Meghan Markle Hits Back at Smear Campaign

-My god, how much does the palace and/or the British press hate Meghan Markle? Or at the very least, are terrified of her? In a very transparent attempt to undercut this weekend’s Oprah interview, there’s a new, flimsily detailed smear story in the Times about her “bullying” the royal staff. And in a highly unusual move, Buckingham Palace just released a statement that they will investigate the claims because they will not “tolerate bullying.” That’s rich.

-The story also makes a big deal of her earring choice, but this thread reveals how she was clearly set up. My god, no wonder Harry wanted to get her away from there.

-Of course, the palace could spend all this energy looking into the allegations surrounding Prince Andrew instead, but they’re all “nah.”

-Meanwhile, Meghan‘s camp released a statement: “It’s no coincidence that distorted several-year-old accusations aimed at undermining the duchess are being briefed to the British media shortly before she and the duke are due to speak openly and honestly about their experience of recent years.”

-Bets are being made about the new baby’s name, with “Diana” leading the way with 10/1 odds.

-The Golden Globes have come and gone, but the LA Times is still going after them. They just reported that HFPA members voted not to hire a diversity consultant last summer.

–Regé-Jean Page is gonna be in a movie with Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans?! Just take my money already.

-In weirder casting news, Joseph Gordon-Levitt will play Jiminy Cricket, and Cynthia Erivo a Blue Fairy in a live-action Pinocchio.

-The Hollywood Reporter keeps tweeting out clips from their actors roundtable and the clips with Ben Affleck have an energy that worries me.

-Though apparently he’s doing well and working with George Clooney.

-Comedian Chris D’Elia is being sued by a woman who says he sought pictures and sex from her when she was 17. He’s accused of soliciting more than 100 sexually explicit photos and videos. He denies the claims.

–Alec Baldwin needs to keep Gillian Anderson’s name out of his mouth.

–Camila Cabello launched an initiative to provide grants to ten BIPOC, LGBTQ+and youth-led organizations to cover six months’ worth of mental health support for their workers.

–Emo is having a moment — and it’s all because of TikTok.

-I’ve missed movies and theatres so, so much during this past year, and there’s only been two experiences that have made me feel like I was sitting in an audience again. The first was last fall’s David Byrne’s Utopia, and the second was the In & Of Itself, which just landing on Crave. It’s ostensibly a magic show (and yes, there are some card tricks and illusions) but it’s more an examination of identity and personal narratives. I sobbed — not because it was depressing but just because it was so incredibly profound and moving.

-Moxie, the new Amy Poehler–directed teen-feminist rom-com on Netflix, is getting lukewarm reviews.

–Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer become superheroes in Netflix’s Thunder Force trailer. The “Kiss From a Rose” bit got me. Also, the fact that Bobby Cannavale and McCarthy keep making movies together makes me happy.

 

Gwyneth Paltrow Strikes Again

-Remember when Gwyneth Paltrow pretended to be responsible for the yoga trend? Now she’s trying to claim the same about face masks. Sit down, lady.

-People really had Megan Thee Stallion‘s new Harper’s cover — but she’s into it.

-We always heard that the people behind the votes for the Golden Globe Awards were susceptible to um, influence, but a new Los Angeles Times report about the shenanigans behind this year’s nominations is especially eye opening. That much ridiculed nomination for Emily In Paris makes a lot more sense when you read “Paramount Network treated [more than 30 members] to a two-night stay at the five-star Peninsula Paris hotel, where rooms currently start at about $1,400 a night, and a news conference and lunch at the Musée des Arts Forains, a private museum filled with amusement rides dating to 1850 where the show was shooting.” Oh, and the HFPA also has no Black members!

–Meghan Markle and Prince Harry surprised a Texas women’s shelter by giving them the funds to replace their roof damaged in the brutal winter storm.

-Meanwhile, the royal family may be trying to steal the spotlight from Harry and Meghan’s interview with Oprah by airing their own TV address.

-A settlement deal has been reached in a 2019 lawsuit alleging that James Franco intimidated his students into sexual situations at the acting school he founded.

–Daft Punk’s publicist confirmed the band has split up.  We really are living in the darkest timeline, aren’t we?

–Chris D’Elia broke his silence on those allegations of pursuing underage girls in a long YouTube video. He says he was a sex addict — which doesn’t explain or excuse the underage part.

-With all the awful clips of interviewers like David Letterman treating young female stars like crap, this old clip makes me appreciate Strombo even more.

–Gillian Anderson is finding a niche playing 20th century female political icons. She’ll follow up her turn as Margaret Thatcher in The Crown by playing Eleanor Roosevelt in Showtime’s upcoming anthology series The First Lady.

