Angelina Jolie Breaks Her Silence in Vanity Fair

angelina-jolie-vanity-fair

-Holy moly, this Vanity Fair cover story with Angelina Jolie is a lot to digest. There’s the intimate look at how she interacts with her kids. There’s the subtle hint that Brad Pitt “persuaded” her to have biological children. There’s her cryptic comment that the kids don’t need to heal from the divorce as much as “from the events that led to the filing,” planting some very specific seeds about Pitt’s behaviour in our imaginations. On the flip side, there are also some rare missteps in this interview. She gets defensive when the interviewer suggests Pitt craved a more stable, settled lifestyle. Her description of how they cast the lead child in her new film (by going to orphanages and slums, showing kids money and then snatching it away to see how they’d react) is beyond cruel. I can’t imagine how she thought that particular anecdote would come across, but she prob wasn’t aiming for ‘despicable.’ Still, if we’re comparing this with Pitt’s pseudo-philosophical GQ interview, she still wins.

Lupita Nyong’o managed to hang out at Comic Con without attracting attention by dressing up as the pink ranger. It’s been a rough news  day; trust me when I tell you that this video will cheer you up.

Kim Kardashian’s surrogate is reportedly 3 months pregnant.

Kate Hudson is still getting cast in movies? I kind of forgot she was an actress.

Amy Schumer is happy that Anne Hathaway may be taking over her role in the life-action Barbie movie, saying “she’s perfect!” I can’t tell if that’s shade or not…

-JFC. The Mindy Project’s Ike Barinholtz is recovering after breaking his neck(!) during a stunt on a movie set.

-The Toast returned for one day and I really, really needed it!

-The TCAs are this week, and HBO used the opportunity to do some Confederate damage control.

Cameron Dallas, Riz Ahmed, Joe Jonas, Stormzy, Brendon Urie  and all your other internet boyfriends are in Charli XCX’s new video.

Jessica Biel and Matt Bomer joined Jimmy Fallon for a game of charades last night. Her arms are INSANE. I really need  to step up my gym game.

Jennifer Aniston supported/mocked Jason Bateman at his Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony.

-Here’s the trailer for the new season of Top of the Lake, starring Elisabeth Moss and Nicole Kidman.

Lea Michele and Ashley Tisdale did a duet of Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own” and it’s actually quite lovely.

Jon Hamm and Lois Smith play a couple who aren’t separated by death in the Marjorie Prime trailer, which plays a lot like that Black Mirror episode with Haley Atwell.

Jessica Chastain Talks Paparazzi and Pitt in Elle Canada

Jessica Chastain Elle Canada

Jessica Chastain covers the latest issue of Elle Canada, in which she talks about her comments at the Cannes press conference, kissing Brad Pitt, calling out the paparazzi on social media, and why it’s “important to show powerful women who are good at their jobs because young girls need those examples.”

-TMZ is reporting that Justin Bieber canceled his tour because he’s “rededicated his life to Christ.” That’s…nice?

-Also John Mayer, who seems to have no connection to Justin or this tour, still offered an opinion on it.

TJ Miller continues to implode before our eyes.  Where are his people!?

-Divorce rumors don’t phase Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello, who are calling out “fake news.”

-Speaking of marital statuses, Robert Pattinson says he and FKA Twigs are “kind of” engaged.

-The fact that Jennifer Lopez is leaning over at a weird angle and still has abs? And she turned 48 yesterday? Kill me.

Kristen Stewart and her girlfriend crashed a wedding in Winnipeg. I like that she had the restaurant owner ask if it was ok before she did it.

-The Buzzfeed photo booth at ComicCon, which recreated ’80s portraits, is my favourite. The iZombie cast killed it.

-Speaking of ComicCon, at Arrow’s panel a kid fighting cancer asked a question and Stephen Amell responded by hopping off the stage, giving her his arrow necklace, and telling her to bring it back to him next year. Sorry, I must have a tree in my eye…

-Also, Arrow was responsible for my other favourite ComicCon moment, when a journalist told that cast that Lost’s Michael Emerson would be joining the show. Amell’s face when he first hears the name looks like he’s trying to work out a complex math problem…

-Riverdale costars Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse are dating. I know barely anything about either of them, and yet somehow I still want better for her.

