Constance Wu Steps Into the Spotlight

–Constance Wu’s cover of Time is fabulous (and it makes me even more sad that fashion magazines didn’t snatch her up for their Sept issues). The accompanying article by Karen K Ho is also great. Ho also tweeted some tidbits that didn’t make it into the article, including the fact that Wu specifically asked her publicist for Asian-American women to interview her as much as possible, because she wanted to create more opportunities.

-I really liked this article about Crazy Rich Asians from the perspective of an Asian American. (Speaking of which, Vox’s Today Explained podcast made me tear up this morning.)

-This is a great interview with Lana Condor, the lead of To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. (I can’t believe this movie is bringing back scrunchies, though.)

-Whoa, what happened with Ruth Wilson and The Affair? I stopped watching a couple of seasons ago (even the lure of Joshua Jackson couldn’t tempt me), but I heard about the big twist from two weeks ago. On CBS This Morning this morning, she says “I did want to leave, but I’m not allowed to talk about why.” Things get REAL awkward, and after some hemming and hawing Gayle King asked her if it was about “a disagreement about money – male and female salaries?” and she responded “I’ve never complained to Showtime about pay parity.” (FF to around 4:30 in this video).

-Showtime has since released a statement (which is basically a non-statement): “We can’t speak for Ruth, but heading into season four everyone agreed the character’s story had run its course.”

–Diane Kruger even makes maternity jeans work.

-People is wading in on the Brangelina battle, with a source saying “they’ve always had different parenting styles.”

–Madonna turns 60(!) today. (Remember when she was 35 the press was calling her “grandma“?) She’s in the Moroccan city of Marrakesh, and asking her followers to celebrate her bday by donating to Raise Malawi. Back when she was 35 the press was calling her “grandma”.

-In honour of her bday, Madonna also released her full performance from this year’s MET gala.

-Also turning 60 and looking ah-maz-ing is Angela Bassett, who celebrated by posting a bikini pic.

–Rihanna is reportedly filming a Lemonade-style longform music video featuring Donald Glover. Yes, please!

-As expected, Blackish’s Kenya Barris has inked what sources say is a three-year, high-eight-figure overall TV deal with Netflix. I don’t blame him because a) ABC did him dirty and b) money!

-These photos of Tiffany Haddish by Annie Leibovitz for Vogue’s latest issue are amazing.

–Ivanka Trump really, really didn’t like SNL’s “Complicit” sketch with Scarlett Johansson playing her.

-After taking a meeting with James Gunn, Disney still isn’t bringing him back for Guardians Vol. 3.

–Kim Cattrall has the best rejection story: “Got replaced in a TV pilot by a major TV network boss because he said I had no Sex Appeal.”

-Speaking of SATC stars, this thread makes me want to move to NY so I can vote for Cynthia Nixon.

–TJ Miller is defending himself against his former Silicon Valley co-star Alice Wetterlund who accused him of being a “bully and petulant brat.” Weeks later, he says he’s not a bully, just a “benevolent benign maniac.” Uh huh.

-I can’t believe  This Is Us’ Justin Hartley has a kid in high school.

-In case you’re wondering, this is why everyone is freaking out about dick soap. (I’m more freaked out by someone making money off fan fiction who isn’t the author.)

–Justin Timberlake leaving his publicist of 20 years, Sonia Muckle.

-In his new GQ interview, Pete Davidson says his relationship with Ariana Grande progressed even faster than we thought: “The day I met her, I was like, ‘Hey, I’ll marry you tomorrow,’ ” he says, grinning. “She was calling my bluff. I sent her a picture [of engagement rings]. I was like, ‘Do you like any of these?’ She was like, ‘Those are my favorite ones,’ and I was like, ‘Sick.’ ”

–Ariana Grande did a Little Shop of Horrors duet with James Corden and got a piggyback through Starbucks in the latest Carpool Karaoke, which aired Wednesday night. I love that she knows exactly what people say about her and mocks it: “Did you know I demand to be carried everywhere? That is the kind of pop star I am! If you see me anywhere, it’s cause I didn’t walk there myself; I promise.”

Diane Kruger and Norman Reedus Are Having a Baby

-It looks like the rumours were true. Us Weekly is reporting that Diane Kruger is expecting her first child with The Walking Dead’s Norman Reedus.

-It’s a big day for Norman. He reportedly negotiated a huge pay raise ($20 million) to stay on The Walking Dead as news surfaced that Andrew Lincoln is leaving the show after season 9.

-Holy crap, did I NOT expect ABC to cancel Roseanne today. Yes, what she tweeted this morning was horrible, but she often tweets horrible things. There’s a lot of speculation that there’s more to this story and it wasn’t an out-of-nowhere decision by the network. Whitney Cummings quit as co-showrunner earlier this month, ratings weren’t as strong as when it debuted, and despite being the show ABC touted the strongest to advertisers at the upfronts, they had to be worried that an ignorant comment from Roseanne Barr in the future would spark an advertiser boycott a la Laura Ingraham‘s show. I mean, *something* else besides a terrible tweet had to be at play and in the works. ABC knew exactly who they were getting into bed with when they launched the show, and allowed a whole bunch of crap to go down before now, including the show’s Fresh Off The Boat/Blackish slam, and it’s fairy tale season finale. That being said, it’s still huge that they pulled the trigger. It was TV’s #1-rated and most watched comedy, prime time’s #3 program overall, and the ratings had stabilized. This means that ABC is going into the fall season without their biggest show, without Shonda Rhimes, and maybe without Black-ish creator Kenya Barris. That’s gotta hurt.

