Nicole Kidman’s Reinvention as a TV Star

Nicole Kidman sits on the grass in a red dress on the cover of Harper's Bazaar

Nicole Kidman graces the new issue of Harper’s Bazaar (though I wish they’d chosen one of the other photos for the cover instead). She talks filming Nine Perfect Strangers during the pandemic (“We just really bonded and that’s unusual for this day and age. Because a lot of times people are coming in and leaving and you don’t get that camaraderie and friendship”) and recovering from the harsh spotlight of her marriage to Tom Cruise (“I’m wary at times, and I’ve been hurt, but at the same time I much prefer a warm approach rather than a prickly shut-down approach. My husband, Keith, says that when he met me, he said, ‘How’s your heart?’ And I apparently responded, ‘Open'”).

-The Emmy Awards were last night and though there weren’t many upsets, most of the winners were solid choices. Fashion-wise, my favourite looks were from Anya Taylor-Joy, Yara Shahidi, Beanie Feldstein, Angela Bassett and Nicole Byer. I didn’t love Kathyrn Hahn, Juno Temple or Emma Corrin (but at least Corrin gave everyone something to talk about).

Seth Rogen was the first presenter and kicked off the show with a bit about the seemingly lax covid protocols. “Let me start by saying there’s way too many of us in this little room. What are we doing? They said this was outdoors – it’s not! They lied to us…I would not have come to this.”

Taika Waititi and Rita Ora were way too extra.

Michaela Coel‘s speech may have destroyed me.

-Do I have to start watching Reservation Dogs? The cast got the biggest cheers when they presented last night, and critics (who always liked the show) seem to be raving about the final three episodes of the season.

Adele made her relationship with Rich Paul Instagram official among a slideshow about her wearing a dress that’s very reminiscent of 90210’s prom episode.

Gisele Bündchen is defending Dutch model Doutzen Kroes, who is facing backlash for posting an anti-vax comment on Instagram.

-After he was caught on tape saying the n-word, country music star Morgan Wallen pledged $500K to Black-led charities. Rolling Stone reached out to 57 state, regional and national organizations, and so far only one reported receiving any money from Wallen.

-I don’t understand why people don’t scrub their internet history the second they achieve a whiff of fame. Simu Liu is under fire after old Reddit posts he reportedly wrote were uncovered.

-Jane the Virgin star Justin Baldoni‘s does his best Backstreet Boy impression in his hilarious new HP Ink commercial.

Emily Blunt and The Rock proved that tequila makes makes press junkets better.

-I don’t actually think I finished The Haunting of Bly Manor, but I’m going to check out Midnight Mass, Mike Flanagan’s latest for Netflix, because the reviews are excellent. Hamish Linklater and Zach Gilford‘s performances, in particular, keep getting shouted out as exceptional.

-Michael Myers is back in the final trailer for Halloween Kills.

Tom Hanks, a robot, and a dog versus the world in the first trailer for AppleTV’s emotional survival story, Finch.

Succession Season 3 Enters Beast Mode

-The Succession season 3 trailer has arrived and it’s got everything: fake cyanide pills, Logan in “full fu*king beast” mode, Adrien Brody looking cold, Alexander Skarsgard using his real accent.

Anya Taylor-Joy is on the October cover of Vogue Mexico.

Hailey Bieber is shooting down rumours that Justin Bieber is mistreating her.

-Reviews of The Morning Show season 2 (which just dropped its premiere) indicate it’s bonkers, but you can’t look away.

-This video of Daniel Craig addressing the crew at the wrap of his last Bond movie is very sweet.

Dan Levy has inked a movie and TV deal with Netflix, and one of his first projects will be to direct and star in a romcom. Love this for him!

-This interview with Selma Blair is well worth your time. “I didn’t understand people didn’t hurt every day. I’ve hurt since I can remember.”

-Actor Frank Grillo is not happy with the cut of his performance in Cop Shop.

-Ted Lasso’s Brett Goldstein was very adorable on Kimmel last night.

-Here’s the You season 3 trailer. (The noise I made when Scott Speedman showed up…) Twitter buzz from TV critics suggest this is its strongest season yet.

