Wowza, that’s hot; she nailed the dress, the Bulgari necklace and the slash of red lipstick. 2. Jen’s gonna want to be buried in that dress.
Jen: You know me too well! Sometimes we play the “what designer would we choose for a red carpet if we inexplicably became famous?”, and Armani Prive is always at the top of my list. This dress perfectly exemplifies why.

Jen: Tina Fey always plays it safe and classy, and this dress is no different but that doesn’t make it any less lovely. Another plus: she totally beat Reese Witherspoon in the strapless purple dress contest!
Nicole: Tina’s last few red carpets have been sexier and more confident than usual and this gown fits that new style really well.

Nicole: Margot Robbie looks like a gorgeous Oscar statue in her snakeskin print Tom Ford gown. Her loose, tussled hair is on trend and that clutch is to die for (birthday gift idea!?).
Jen: I was a little ‘meh’ on this one. Yeah, the dress is slinky and the long sleeves are a nice change of pace, but she couldn’t have run a brush through her hair?

Jen: I think Mindy Kaling’s Elizabeth Kennedy dress is incredibly flattering and the blue almost gives it the illusion of a cape, making it one of my favourite showings from her ever.
Nicole: I generally love Mindy for her colour and brilliant style but this was too sedate for me.

Nicole: I’m so very relieved to see Kate Winslet in a new style after endless red carpets in what felt like the same dress over and over. This Ralph Lauren custom is flattering to Kate’s curves and the liquid material is sexier than we’re used to on her. It’s a great departure for her.
Jen: You like this one way more than I do. In some angles it looks like liquid sex, but in others it looks like a garbage bag.

WORST

Nicole: Well, I didn’t have great hopes for Brie Larson‘s dress and as such was not disappointed. Her blue Gucci gown was actually terrific right up until just past her stunning belt and then the weird fluttery bits made it a miss.
Jen: I had huge hopes, so I’m crushed. I love the colour, but she lost me at the terrible length and the weird pleated, ruffled skirt. Her makeup is on point, though.

Jen: God, I was praying for Rachel McAdams to kill it tonight and I got so hopeful when I first got a glimpse of the colour, but then I saw the wrinkles and puckered seams and now I’m totally bummed out.
Nicole: She had a great season and I’m sad it ended with this dress as it just didn’t show her at her best.

Nicole: Man, there were some broke-ass dresses tonight. It felt like Alicia Vikander was on a roll with her last Louis Vuitton but this lemony disaster was infuriating. How do you end up in this dress as a nominee on the Oscar red carpet? How?
Jen: The yellow is a decent colour but I want to cut off the hem, bury it in a deep, deep hole and salt the earth.

Jen: The bodice on Julianne Moore’s boring black Chanel dress looks boxy and is separating her breasts in a weird way.
Nicole: Can you imagine if Julianne had worn Margot Robbie’s Tom Ford dress instead?

Nicole: I’ve HAD IT with these dresses that look all daring with their mega cut outs and sexy skin-baring designs, then we get close up and it’s just another figure skating dress. I’m talking about you, Olivia Wilde. If you’re going to wear that Valentino dress, get some double sided tape and go J-Lo style.
Jen: Yup, can suspender dresses just be over already?

Jen: I’m so bored by Jennifer Garner’s dress. This should have been her big post-divorce coming out moment, but she played it safe in a black Versace dress I feel like I’ve seen on her before. Bless her heart.
Nicole: This is not a phoenix dress. Too bad, she could’ve really lit it up.

https://twitter.com/IAMFASHlON/status/704099911390859264

Nicole: I’m so bored, so tired of Rooney Mara‘s nude coloured dresses. Her Givenchy looks too similar to her McQueen dress from the Golden Globes. Yawn.
Jen: It looks like she’s wearing a doily. Also, this girl does not need any help seeming severe, so her tight hairstyle isn’t doing her any favours.

Jen: This is Star Wars actress Daisy Ridley’s very first Oscar red carpet, and she chooses to celebrate by wearing a blah Chanel dress with a weird floaty dust ruffle? And if that weren’t bad enough, her shoes. Dear lord, her shoes!
Nicole: Oh man, so many beautiful options and this is where we end up? I honestly could’ve slept through this.

Nicole: Really, Lady Gaga? You had the choice of five gowns and that’s what you chose? After a run of really beautiful ensembles, I’m bummed that she ended up in this white Brandon Maxwell pantdress on the carpet that matters most.
Jen: My eyes haven’t even taken in the pants part of it yet because I can’t tear them away from the ill-fitting chest area. It looks like she has boob pockets!

Jen: I love Amy Poehler so much that she could basically wear a curtain and I’d still be crushing on her. But damn, I wish she hadn’t tried to test that theory.
Nicole: What the what, Poehler?! A caftan? Unacceptable.

Golden Globes Best and Worst Dressed 2016

It was a weird night at the Golden Globes. The people we expected to kill it were disappointing, but there were still some favourites who continued to knock it out of the park. Here’s our look at our favourite and least favourite dresses of the night:

BEST

Jen: It’s got a peplum, it’s nearly backless and it has hip cutouts. On paper, Jennifer Lawrence’s dress sounds like it shouldn’t work. But wow, it’s stunning. I’m not totally sold on the hair, but otherwise, this is the best Dior has ever treated her.
Nicole: Its definitely better than most of the Dior over the last year but I wish the fit was better around the waist. Otherwise the colour and styling for JLaw are solid.

Nicole: There are a lot of first timers on the carpet who are flat-out nailing it. Blindspot’s Jaimie Alexander’s Genny gown is a gorgeous cut, and the colour is a standout.
Jen: Yup. I gave up on her show but I really like her as an actress, so I’m glad she’s killing it here.