-This Usher herpes story is just not going away.

-The first wave of TIFF movies were announced today and there are some huge films coming, though I’m shocked Blade Runner 2049 wasn’t part of that list. Still, we got some goodies (and a look at how Oscar season is shaping up): Battle of the Sexes (Emma Stone, Steve Carrel),  Alexander Payne’s Downsizing (Matt Damon, Kristen Wiig), Angelina Jolie’s First They Killed My Father, I Tonya (Margot Robbie, Sebastian Stan), Darren Aronofsky’s Mother (Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem), The Mountain Between Us (Idris Elba, Kate Winslet), Stronger (Jake Gyllenhaal, Tatiana Maslaney), The Shape of Water (Michael Shannon, Octavia Spencer), Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, and Suburbicon, directed by George Clooney, written by the Coen brothers and starring Matt Damon and Julianne Moore.

-Ready for another Margaret Atwood adaptation? Here’s the trailer for Netflix’s Alias Grace, starring Sarah Gadon, Zachary Levi, and Anna Paquin. I didn’t love that book, but Sarah Polley is behind this so I have high hopes.

Brad Pitt Gets the Spotlight at Frank Ocean Concert

Brad Pitt made a surprise appearance at Frank Ocean’s concert and I have SO MANY QUESTIONS. (Was this a statement? Art? Did he even know he was on screen? Somebody tell me!!)

-I didn’t understand Ayra‘s “that’s not you” line to her direwolf on GoT last night but now that I read the explanation I’m crying.

-Sorry, One Direction fans: Louis Tomlinson has shut down rumors of a romance with Harry Styles.

Lena Dunham referred to Jack Antonoff’s sibling as her “sister-in-law” on Instagram, and then had to deny speculation that she got married.

-I really, really liked this thread responding to Christopher Nolan‘s Netflix comments.

-I guess this is Kevin Hart’s response to those cheating allegations?

-Girls Trip (which I liked A LOT) had the biggest opening weekend for a live-action comedy this year despite its R rating, and already earned back what it cost to make. Add the fact that Wonder Woman and Beauty and the Beast are the year’s top-grossing films so far, and the box office is looking downright rosy for women-led flicks.

-The “friend from work” line in Thor: Ragnarok (aka – the best line in the entire trailer) was actually pitched by a Make-a-Wish kid who was visiting the set the day they shot that scene.

-In news that came out of ComicCon, Michelle Pfeiffer is joining the Ant Man sequel, Patty Jenkins has weirdly not signed on to Wonder Woman 2 yetHenry Cavill’s mustache is causing problems for Justice League, and Ben Affleck insists WB isn’t replacing him (“‘We want you to be the Batman’ they told me, and I believe them.”) Also, I would *love* to know which TV cast was yelling at each other before their TV Line interview.

-Speaking of TV casts behaving badly at the con, the Supergirl crew really stepped in it while doing a musical recap of their season, in which they mocked fans who ship Kara and Lena.  I still need to catch up on that show, but this seemed incredibly mean-spirited. Who cares if the writers will never have Supergirl hook up with a woman onscreen? Let people watch for whatever reason they like and/or hope for whatever outcome they want.  The fact that they were mocking a marginalized group that has really embraced that show made it even worse. The cast’s apologies were not great (gotta love the “I’m sorry but think about ME” tactic).  Jeremy Jordan‘s first note was especially victim-y, but at least he got it right on the second try.

-Everyone is talking about this adorable video of the little girl crying over the Justice League cast, but I like this video of Jason Momoa meeting the little kid who asked about Superman during the panel.

-So much trailer goodies dropped at ComicCon this weekend. On the TV side, we got trailers for the new seasons of Stranger ThingsThe Flash, Arrow, Supergirl, Doctor Who’s xmas special, Legends of Tomorrow, Westworld, Lucifer, Once Upon a Time, Preacher, and The Defenders.

-On the movie side, we got Justice League, Thor: Ragnaraok, Black Panther, and Spielberg‘s Ready Player One. (Also, this video of the Black Panther cast reacting to seeing the trailer for their first time is pretty swell.)
