This year’s Golden Globes’ red carpet was a sea of pale dresses and paler lips, but some stars managed to stand out. I rounded up all of the best and worst looks for MSN Canada (see the gallery here), but here’s a quick look at my faves — and my least faves.
BEST:

I might be in the minority here (and judging my the MSN Facebook commenters who couldn’t believe I gave her a thumbs-up, I am), but I LOVED Emma Watson‘s look. It was young and fresh and different — exactly what someone her age should be doing. It was also not super dressy, perfect for a presenter who doesn’t want to take the spotlight away from the nominees. Perfection.

Elisabeth Moss rightly won for her role in Top of the Lake, but she was already a winner the second she stepped out on the red carpet in this sleek J Mendel dress. And I usually don’t like shiny!

Reese Witherspoon wasn’t even a nominee, but she stole the spotlight on the carpet with this slimming, sexy Calvin Klein. I love that she was one of the few who dared to opt for colour. I wish Tatiana Maslany would have worn something like this. Her flapper-inspired dress was fine, but she’s a newcomer and this was her opportunity to make her mark.

Cate Blanchett‘s Armani dress is super edgy and super perfect for her. God bless her for never being a bore on the red carpet. I love it!

Olivia Wilde showed the other pregnant attendees how it’s done (we’re looking at you, Drew Barrymore and Kerry Washington) with this sleek and sexy green Gucci.
WORST:

Raise your hand if you’re over Zooey Deschanel like I am? It’s one thing to bow to the alter of quirk, but that doesn’t mean you have to choose such aggressively unflattering outfits. And those shoes are unforgivable.

Julia Roberts didn’t even attempt to pretend to care with this outfit. So very boring, it’s almost insulting.

It’s your moment, Sandra Bullock! Why are you handicapping yourself with such a hideous Prabal Gurung dress?

Speaking of not taking advantage of their moment in the sun, Jennifer Lawrence now has the perfect haircut to pair with a fun, edgy dress. This was not it.

Was there another dress more desperate and annoying than Paula Patton‘s overdone Stéphane Rolland Couture? She and Robin Thicke clearly deserve each other.
