Demi Lovato Is Engaged

-Congrats to Demi Lovato and soap star Max Ehrich, who are engaged after four months of dating. Man, emerald cut diamonds are everywhere now, huh?

-We all assumed One Direction’s 10-year anniversary would be today’s biggest music news. But then Taylor Swift unexpectedly announced she will be dropping her eighth studio album, titled folklore, tonight at midnight.

-Interestingly, Kanye West is supposed to be dropping his new album, Donda, at the same time. I’m sure that’s a complete coincidence.

-This is an interesting thread on how a surprise album has let Taylor escape the singles release structure, which frankly, has caused her issues for the past few releases. My least fave songs for her last two albums were the ones she released first.

–Britney Spears‘ brother Byran laughed off rumours she’s being held captive and said of her conservatorship “Obviously there was a need for it in the beginning…It’s been a great thing for our family and we keep hoping for the best.” He added “She’s always wanted to get out of it. It’s very frustrating to have. Whether someone’s coming in peace to help or coming in with an attitude, having someone constantly tell you to do something has got to be frustrating.”

–Megan Fox gushed about her relationship with Machine Gun Kelly when they appeared together on the Give Them Lala…With Randall podcast. “The second that I was in a room with him and said hello to him and looked into his eyes, I knew right away that he was what I call a twin flame. We’re actually two halves of the same soul I think. I said that to him almost immediately. I felt it right away.”

–Martha Stewart expertly shading Chelsea Handler is what I needed today.

-ComicCon kicked off this morning. Here’s when some of the biggest panels for TV/movies are taking place — which you can watch on YouTube.

–Eminem is reportedly terrified of what Mariah Carey might reveal in her new memoir about the time they dated. I forgot about that! A source tells Us Weekly: “Marshall is stressed out that Mariah is going to say s–t that he was bad in bed or a selfish lover because he has always been very insecure about that. She knows that.”

-The Johnny Depp libel trial continues. Amber Heard has been on the stand the past few days, and has accused him of headbutting her the night before she appeared on James Corden’s show, trying to throw her sister down a set of stairs, and going on a 36-hour cocaine and whiskey binge.

–Taraji P. Henson might get her own Empire spinoff at Fox.

–Chris D’Elia‘s prank show for Netflix has been scrapped after those allegations of inappropriateness with fans.

-I didn’t even like The Kissing Booth and I’m still going to watch the crap out of the sequel because that’s where quarantine has me these days.

-Amazon on Thursday released the first trailer for Gillian Flynn’s forthcoming apocalyptic thriller Utopia, starring John Cusack, Rainn Wilson and Sasha Lane. This was first announced back in 2014 so I had assumed it wasn’t going forward.

–Bill and Ted 3 has moved to a September theatre release, with a simultaneous video on demand release. For a movie of this size, this makes the most sense. Open in other countries, and in North America on mostly VOD to take advantage of all the marketing already done.

Avengers’ Paul Rudd and Chris Evans Re-Assemble

-The latest Actors on Actors interview is out, and it’s with Paul Rudd and Chris Evans. Needless to say, if you want to be charmed for 43 minutes this is for you. The best part was watching Evans fanboy over Rudd, asking “Why don’t you age? Are you drinking baby blood?”, recalling making him dance on video the first day they met, and saying “you’re like sorbet. You’re a palate cleanser – an always welcome addition.”

–Emma Roberts and Garrett Hedlund are not only still together, they’re having a baby!

–Jodie Turner-Smith calling Joshua Jackson a daddy (because “I made him one”) is social media perfection.

-Citing her own “pervasive privilege,” Kristen Bell has announced she is leaving her role as a biracial character on the Apple TV+ animated series Central Park. I would love to know the timing of this and if she made the decision before or after Jenny Slate. (Also, it was only back in January where the Central Park creator strongly defended the casting during the TCAs.)

–Naomi Campbell covers the new issue of Vogue Spain and says it’s the first time she’s been photographed by a black Photgrapher for vogue / condenast and it was a woman of color.

-I pity the poor PR person who has to clean up Chris D’Elia‘s latest mess. In a misguided effort to prove he’s not a creep, he released a bunch of emails — which make him sound like a creep.

–Demi Lovato seems content and in love, and I’m so happy for her.

-She also just signed a new deal with YouTube for a docuseries following the last three years of her ups and downs.

-Netflix will premiere a new show on July 10 called Down to Earth With Zac Efron in which the actor “searches for healthy, sustainable ways to live.” This is a different show than his upcoming Quibi one called Killing Zac Efron — which sounds like the total opposite.

-I get what this Variety article on the Television Critic Awards’ history of picking white winners was trying to do, but I’m not sure “submitting a more consciously inclusive ballot” is the only answer. (People much smarter than I am are talking about this much better than I ever could.)

–Lisa Rinna claims the Karens at QVC is trying to silence her political views.

–Celine Dion released a Pride-themed playlist and it is as cheesy and fun as you’d expect.

–The Dixie Chicks are changing their name: The trio is now called The Chicks.

–Cardi B was trending today because people thought she was trashing other female artists on a fake account. “These people must think I’m a 15-year-old girl … Stop trying to make this fake s**t up… don’t make lies about me. it’s tiring. It’s annoying.”