Jen: I usually hate the princess-y look, but this Zac Posen dress on Gina Rodriguez is so very flattering. Love the colour, love the pockets, love the actress!
Nicole: Gina was on my long list for bests. The dress is amazingly flattering, the colour is so rich and she looks so beautiful.

Nicole: I love Jennifer Lopez’s Giambattista Valli gown and cape. It’s feminine, beautifully cut and she’s goddamn wearing the hell out of it. The colour is a risk, but the style is more subtle than we expect from her.
Jen: Everyone on Twitter loved this too but I’m not sold on it. I’ll forever associate a yellow gown with Michelle Williams’ (much better) one, and I think this look would have worked better if her gown was a sleek column underneath the cape.

Jen: I already know Nicole is going to fight me on this, but I love this Calvin Klein on Brie Larson. This is her big moment and she needed to make a splash, which this ab-tastic gladiator dress achieved in spades.
Nicole: Maybe I was just terrified of her abs? The colour was a little me-too but the fit was lovely. I hope she nails it on the Oscar red carpet.

Nicole: Mr Robot’s Portia Doubleday is it with this mirrored dress. The fit is exquisite and this is different than anything else on the carpet.
Jen: Agreed! This silver Naeem Khan almost looks futuristic, which fits with her show.

Jen: Liquid sex. That’s what Olivia Wilde’s red halter Michael Kors is. The fact that she’s pairing it with Aldo shoes makes it even better.
Nicole: I made some very inappropriate comments about Oscar Isaac earlier and the same comments apply to Olivia Wilde. So, so hot. Very well done.

Nicole: Our hometown girl Rachel McAdams stuns in Lanvin. The lip completes a simple but beautiful look.
Jen: Yup, she is definitely one of the best dressed of the night (and I think the only one who dared to do floral).

Nicole: Julianne Moore is stunning in her bestie’s navy sequin dress. The hair isn’t fussy or overdone; she looks quite simply glamorous.
Jen: I love this Tom Ford dress. It’s somehow both demure (she’s completely covered) but still really sexy.

Jen: I’ve got to say, it was really hard picking a fifth dress I liked because I was so unimpressed by this year’s red carpet, but Kate Winslet looked lovely in this halter Ralph Lauren, so she’ll do, I guess.
Nicole: It’s a lovely, predictable look for Winslet. She played it safe but it pays off.

WORST:

https://twitter.com/MichaelKors/status/686355881718616064/photo/1
Nicole: What the holy god is this monstrosity on Kate Hudson? We get it…you exercise all the time. Eat a cracker and maybe indulge in a bit more material.
Jen: You know what was a bit weird? She’s super super super skinny but during a few points during her red carpet interview she looked…not. So screw that Michael Kors dress.

Jen: Because the Golden Globes has a history of recognizing little known WB/UPN/CW actresses, I had a hunch the Crazy Ex Girlfriend star would win (and she did). Which is why I wanted her to kill it on the red carpet, seeing as it was many people’s first introduction to her. But this dress did her no favours.
Nicole: She looked messy or sloppy? It’s really too bad because she’s so cute and funny.

https://twitter.com/ForbesLife/status/686350915914326016/photo/1
Nicole: Jenna Dewan’s Zuhair Murad dress had great promise until I realized it’s essentially a sequin tornado design on the skirt of the dress. Yikes.
Jen: This dress reminded me of Viola Davis’. That’s not a good thing.

Jen: Another star who should have killed it on the red carpet because it’s her first big one is Saoirse Ronan, but I’m bored to tears by this pale Yves Saint Laurent Couture gown. Even if she’s just saving up the big guns for the Oscars, she’s young enough to have a lot more fun and be risky at the Globes.
Nicole: Agreed. This strategy of saving it up is garbage. Remember Lupita? There is such a thing as crushing it multiple times.

https://twitter.com/Fashionista_com/status/686335985462853632/photo/1
Nicole: I’m almost offended by Alicia Vikander’s blandness. Her Louis Vuitton is putting me to sleep.
Jen: Yeah, isn’t this supposed to be her year? She’s nominated for two awards and she shows up in this? Yawn.

Jen: Is Rooney Mara cosplaying as Miss Havisham? This drab yarn scrap mess of an Alexander McQueen dress, combined with her dour red carpet attitude, left me cold.
Nicole: TOO THIN. She looks cranky all the time. Maybe eat a bag of chips?

https://twitter.com/ELLEmagazine/status/686345194896277504/photo/1
Nicole: I feel like Kate Bosworth’s Dolce and Gabbana dress might have been made in an atelier filled with blind couture artisans. Like that might have been a special selling feature. Their blindness.
Jen: Frankly, I’m still trying to figure out why she’s here. Does a Crackle series really count?

Jen: If anyone was entitled to have a little fun on the red carpet (and has the ‘tude to pull it off), it’s Taraji P. Henson. So why did she pick a white dress that’s both boring and unflattering? The only thing that saved it was her ridiculous try-hard posing.
Nicole: That feels like a theme… some of these worsts aren’t so much terrible as disappointing.

https://twitter.com/TheFashionCourt/status/686355272911159296/photo/1
Nicole: Calista Flockheart is wearing my grade 9 prom dress. True story. I had mine custom made too! Twins!
Jen: This is terrible. They dress her so well on Supergirl; couldn’t she have just borrowed something from the set?

Jen: Nicole’s going to yell at me for this, but I hate Cate Blanchett’s shapeless pale Givenchy. I like that she tried something different, but different should also be flattering. Instead, her butt looks like it has a heart on it. She’s heart-butting.
Nicole: I saw the top of the dress and was all ready to hate it but when I saw the full dress, it somehow works together quite beautifully. I think it’s quite flattering without being skintight. I heart it. Cate is so damn crazy and cool.
