Janelle Monae Makes The Cut

janelle-monae-the-cut

Janelle Monae‘s cover story for The Cut was written by Roxane Gay, so you know it’s good. Monae talks her fear of the 2016 election results feuling her Dirty Computer album (“It started with who don’t I mind pissing off. I don’t mind pissing off conservatives. I don’t mind pissing off white men. I don’t give a fuck. This is about celebrating. I wanted to celebrate queer black people living outside of what it meant to be American”), and her method approach to shooting her new film Antebellum (“I want that spirit to always stay on-camera so I don’t break. I don’t talk on the phone a lot … I don’t want that to take me out of my space).

-Meanwhile, Roxane Gay also shared her thoughts on American Dirt and the West Side Story revival.

-Oscars are this weekend! The big acting awards seem locked (Joaquin Phoenix, Renée Zellweger, Brad Pitt, Laura Dern) but can Parasite’s increasing recognition mean it’ll cause an upset in best picture? God, I would love that.

Joaquin used his BAFTA acceptance speech this weekend to call out the ceremony’s lack of diversity, adding “I think that it is the obligation of the people that have created and perpetuate and benefit from a system of oppression to dismantle it so that’s on us.” This is a very, very good speech (especially since in the last few years of award shows, it’s only been actresses making this kind of stand). But it’s also very much like…ok, now what? At this point, Hollywood needs to start taking concrete steps to dismantle the system. Inclusion riders? Refusing to work with only white male directors? What’s it going to be?

-Meanwhile, Prince William, who is BAFTA’s president(!), revealed that the academy has “launched a full and thorough review of the entire awards process” following the #BAFTAsSoWhite controversy.

Joshua Jackson and Jodie Turner-Smith went to the BAFTAs and remain the cutest thing.

-People didn’t love Rebel Wilson’s speech but I dunno — I laughed at her Cats jokes.

Hugh Grant made Bridget Jones’s Diary references when he presented after Renée Zellweger at the BAFTAs, and it was perfect.

-12 days after reportedly getting married, Pamela Anderson is single again.

Megan Thee Stallion is apparently dating G Eazy and people have a lot of opinions about it.

-Speaking of new relationships, Lady Gaga is dating a CEO named Michael Polansky.

-The reviews for Hulu’s High Fidelity, starring Zoe Kravitz, are good. Really good.

-I binged the last six episodes of Bojack Horseman and I still can’t believe that an animated show about a horse makes my ‘best TV in the last decade’ list, but there it is. It’s also weirdly the third series finale I’ve seen this week with a door-to-death concept.

David Schwimmer is walking back his comment about “Maybe there should be an all-black Friends or an all-Asian Friends.” In a lengthy response to a post from actress Erika Alexander, he explained “I didn’t mean to imply Living Single hadn’t existed or indeed hadn’t come before Friends, which I knew it had.”

Jennifer Lopez and Shakira‘s Super Bowl performance was fire! In case you missed it (or just want to relive the glory) it’s on YouTube.

-Coach dropped their perfectly timed campaign with JLo hours after her performance.

-As per usual, the Super Bowl brought with it a bunch of new movie and TV trailers. On the TV front, Marvel gave us a peek at The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, WandaVision and Loki, while on the film side we have our first Bond trailer, a new look at Mulan and the Top Gun sequel, and a new Black Widow trailer.

Justin Bieber Talks About “Super Precious” Hailey Baldwin

Justin Bieber gushed about his new wife during his Ellen appearance and talked about the proposal. “I wasn’t really nervous about her saying yes. I was more nervous about ‘am I able to make this commitment? Am I able to make this commitment as a man and be able to honour what I say?’ Because you know that’s a serious commitment when you say you’re going to love someone for better and for worse and like be faithful that’s a huge..am I able to do that? So I think that’s what really I was battling with. ”

-Meanwhile, Selena Gomez says she felt like a victim of emotional abuse during her time with Bieber.

-I don’t say this very often, but this Katherine McPhee tweet is very good.

