Ellen Page Uses Her Late Night Appearance To Call Out Mike Pence’s Homophobia

Ellen Page was articulate and passionate last night on the Colbert Show, where she asked viewers to “connect the dots” between homophobic rhetoric and physical violence. “I’m lucky to have this time and this privilege to say this. This needs to f*cking stop.” Also, good on Stephen Colbert for just stepping back and letting her talk.

Adam Levine canceled the press conference before the Super Bowl, because holding one would have required Maroon 5 to answer uncomfortable questions. He then gave a wishy-washy defense of his involvement: “No one thought about it more than I did. No one put more thought and love into this than I did…I spoke to many people; most importantly though, I silenced all the noise and listened to myself, and made my decision about how I felt.” Well, as long as he listened to HIMSELF, we’re all good, I guess.

Reese Witherspoon‘s newest book recommendation is Jasmine Guillory‘s The Proposal, which I adored.

-Google Assistant continues with the Home Alone trend, this time with Joe Pesci.

-Netflix’s Russian Doll (starring Natasha Lyonne and exec produced by Amy Poehler) hits Netflix today and it’s been a while since I’ve seen critics so universally embrace a new show. Variety says it’s “spiky, funny, devastating and downright bizzare,” Rolling Stone calls Lyonne a “revelation,”  Vox calls it terrific and twisted, AV Club says it’s more rewarding than any puzzle-box show, Vulture calls it a “brilliant, surreal show about women in power,” The Hollywood Reporter says it starts good, then gets better, and The New York  Times says the main character describes herself as “if Andrew Dice Clay and the little girl from Brave made a baby.”

Olivia Wilde takes down abusers in the trailer for A Vigilante.

-Hobbs & Shaw are an ass-kicking odd couple in the Fast & Furious spin-off’s first ridiculous but also kinda great trailer.

Ryan Reynolds Gets Duped By Hugh Jackman & Jake Gyllenhaal

-This Ryan Reynolds tweet made me laugh a lot.

-Speaking of Jake Gyllenhaal, he’s reportedly dating a 22-year-old model. Sure.

-Wait, Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas had two more wedding receptions this week? Is this just their life now?

-An old video of Chris Rock, Louis CK and Ricky Gervais freely talking about using the n-word on stage has resurfaced, and people are not happy. (Jerry Seinfeld was also part of the conversation, but acquitted himself well by seeming uncomfortable and refusing to repeat the word: “You’ve found the humour of it. I haven’t found it, nor do I seek it.”)

-On the Tonight Show, Felicity Jones attempted some Beyonce moves and it went better than you’d expect.

Dylan O’Brien and Britt Robertson, who’ve been dating since 2012, have reportedly split.

Demi Lovato took to Twitter to deny the “sources” of a recent tabloid story about her recovery. She added: “Someday I’ll tell the world what exactly happened, why it happened and what my life is like today.. but until I’m ready to share that with people please stop prying and making up shit that you know nothing about. I still need space and time to heal.”

Colin Farrell used a recent talk show appearance to shine a spotlight on his friend who’s suffering from Epidermolysis bullosa.

-This is an interesting interview with showrunners over the need for Hollywood to learn how to handle sex scenes better. This is a side effect of peak TV: a bunch of writers/directors are now running TV shows who have no idea deal with people management.

Sandra Bullock‘s new Netflix movie Bird Box isn’t getting great reviews.  According to my Twitter feed, people don’t seem to care.

-This is a good piece about feeling alienated from a lot of the “girl power” messaging at the movies and TV this year. I follow an academic on Twitter who’s summed this phenomenon up perfectly: plastic representation.

-Tell your mother to stop worrying: Mark Harmon‘s rep slammed the “completely false” rumour the actor is leaving NCIS.

-Congrats to Andy Cohen, who announced he’s going to be a father.

Lena Dunham’s Apology Falls Flat

-Jesus. I’d read about Lena Dunham’s apology to Aurora Perrineau and it was bad enough, but the video is full on cringe. Owning your mistakes in public is great, but this whole thing just feels so performative and gross.

Offset‘s alleged mistress has apologized to Cardi B after hearing about their split. “I have not messed with Offset since he had his baby. I didn’t know how serious his marriage was, you know … I feel ashamed,” she told TMZ.

-The Golden Globe nominations were announced today, and while there were some great surprises (The Americans, The Bodyguard, Sandra Oh, The Good Place), I’m very bummed that Widows and Atlanta were shut out.

-Also, I don’t understand any of the movie categories. Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star is Born should be in the music/comedy category rather than Best Motion Picture Drama. And why is Green Book a comedy or musical?

-Also, people are not happy that Girl, the trans-hating movie from Belgium, got a nomination.

-Wondering why all the Hallmark holiday movies look so familiar? Most of them are shot in northern Ontario.
