Johnny Depp Wins

-I’m really bummed about Johnny Depp’s win. I kept reading about how Amber Heard‘s case should be a slam dunk from a legal perspective, but the fact that the jury deliberated that long had me nervous. Again, the case wasn’t about whether she hit him too (she admitted she did!) or if they were both toxic (undoubtedly). It was about whether a woman can say “I was abused” — without even naming the man! — and be believed (even though the UK courts already established it happened). Not only was she not believed, but she wasn’t even allowed to say it. What are the chances that victims are going to want to come forward now?

-It should be noted that the jury also awarded Heard $2 million because they found she was defamed by Depp’s lawyer when he called her abuse allegations “a hoax.” So her allegations weren’t a hoax but he still won? Yeah, ok.

-In much, much happier news, Zendaya posted the cutest pic of her and Tom Holland for his bday.

-HBO Max has finally renewed Our Flag Means Death. I wonder if they waited until Pride to announce it?

-It’s kind of hilarious/sad that Variety’s Pride Month cover story celebrates Sara RamĂrez’s Che Diaz character on And Just Like That — one of the most reviled representations of an LGBTQIA characters in recent memory. In the story, showrunner Michael Patrick King says of season two, “I want to show more of Che rather than less of Che. Like, really.”

Aunjanue Ellis (aka the best thing about King Richard) wore a suit with the word “queer” emblazoned on her sleeve during the Essence Black Women Awards, and yet no one in the media asked her about her bisexuality. “How do you work that into the conversation, in the middle of me talking about this movie? I’m not that chick. My job was to talk about King Richard, the Williams family, these wonderful young women I worked with, Will Smith’s incredible work in that movie. I wasn’t going to be like, ‘And by the way, in case you ain’t heard yet
’ Because that’s artificial.”

-Glee star Matthew Morrison was reportedly fired from So You Think You Can Dance? after an internal investigation by Fox found messages he sent to a contestant had “crossed the line.” According to People, “She felt uncomfortable with his line of comments and went to producers, who then got Fox involved.”

-On a new podcast, Liam Payne opened up about old beef with his former One Direction bandmates, and claims he and Louis Tomlinson ‘hated’ each other, and he had ‘dislike’ for Zayn Malik. He added that Louis is his ‘best mate now’, but claimed: “But in the band we hated each other…Like, to come to blows hate each other, it was close.”

-The Wire premiered 20 years ago. Creators David Simon and Ed Burns talked to the NYT about why it has only become more relevant — and why it would never be made today.

-Netflix will stop green-lighting “expensive vanity projects.” Which sounds smart until you read the article and realize they want to focus on “bigger, better” event movies like The Adam Project and Don’t Look Up, while they’ve cut the independent feature division, which was dedicated to movies under $30M. So streaming basically killed smaller movies from appearing at the box office, and now they’re cutting them from streaming. I’m so tired.

-The trailer for season two of Rutherford Falls has dropped.

Bo Burnham released an hour of outtakes from his Inside special on Youtube.  The Joe Rogan bit is priceless.

A recently divorced gay man reunites with the daughter he gave up for adoption, and brings her to the lakehouse where he summered as a boy in the trailer for Amazon’s The Lake.

Kevin Hart and Woody Harrelson star in The Man from Toronto.