-Normal People stars Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones are reuniting for a pair of comedic shorts for Ireland’s Comic Relief. It’ll be set 40 years in the future — though I’m not sure older versions is really what people want to see from these characters.

-Meanwhile, following the success of Normal People, Hulu has ordered an adaptation of Sally Rooney‘s other novel, Conversations with Friends — a book I liked a lot more.

–Sharon Choi, best known as director Bong Joon-ho’s interpreter during last year’s award season, interviewed Sandra Oh about Killing Eve.

–Blackfeet Boxing: Not Invisible tells the story of the Blackfeet Boxing Club, which was set up to teach young women of the Blackfeet Nation boxing and self-defense.

-The trailer for Muppets Now on Disney+ features RuPaul, Taye Diggs, Aubrey Plaza and Seth Rogen.

–Gerard Butler tries to run from a comet in the Greenland trailer.

-This year’s Hollywood Reporter’s TV drama actress roundtable features Janelle Monae, Jennifer Aniston, Zendaya, Reese Witherspoon, Helena Bonham Carter and Rose Byrne. I love how Witherspoon, Aniston and Carter are all going on about how the pandemic has given them time to pause and think about the world and Monae says “For me and my people, for the Black community, this is not an exciting time. This isn’t a time that we get to really reflect. We’re dealing with a lot of trauma.”

–Jenny Slate has exited Big Mouth. “Black characters on an animated show should be played by Black people. Me playing Missy, I was engaging in an act of erasure of Black people.” Your move, Kristen Bell.

–Bryan Singer appears to still be preying on boys despite The Atlantic’s explosive expose about him last year. In a new thread, Elijah Daniel details how the disgraced director is still around and allegedly recruiting boys for trips to Hawaii, shifting his focus from aspiring actors to Instagram influencers. Minutes after posting the thread, images of boys with the tag #BryanSinger were scrubbed from Instagram.

–Stephen Colbert interviewed John Bolton last night and did not get off his neck. It was glorious. “How did you not know beforehand that [Trump] was just callow? … You’re an international negotiator. How could you be naive? You’ve dealt with the worst people in the world.”

-The Globes’ TV critic John Doyle spilled some tea on Ben Mulroney and his thin skin in today’s paper. He talked about jokingly creating a ‘most annoying Cdn’ poll in 2003. Mulroney, who was hosting Canadian Idol at the time, tied with the guy from the Canadian Tire ads. “All in good fun. Some of the TV personalities on the list thought it was hilarious. One sent me a bouquet of flowers. I didn’t hear from Ben Mulroney directly of course. Oh my, no. I did hear from Senator Marjory LeBreton, the former deputy chief of staff in Brian Mulroney’s government. Her letter to the Editor-in-Chief and Publisher and CEO of this newspaper, also cc’d me, let me know there was umbrage taken at Ben Mulroney being teased in my column…There was certainly a call or two of complaint to the paper’s then Editor-in-Chief from Brian Mulroney.” While Doyle’s bosses were supportive of him, he says his counterpart at The Sun wasn’t so lucky: “Brian Mulroney was then on the board of Quebecor, which owned the Sun, and the Mulroney family complained to the paper’s bosses about the TV critic’s coverage of Ben. The writer was summoned to a meeting and told, ‘Never type the words ‘Ben Mulroney’ again.’ And he didn’t. He couldn’t.”

-Meanwhile, Lainey reiterated and expanded upon the apology she posted on today’s episode of The Social after her old posts were trending online. This is very well done.

–Penn Badgley spoke about his You costar Chris D’Elia being accused of sexually harassing and grooming underage girls: “It did affect me deeply. I was very troubled by it. I am very troubled by it. I don’t know Chris. I know that, if there’s anything we need to do in this age, it’s to believe women.”

-Days of Our Lives’ Melissa Reeves has come under fire for her anti-Black Lives Matter stance. As someone who once made a scrapbook for Jack & Jennifer’s wedding in her youth, this is super disappointing.

-Brooklyn Nine-Nine is reportedly scrapping four episodes and starting over to focus more on BLM.

-Really liked this piece on how we think of — and what we want from — famous people is changing.

–Roch Voisine was trending in Canada, and I’m so happy that it’s not because he has died… It’s because he’s turned into a stone cold daddy.

–Timothee Chalamet and Eiza Gonzalez were spotted vacationing together in Mexico. How is anyone vacationing right now? I have so many questions.

-TIFF has unveiled the first details about this year’s film festival. It’ll be dramatically scaled down (50 features from last year’s 333), will feature some drive-in screenings, and will have a huge online component.

–John Boyega responded to that viral marriage proposal.

-Netflix’s new cooking show Crazy Delicious is getting great buzz.

–Padma Lakshmi’s Taste the Nation on Hulu is also getting good reviews.

-Eurovision Song Contest, starring Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams and dropping on Netflix this weekend, is getting mixed reviews. Variety says it’s “a badly shot one-joke movie that sits there and goes thud,” while Vulture calls it “glorious,” the Globe & Mail says “it’s barely a movie at all,” and Vanity Fair calls it “silly and fun.”

-Here’s the trailer for HBO Max’s Expecting Amy, a three-part documentary series following Amy Schumer as she juggles looming parenthood with her stand-up career.
