Sandra Oh is a Person of the Year

Sandra Oh in a pink top on the cover of People

Sandra Oh has been named one of People’s People of the Year, and talked about inspiring others (“It means so much to me to be on this cover. When I was growing up, I never saw my face on the cover. To be asked to be on the cover is a great privilege, because it normalizes things for my nephews and nieces”) and how her impromptu speech at a Stop Asian Hate rally went viral (“There was a lot of pain and outrage, and when that happens, you need to gather together. That’s the only way to get through. If you’re standing side by side with someone who’s not your gender or not your race, you can go, ‘Okay, we have commonality.’ We need to move through fear”).

Michael B. Jordan covers THR and talks about growing his empire (“To be young, Black and successful — and disruptive — in this industry, there’s a certain navigation to get to the place I need to get to. And you try to hold that moment and stay in it for as long as you can”) and posting about his relationship with Lori Harvey on social media (“There’s a premeditated planning of staying out of the way [of the public eye] that sometimes kills spontaneity and intimacy. I wanted to take that away and give this the best chance it had, in this weird world that we live in, to be somewhat normal”).

Ben Affleck talked to Wall Street Journal’s magazine about second chances — both in his career and in his love life. However, he’s trying to create boundaries when it comes to sharing details. When asked about Jennifer Lopez, he said, “You can write conjecture about it, but one of the harder lessons that I have learned is that it’s not wise to share everything with the world. There are some things which are private and intimate and have meaning in terms of their intimacy by dint of the fact that they’re not shared with the rest of the world. I’m more comfortable just learning to find a boundary between things that I want to share and things that I don’t.”

Alec Baldwin gave an “intense” post-Rust interview to ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos. It’ll air tomorrow, but they released a clip of him tearing up.

-Everyone’s sharing their Spotify Wrapped lists today. In the meantime, Spotify announced that Bad Bunny edged out Taylor Swift for the coveted title of their most-streamed artist of 2021.  This marks the second year in a row for him to get the honour — and he didn’t even release a new album this year.

-Succession’s J. Smith-Cameron says she has “no issue” being a sex symbol. We don’t have an issue with it, either!

-Meanwhile, Matthew Macfadyen discussed which of Tom’s relationships is more secure: Shiv or Greg.

Sandra Bullock was on Red Table Talk and discussed her terrifying home invasion in 2014 (“The violation of that. I wasn’t the same after that, I was unraveling…I haven’t been alone since the day it happened”), and how she told her photographer boyfriend Bryan Randall that she was adopting another child (“We hadn’t been together that long and I go “You remember that NDA you signed when you photographed my son [at the birthday party where we met?] You know that still holds?’ And he said “Yeah, ok, why?’ And is said, “Cause I’m bringing a child home when I come back from Toronto”).

-Yellowjackets is a new show that seems to be sneaking onto people’s radar. I wonder if it’ll end up on some Best of 2021 lists?

Lindsay Lohan Is Engaged

-Congrats to Lindsay Lohan, who’s engaged to boyfriend Bader Shammas. They’ve been dating since at least last year.

-Texans can breathe a sigh of relief: Matthew McConaughey has decided not to run for governor.  Prob for the best; he recently did a NYT interview with Kara Swisher and when she asked him about voter suppression, he had no idea what she was talking about.

-Nooooo! Tiffany Haddish and Common have reportedly called it quits after a year of dating.

-Insecure’s Natasha Rothwell talked about the rough time she had in the SNL writers’ room, and how she had to raise her hand and ask to speak. Interestingly, the head writer during her tenure would have been Colin Jost.

-Of course Kevin Hart is defending Dave Chappelle. Of course he is.

-HBO Max has announced a third Magic Mike movie with Channing Tatum and Steven Soderbergh. Hmmm. The first MM film (which Soderbergh directed) got better reviews, but I will ride hard for Magic Mike XXL, which he wasn’t involved with. I want a sequel to that one.

-In news that will surprise no one, Tom Holland is set to return for more Spider-Man movies after this one.

Tom Ford had some harsh words for House of Gucci. I mean, I saw Nocturnal Animals and I’m not sure he’s should judge.

Jesse Plemons says that people called him “Meth Damon” after he starred on Breaking Bad, and that’s both cruel and perfect.