Jodie Turner-Smith says she and Joshua Jackson plan to raise their child in Canada. Welcome home, Pacey!

David Schwimmer says he pushed for diversity on Friends and was responsible for the casting of Lauren Tom and Aisha Tyler. “I was well aware of the lack of diversity and I campaigned for years to have Ross date women of color. One of the first girlfriends I had on the show was an Asian American woman, and later I dated African American women. That was a very conscious push on my part.”  He also suggested the show be rebooted with an “all-black Friends or an all-Asian Friends.”

This clip of Ariana Grande being incapable of not swearing during a red carpet interview? I felt that.

-This interview with the author of The Witcher is going viral because of his very candid, very relatable answers.

Andy Samberg‘s romcom Palm Springs just broke the record for the most expensive Sundance Film Festival sale of all time — by 69 cents. I’m surprised there was big bid this year, seeing as last year’s major buys (Late Night, The Report, Honey Boy, Britanny Runs a Marathon) didn’t translate into box office booms.

-In a series of tweets, Pink vowed not to mess with her face. Fine, more Botox left for me!

-Man, Terry Crews‘ refusal to stand up for Gabrielle Union (and his subsequent terrible tweet) are really, really disappointing.

-I stopped watching Riverdale in Season 1, but my god they’re going to try to tackle Hedwig and the Angry Inch in a musical episode and I just don’t know how to process that information.

-The controversy surrounding Oprah‘s latest book pick American Dirt isn’t slowing down, but it’s also not hurting sales. The author is doing a talk at my local Indigo next month, which is super disappointing.

-Here’s a really good, behind-the-scenes look at The Daily, the only podcast I listen to religiously.

-I can’t handle horror, but the buzz around Swallow is really good. Here’s the bizarre trailer.

Straight Up is filled with good character actors and the trailer is super charming. I’m charmed.

Tiffany Haddish Takes To The Streets

Tiffany Haddish and Billy Eichner took to the streets to cast a more inclusive Hocus Pocus. (It’s so funny, despite the unnecessary Kathy Najimy slam.)

-I’ll never question Meghan Markle‘s hair conspiracists again… (That’s not true; I totally will. But they were right about the no waves = pregnant thing, I guess.)

-Also, this is the first outfit I’ve seen her in where she kinda sorta maybe looks pregnant.

-A David Schwimmer doppleganger is wanted by the police, and the internet is having a field day with it. The British police even had to issue a statement confirming that they have ruled out the actor as a suspect in a beer theft case after posting a “wanted” picture of someone who bore a striking resemblance to the Friends star. At least he seems to be having a lot of fun with it, posting his own alibi video.

-Everyone wants to know all about Jennifer Garner’s new boyfriend, a CEO who she’s reportedly been dating for 6 months. He seems very cute in this company video he shot.

Ellen Pompeo says she was “completely shocked” by backlash over her paycheck. Um, really?

-Also, Ellen gave some pretty terrible advice about ovarian cancer screenings, which is not great Bob. If we can’t take medical advice from fake TV doctors, who can we take it from?!

Ariana Grande‘s family is reportedly relieved that her engagement to Pete Davidson fell through, sources told People.

-How can Disney be talking about “rebooting” the Pirates franchise? It’s still an active franchise — they just released one!

-I absolutely agree with this take that Jennifer’s Body would kill if it were released today.

-Timeless fans, expect an air date announcement about the wrap-up movie soon.

-Drake threw a 2000s-themed party for his birthday and I feel old.

-Speaking of feeling old, it’s the 10th anniversary of Twilight. Director Catherine Hardwicke and actor Jackson Rathbone returned to the site where the vampire baseball scene was filmed.

-I really love how critics are getting behind Legends of Tomorrow. It really is a delight.

-Here’s the trailer for season two of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which recently swept the Emmys despite no one I know watching it.

Sandra Bullock will do whatever it takes for her family to survive in Bird Box, dropping December 21 on Netflix. This looks intense — like The Quiet Place but instead of staying quiet to avoid the creatures, you have to stay blindfolded.