-The reaction to Roseanne’s cancellation was swift, with her talent agency dropping her, Paramount Network, TV Land, and CMT all pulling Roseanne from their respective schedules as of tomorrow,  ABC scrubbing all traces of the show from its press site, and in Canada CTV immediately pulling it from all its platforms.

-ABC is having a day! Bachelorette’s frontrunner Garrett Yrigoyen is under fire for liking social media posts that mock immigrants and the trans community.

–Lili Reinhart says she isn’t pregnant with Cole Sprouse’s baby — she just took a bad photo. This is why bump watch is *the worst*.

-In her new Harpers Bazaar interview, Jenna Dewan reflects on the end of her marriage to Channing Tatum: “We’re just getting used to it. We’re in a very positive energy together, trying to be the best parents to Everly. We support each other.”

-Morgan Freeman’s lawyer is demanding CNN retract their sexual harassment story. How can he do this? He already apologized. Plus, there is VIDEO of him hitting on reporters at junkets. “You got a dress that’s halfway between your knee and your p-hips, and you sit down right across from me, and you cross your legs.”

–Elle Fanning posting funny pics of Angelina Jolie on the Malificent 2 set is what we all need.

–Uma Thurman is the latest movie star to head to the small screen. She’s headline Netflix’s new supernatural series Chambers.

Solo: A Star Wars Story Isn’t Wowing Critics

-The first reviews for Solo are out, and though they are mixed (good, not great seems to be the theme), I’m glad that it sounds like Alden Ehrenreich delivers. I felt like he was being set up to be blamed if people didn’t like it with all the rumours about acting coaches, etc.

–Meghan Markle‘s dad has reportedly changed his mind and now wants to walk his daughter down the aisle after all, but he may be having heart surgery. The wedding is this weekend! What is happening?!?

-I was waiting for this: Now that the dust has settled, Lethal Weapon’s Damon Wayans  went OFF on fired co-star Clayne Crawford last night on Twitter, alleging abusive behavior. Before shutting down his Twitter account, Wayans posted a video that shows him getting struck in the back of his head by shrapnel while filming a scene. (An earlier report suggested that Crawford had been officially reprimanded twice, and once was for an incident when he was directing and another actor on set felt unsafe after being hit by a piece of shrapnel from an effect.) Wayans added that Crawford “relished in making females cry,” “struck fear in cast and crew”, punched an actor in the mouth with a bottle of green tea, and had a file full of “infractions.”

-Lethal Weapon costar Michelle Mitchenor also tweeted: “Ok @ClayneCrawford you know I have nothing but respect & admiration for your talent. But are you really going to let us catch all this heat KNOWING how unkind you were to some of our crew members or directors? The outbursts, profanity, saying you hoped the show was cancelled etc? …I can’t stand for verbal or emotional abuse. We had our moment & I took you to the side and we had a GREAT convo! & you listened! However countless others didn’t and things continued on… regardless of how passionate one may be, speaking to people in the manner you did in those countless incidents honestly made my heart sink.”

-Cannes put Diane Kruger on bump watch.

-Walkouts at Cannes screenings are not uncommon, but Lars von Trier‘s The House That Jack Built starring Matt Dillon as a serial killer  prompted over 100 audience members to flee the theater. The first wave of mass walkouts reportedly happened when Dillon’s character shoots two children in the head with a rifle, and the second wave was near the end when Riley Keough‘s character is being mutilated.

–Emilia Clarke at Cannes: “Find another adjective, damn it. Enough already with the strong women. Let’s just be women.”

–Kristen Stewart doesn’t care about Cannes’ red carpet rules. After posing for a few pictures in her complete outfit at Monday’s premiere of Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman, she took off her heels and went barefoot on the red carpet.

–Cardi B is apologizing for using the d-word in “Girls” her collab with Rita Ora, Charli XCX and Bebe Rexha. “I know i have use words before that i wasn’t aware that they are offensive to the LGBT community. I apologize for that. Not everybody knows the correct ‘terms’ to use. I learned and i stopped using it.”

-U2’s Bono and The Edge  become Ellen DeGeneres’ assistants for the day in today’s episode.

-This is a great interview with reporter Jim DeRogatis, who broke the R. Kelly story back in 2000, has been covering it ever since and is ready for others to care about it.

-This profile on Marti Noxon left me so conflicted. I really enjoyed the book Dietland and am looking forward to the adaptation. Her justification for season 6 of Buffy though and the re-positioning it as a precursor to shows like Jessica Jones and Fleabag…I just can’t. The wound is still too raw.

-Oh man, this piece on why David Letterman didn’t have female writers on his staff includes a perfect zinger from Merrill Markoe: “Because we were having sex, maybe he remembers me as an intern.”

–Greg Berlanti just set a new record with 14 series on air, which is insane.

-Also insane: Netflix will premiere an estimated 470 new originals between now and the end of 2018.

-This is a great Chris Evans story.

–New Girl ends tonight and even though I didn’t always watch in the later seasons, I’m going to miss it. Some of my favourite moments: Nick and Tran in the pool, Gave me cookie, got me cookie, the chicken dance, Jess’s rant on her brand of feminism, Nick’s attempt at burpees, and of course the hottest kiss ever.

-The guy who played Schmidt won’t be out of work for long. Max Greenfield is taking over as the lead in one of CBS’s new sitcoms.

-Oh yeah, I’m going to watch the crap out of this Netflix movie about Lucy Liu and Taye Diggs getting parent-trapped by their assistants.

-Watch Rami Malek channel his inner Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody: The Movie‘s first official teaser trailer.