-SNL is hit and miss at the best of times these days, but Bridgerton’s Regé-Jean Page certainly showed off his chops this weekend. He sang, he danced, he did accents, he smoldered. It was basically an audition reel for casting directors. I’m not mad about it.

-Here’s our first look at Claire Danes in Apple+’s Victorian-era drama series The Essex Serpent, based on the Sarah Perry novel.

–Hope Davis is joining the Succession cast in season three. She’ll play Sandi Furness, not to be confused with her mom, Logan’s long-time rival, Sandy Furness.

-Meanwhile, Succession’s Nicholas Braun heard about Kim Kardashian‘s divorce filing and is shooting his shot. “Would you be down to meet a new person, totally just kind of different guy? One who could, you know, make you laugh a little bit or make you feel small cause he’s so tall.”

-This lawyer explained why Kris Jenner would have wanted to make it it clear in the press that Kim and Kanye separated days before Kanye’s class action suits were supposed to hit in January. And now the date of separation wasn’t listed in the divorce filing — because the press articles from January will be used to prove the date. That’s both diabolical and impressive.

–Zack Snyder wanted to add a romance between Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne and Amy Adams’s Lois Lane in Justice League. “The intention was that Bruce fell in love with Lois and then realized that the only way to save the world was to bring Superman back.” I’m not sure what’s worse – the total misread of Bruce’s character, or using a female character as complex as Lois just to motivate a dude.

-Modern Love season two is going to feature a ton of familiar faces, including Kit Harington, Anna Paquin, Minnie Driver and Garrett Hedlund.

-I really liked Nomadland but I understand the criticisms it’s getting, especially it’s oddly gentle treatment of Amazon and the gig labor economy.

-Netflix’s The Irregulars, about teens who assist Sherlock Holmes and Watson, premieres March 26. Here’s the first trailer.

John Boyega Takes the Gloves Off

-My god, this John Boyega interview in British GQ is a thrilling read. He speaks frankly about his Star Wars experience, particularly The Last Jedi: “What I would say to Disney is do not bring out a Black character, market them to be much more important in the franchise than they are and then have them pushed to the side. It’s not good. I’ll say it straight up…Like, you guys knew what to do with Daisy Ridley, you knew what to do with Adam Driver. You knew what to do with these other people, but when it came to Kelly Marie Tran, when it came to John Boyega, you know fuck all. So what do you want me to say? What they want you to say is, ‘I enjoyed being a part of it. It was a great experience…’ Nah, nah, nah. I’ll take that deal when it’s a great experience. They gave all the nuance to Adam Driver, all the nuance to Daisy Ridley. Let’s be honest. Daisy knows this. Adam knows this. Everybody knows. I’m not exposing anything.”

-It’s wild to me that some people are criticizing him for this interview and “biting the hand that feeds him.” Disney is increasingly consolidating the entire movie industry and is a multi-billion-dollar media monopoly. They don’t need Twitter fanboys to defend them.

–Two more women have come forward with allegations that comedian Chris D’Elia exposed himself to them.

-A new take on Pretty Little Liars is in the works from the showrunner of Riverdale. No one needs this right now.

–Prince Harry and Meghan Markle just signed a massive multi-year deal with Netflix, where they will be producing films and shows aimed at “inspiring hope.”

-Mulan star Yifei Liu once owned 30 cats. I have so many questions.

–Cardi B has come a long way since getting into a fight with Nicki Minaj at a fashion party. She just became the new face of Balenciaga.

-Part of me wants to cheer when celebs like Padma Lakshmi post bikini pics to celebrate turning 50, but part of mean thinks this is really damaging.

-The Venice Film Festival opened with a rallying cry in defense of the moviegoing experience in the face of threats posed by streaming giants.

-Why in the world is the CW  trying to rename the Arrowverse the CWverse? Nah.

–Britney Spears is denying comments that she keeps posting the same selfies over and over, saying “well you know us girls …… it’s the same top and same hair but if you look at the details it’s a completely different picture.”  But — and I think this question applies to her entire social media presence — why?!

-There are new photos of Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis in their upcoming gay holiday romcom and I need this movie so much.

-Scientology is reportedly tightening its reins even tighter with celeb followers. How fun for them.

-Star Trek: Discovery’s third season is going to introduce Trek’s first explicitly trans and non-binary characters.

-While promoting her new beauty line, Selena Gomez opened up about her mental health troubles. “I’ve tried a ton of different things, but the one thing I’ve never stopped doing is asking for help. That was the hardest part, but I truly believe that that’s why I’m stronger.”

-Here’s the trailer for Emily in Paris, a new series from Sex and the City creator Darren Star that stars Lily Collins.

-The first trailer for Netflix’s Ryan Murphy-produced adaptation of the hit Broadway show The Boys in the Band has arrived, starring Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Matt Bomer, Charlie Carver, Robin DeJesús and Andrew Rannells.