The Humans trailer shows Beanie Feldstein, Steven Yeun, Richard Jenkins and Amy Schumer trying to survive a family dinner in a horrible NYC apartment. This is my closing TIFF film this weekend so I’m hoping to end on a high.

-Here’s the first teaser for Guillermo Del Toro’s Nightmare Alley, starring Bradley Cooper and Cate Blanchett.

Lana Condor Fights for Change

lana condor on the cover of Shape magazine

Lana Condor covers the new issue of Shape and talks about standing up to Asian hate (“Speaking up is important. It’s easy to be a bystander, but you could save a life if you stand up for someone”) and how she chooses projects (“I’m very calculated about the projects I take on now. I want to continue to show people who look like me that they can do whatever they want to, regardless of what someone might have told them”).

-Mad Men alum (and Alexis Bledel‘s husband) Vincent Kartheiser is in the new season of Titans but is not in the poster or the press tour because his stint on the show triggered at least two complaints and two internal investigations, reports Deadline. He was accused of disruptive, juvenile behavior and outbursts, and inappropriate comments on the Toronto set. (His rep denies the claims.)

-The viral exchange between Don Cheadle and Kevin Hart encapsulates the Gen X mood. My favourite part is Hart’s IMMEDIATE and quiet “I’m sorry.” With one look from Cheadle, the man knew he had messed up. (They’re friends so I’m sure it’s a bit, but this is still hilariously awkward.)

-Hart also scored an interview with Cameron Diaz.

Maggie Q says “I never really dated. I’m so bad at [that]. I’m really shy when it comes to that kind of stuff. I never really get asked out on dates and go on a date. I just don’t do it.” She was previously engaged to Dylan McDermott, and I saw her a few times with a guy when she was shooting Nikita here, but I guess everyone’s definition of “dating” is different.

Lizzo and Cardi B are giving us something to talk about. The Hustlers costars collab on Lizzo’s new song “Rumours” (her first in two years!), and dropped a video for it today.

-Meanwhile, Lizzo and Chris Evans might finally meet IRL. She said, “He did say he will come to a show, and I was like, okay, shots on me. And he said, ‘no shots on me.’ ”

-The Crown’s Emma Corrin is opening up about gender identity and fluidity. “I think that we’re so used to defining ourselves. And that’s the way, sadly, society works, is within these binaries, and it’s taken me a long time to realize that I exist somewhere in between. And I’m still not sure where that is yet.”

Kelly Clarkson scored a big win: a judge upheld her prenup.

Ethan Hawke says he’s joining the Marvel universe because Oscar Isaac recruited him in their neighborhood in Brooklyn. “I was at a coffee shop, he came up to me. He’s like, ‘Hey, I really liked The Good Lord Bird.’ I was like ‘Oh, cool, I really like your work. You’re amazing.’ He’s like, ‘Hey, want to be in the Moon Knight with me?’ I was like … yeah!”

Kevin Costner participated in the Field of Dreams baseball game. This kind of got to me in a way that I wasn’t expecting.

-In surprise move, Amazon is moving its $1B Lord of the Rings production from New Zealand to the UK for season 2. It will have to give up hundreds of millions in rebates/incentives from the NZ government.

-SNL alum  Horatio Sanz was hit with a lawsuit accusing him of grooming and groping a teen fan.

-The mid-season finale of Gossip Girl aired this week (the season’s second half will air in the fall). I gave up on this one a few episodes in because it was burning through storylines faster than I could care about them. The way critics talk, it sounds like I’m not missing much.

-FX ordered American Story spin-offs about love and sports. The first installment of “American Love Story” will tell a scripted tale about John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy (I’m SO curious about the casting of this one), while American Sports Story will focus on former NFL player and convicted murderer Aaron Hernandez.

-Meanwhile, here’s the first trailer for Impeachment: American Crime StoryBeanie Feldstein plays Monica Lewinsky, Edie Falco plays Hillary Clinton, Clive Owen plays Bill Clinton, Sarah Paulson plays Linda Tripp, Cobie Smulders plays Ann Coulter and Billy Eichner plays Matt Drudge.
