Oscars 2023 Red Carpet Recap

I don’t know who decided that the red carpet should be replaced by a “champagne” one, but it did nothing to showcase the fashions — especially considering how popular pale dresses were this year, which looked so washed out from the surroundings. It led to things feeling a bit stale and boring, which made me even sadder that I was missing The Last of Us’s finale for this (at least Pedro showed up).

Still, there were some stunning looks despite the setting. Here were my notables:

Angela Bassett in Jeremy Scott:
Angela Bassett did the thing! The carpet was desperate for colour before she showed up and she delivered. The silhouette is lovely and she made me root for a mermaid-tail dress, which are not usually my jam.

Michelle Yeoh in Dior Couture:
This is hand-sewn feathered is very, very pretty and I love the texture, but I’m surprised at how demure this is compared to some of the other bold looks she’s worn this awards season.

Cara Delevingne in Elie Saab Couture:
I think this might be my favourite of the night? Stunning colour, excellent shape and paired with killer makeup. She’s making her comeback following a rough year and this is such a great re-introduction.

Florence Pugh in Valentino Couture:
My first impression was this looked too much like she wrapped herself in a rumpled duvet, but Nicole talked me into this one. She doesn’t let it overwhelm her, and the shorts with pockets are cool. The Tiffany necklace is excellent, too.

Danai Gurira in Jason Wu:
This was so polished and stunning. On the red carpet, she said her hair paid tribute to African women.

Sandra Oh in Giambattista Valli:
It’s not my favourite dress of the night, but she was an early, much-needed pop of colour and it’s an appropriately not-too-formal dress for someone who isn’t an individual nominee (she’s there representing Turning Red). The pendant is gorg.

Nicole Kidman in Armani Prive:
Elizabeth Olsen was going to get my vote for my fave liquid black dress until Nicole showed up in this. This is such a killer look, and the not-too-fussy hair is perfect for a presenter. Flawless.

Mindy Kaling in Vera Wang:
I get that she wants to show off her new abs but I’m torn on this one. Is that mesh on her torso? I do, however, dig the sleeves and she gets some points for wearing a white Vera Wang and not looking bridal.

Paul Mescal in Gucci:
My boy Paul can’t really do wrong in my eyes, but I really dig this 70s-style suit. It’s hard to make menswear fun, and he pulls it off.

Harry Shum Jr. in Adeam:
Speaking of fun menswear, I adore this East-meets-West white and navy look on the Everything Everywhere All At Once actor.