-I started watching the new HBO show from Mindy Kaling called Sex Lives of College Girls and it’s great. There’s one actress in particular who’s blowing everyone else away so I looked her up — and it turns out she’s Timothée Chalamet’s sister.

Madonna somehow linked Instagram censoring her nipple to the genocide of indigenous people. As you do.

Bad Bunny turned 27 this year and is all about introspection in his new Vulture profile.

Catherine O’Hara also received a Governor General’s Award, and her Schitt’s Creek costar Noah Reid serenaded her — while paying tribute to her character’s wigs.

Nina Dobrev and Abigail Cowen star in the trailer for Redeeming Love.

Taylor Swift Is Dropping Clues

Taylor Swift posted a black-and-white picture captioned, “not a lot going on at the moment.” She wore the same message on a t-shirt in her “22” music video and, in April, she used the caption while secretly recording folklore. While some assume it’s an “Exile” music video, the likeliest bet is that she’s re-recording Red, now that she’s officially free to. In her AMA speech, she confirmed that she’s re-recording her old music in the studio she originally did it.

-Euphoria star Lukas Gage posted a Zoom audition in which the director, thinking he was muted, mocked the size of his apartment. I’ve never seen so many blue-checked replies in a comments section, and they come from a weird, wide range of celebs like Dakota Fanning, Paul Mescal, January Joans, Molly Shannon, Emmy Rossum, Robbie Amell, Paul Scheer.

-TMZ reports the director on the call was Tristram Shapeeroand says he’ll be releasing his side of the story — but it won’t include an apology. Not quite sure how that comment could have possibly be taken out of context but sure.

Vanessa Hudgens was spotted looking cozy with MLB player Cole Tucker.

-When Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas were in New Orleans last week, everyone zeroed in on the massive diamond ring she was wearing, but it seems they were simply doing reshoots for Dark Water, in which they play a married couple. The way she’s looking at the ring though, they were def playing it up for the paps.

-This is a great interview with Kristen Stewart, in which she’s asked if only queer actors should play queer characters. “would never want to tell a story that really should be told by somebody who’s lived that experience. Having said that, it’s a slippery slope conversation because that means I could never play another straight character if I’m going to hold everyone to the letter of this particular law. I think it’s such a gray area. There are ways for men to tell women’s stories, or ways for women to tell men’s stories. But we need to have our finger on the pulse and actually have to care. You kind of know where you’re allowed. I mean, if you’re telling a story about a community and they’re not welcoming to you, then fuck off.”

-Jeopardy is not naming a new long-term host after Alex Trebek‘s death right away. For awhile, there will be a series of rotating hosts, starting with Ken Jennings.

Christine Baranski says she “practically didn’t have to read the script” before joining Dolly Parton’s new Christmas film: “Oh my God, I get to hang out with Dolly Parton!? She’s going to be my personal Christmas angel? Where do I sign the papers?” It just hit Netflix and I cannot wait to watch it.

-Now here’s a headline to kick off the week: “Sex Pistols star Johnny Rotten bitten by a flea on his penis after rescuing squirrels”

Hasan Minhaj was trending today for a clip from Vanity Fair’s lie detector test where he said he was more attractive than Dax Shepard.

-Speaking of Hasan, women of colour who worked on his Netflix show Patriot Act have called out his treatment of them.

-Netflix today announced that, according to their numbers, a record-setting 62 million households chose to watch The Queen’s Gambit in its first month, making it its biggest scripted limited series to date. I don’t believe Netflix’s ratings press releases at all, but it must mean something that it’s been listed in the Top 10 in Canada for weeks. The fact that it hit No. 1 for at least a day in 63 different countries speaks to it’s wide appeal — everyone from teens to grandmas seems to be watching it.

-Meanwhile, expect it to land on many Best TV of 2019 lists.

Prince William and Kate revealed their ‘dear dog’ Lupo died over the weekend.

-I remember when Ryan Reynolds filmed Just Friends in Saskatchewan and there were so many stories coming out of that town about him being um, not great. But his reputation on set has definitely turned around the last couple of years. And now he’s doing stuff like this: he recorded over 400 personalized videos to thank his quarantining crew.

Kelly Clarkson and Jewel teamed up for a “Foolish Games” duet over Zoom to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Piece of You album and it was pretty damn great.
